Carlo Ancelotti - Chelsea's greatest ever manager?

Featured Replies

I was doing some shopping earlier and spotted an impish, Italian looking guy. This got me thinking, is Carlo Ancelotti our greatest ever manager? Not for winning the double, but for selling us Gianfranco Zola??!

he is a great manager, and I was appalled at the way the club treated him; however, Jose is our best manager, no doubt.  Robbie D with honourable mention

Let's be serious here. Carlo was great, still is great but Jose is in a different league than every other manager in the world right now.

By the time he retires he won't just be head and shoulders our greatest ever manager, he will be head and shoulders the greatest ever manager.

Losing any of Hazard, Costa, Fabregas etc etc would have less of a detrimental impact on our chances of glory than losing Jose.

Carlo is undoubtably a great manager, I'll always have more of a soft spot for Ranieri, the ‘tinker man’, but Carlo is probably the better manager. I would put Ted Drake, and Mourinho above Carlo though.

He's probably not Chelsea's greatest manager but I'd say he's one of the greatest managers, period.

What's has he won now? Three champions leagues, three, possibly four, league titles (how many did he win at PSG?), the FA cup, Copa Del Rey, that's what I can remember for now.

If he wins La Liga this season then Carlo has had a hell of a career. He's very much my favourite Chelsea manager in terms of the person but you can't look beyond Mourinho as the greatest.

you know what, i don't want to be dismissive of di matteo's achievement with us, but in all honesty i think the CL win was a player's win, not the manager's. Let's be honest, the players had experienced so many different managers over the years, yet we always made the latter stages of the CL; the win was inevitable sooner or later, with or without a top manager.

However, i agree that Carlo is a great manager and imo, he's on par with guardiola behind mourinho as the 3 best active managers in the world.

Little changes like moving Rammy to RW and giving Bertrand a good run, as well as his evidently fantastic man management and motivational skills show his managerial expertise.

I believe if we didn't have RDM we still wouldn't have won a champions league trophy.

Nope.

He was good but he wasn't a patch on Jose

Carlo was a terrific manager for Chelsea and it's a pity he was only at the club for two years but I don't think he's the greatest Chelsea manager ever. That honour goes to Jose comfortably.

Carlo had a great first season winning the EPL and FA Cup but things began to decline as the team started ageing and required an extensive rebuild. Sadly he wasn't afforded the opportunity to rebuild our side but I couldn't be more appreciative of his efforts as manager. It was unfortunate that the likes of Roman and Gourlay treated him with utter disrespect at the end of his tenure with us.

He's a great man and very highly regarded by his players as well. It doesn't surprise that he's been successful wherever he goes.

I've always found Carlo a lot easier to like than Jose although I think Jose is probably the better manager. Both are at the very top of their profession though and any team should count themselves very fortunate to have either of those two in charge.

No probably about it.

I agree, Carlo is a lovely bloke - a real quality guy and a very good coach. But Mourinho is still streets ahead.

One thing is for sure though, Ancelotti was also streets ahead of Ranieri. I see Greece have sacked the tinkerman after just 4 months in charge after a disasterous run including a defeat to the mighty Faroe Islands!!

Ranieri too was a nice guy but unfortunately nice guys don't tend to be wiinners and I think that's him done with football management now.

Jose > Carlo > Hiddink > RDM > Vialli > Ranieri > Gullit > AVB > Scolari > Grant > A steaming pile of horse manure > The Fat One

On another subject... f**k me I forgot Scolari was our manager for a while there... I can't actually remember anything about when he was in charge, other than we were not playing very well. Not the most memorable guy is he..

for the first 2 and a half months under scolari we were playing some of the best football ive ever seen from any club

don't want to remember what happened after

Grant was better than Scolari and AVB for us, surely!

The same players who were failing miserably up to that point and were on the verge of going out of the CL after being tonked in Napoli. Robbie must have been doing something that AVB wasn't.

Carlo was a good manager and a very likeable bloke, but Jose is #1 for me.

I think cole came out and said that the players couldn't get motivated with avb as manager. Don't get me wrong, di matteo obviously gave them confidence in themselves, but also it was probably a case of the players wanting to impress and fight for the new manager. I just feel that rdm got a hell of a lot more credit for that CL trophy than he should have when you look at our performances in the tournament over the previous years. It isn't like we struggled for many years before rdm took over the team; the avb era was obviously a rare blip.

I feel exactly the same about our europa cup win too; it wasn't benitez who won that for us in my opinion. I also feel the main reason for our great performances in the CL for all those years post Mourinho, is because of the fighting spirit, grit and determination that Jose himself instilled in the lads since his time at the club.
