Following Our Nearest and Dearest Rivals, 2014-15

Benitez simply wasn't the right appointment because of who he was and his history with Chelsea. I would have kept RDM on for longer - the atmosphere during Benitez's reign was toxic and it surely had an effect on the players.

The Chelsea side of 2012/13 admittedly wasn't as great as the talents of Hazard and Mata would have you believe, but we should have won more than Benitez managed. He utterly misused a club legend in JT and the losses to Corinthians, Swansea and QPR were utterly disgraceful. I have a hard time believing RDM would have done much worse.

The EL win was the only silver lining in what I thought was an extremely dispiriting season in general.

Yeah and I'm not saying Robbie should have been sacked because of our CL failure but I think that's why he ultimately was

Paradoxically. I think it was the way we won the CL that was Robbie's downfall.

I often wondered if Benitez was appointed as a wake up call to the squad who were not performing under Roman's previous managers.

"This is what you will get if you don't get the finger out!"

Of course that's not reality but it did cross my mind at the time given he must have known the hate the majority of fans had for the man.

Sampdoria president Massimo Ferro says Rafa Benitez would need to ‘see a dietitian’ before he would appoint him.

Ha!

To be fair it's not like he's a stranger to appointing arseholes as managers considering they are currently under the stewardship of one Mihajlovic.

Rivaldo-esque from Luis Fabiano

That is sickening behaviour and sums up everything that is bad in the modern game.

At least he got a red card but you have to feel for the defender.

How do you mean?

That season was toxic at the Bridge. Remember some people wanting us to lose games so that Rafa would get sacked, including the match at Leeds which just beggared belief.

My view was that it was sh*t that it happened but it wasn't going to change so we might as well get behind the team, yet some persisted with that sh*t chant which was totally their right but probably didn't help with results. Rafa made some bad tactical moves, but there were some good moments that season like the United game at home in the FA Cup or the Europa League Final, or the promotion of Ake to the first-team squad, or doing Leeds 5-1 at their place, beating United in the league at Old Trafford, seeing Lamps beat the record and in light of that you could say Rafa did an adequate job.

That's why I think some supporters thawed towards him. I always thought the offence taken at the flags comment was a bit funny and was reminded of it when the club put out flags before both the League Cup Final and PSG match.

I also could not ultimately stand that stupid chant. I understood people singing it early on, I even joined in to an extent when things were bad, but even in April people were still singing it! Why!? As if further managerial turmoil was going to help!

For me it got to a point where I neither supported nor abused him, I'd just accepted that sadly he was going to be there for the rest of the season and the best thing to do was to just get behind the 11 men on the pitch.

There were good moments but when you compare them to similar good moments we've had this season, for example, there's no comparison really.

Like you said though, adequate is a good word to use to describe the job that Benitez did overall.

What an asshole. Why would a footballer want to make a fool of himself like this ? The ref clearly isn't good enough for the job either, he has sent that player off because of Luis Fabiano's reaction.

Sky Sports are desperate for some pro-Liverpool news.

Look what the dug out of the stats.

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/9817599/liverpool-lead-manchester-united-arsenal-everton-and-tottenham-in-ultimate-league

They have never, ever won the Premier League. The most recent period of English football's history.

That tells you exactly how pointless this "Ultimate League" is.

whoa - that's amazing thanks for posting those links

although when I do a 50 year period with the Statto stats Manchester United come out on top
