Douglas Costa Chelsea Target

Willian has been superb for us

I'm not a Willian hater but I wouldn't go as far as 'superb'. Hazard has been superb, Willian has been 'reliable'.

Nevertheless, part of me thinks that we should have gone all out on a quality player than pay a bit less as a gamble.

Fully agree. Bale and hazard wins you the champions league or at least get you past psg.

We don't have enough routes to goal right now. No one scores from free kicks I like William and Oscar scored what was it 8 goals in the league but after that its thin from the midfield. Too reliant on costa and hazard.

I disagree we've won loads of games thanks to his workrate.

Willian is much better than Costa so this doesn't make any sense really, usually you go for player who improves your side.

I fear IF this goes through it's along the lines of Salah and Cuadrado.

Dependable. Solid. Not superb though. Think that's the best we can hope from someone like Costa when what I think we all want is a consistent matchwinner.

Just think of all the space someone on that right-wing would actually get because of the attention Hazard draws, yet we've got a guy who scored 2 league goals all season and the best thing you can say about him is 'workrate'.

The only positive is that he stepped his game up later in the season and seemed on the cusp of being a player who could open teams up consistently.

What he and Costa do have is pace on the ball. Him, Costa and Hazard running at defenders on the counter could be fruitful for us and plays to the strengths of Costa, Falcao and Remy.

He's Brazilian. That's it. We wouldn't even be looking at him otherwise. We've wasted way too much money on wingers who just don't cut it: Salah, Cuadrado, Marin, Moses. It's time to stop messing about. We should've bought top talent like Sanchez or Griezmann when they were available. We need game changers not Youtube wingers who flatter to deceive.

The players we seem to be getting linked with are mainly squad players. It could just be a case of Mourinho believing in the current starting 11 to reach a higher level than last season.

I think the majority of us would be underwelmed if we ended up with douglas costa and falcao. This isn't a great window for available players, there doesn't seem like too many available.

Greizmann, pogba, koke, and bale are all looking increasing likely to be unattainable, who else is available that could definitely improve our first 11?

I'm getting the feeling it's going to be a disappointing window with no real exciting signings.

I would love for us to bring in a real star player like we did last season with costa and fabregas, but I'd settle for a lacazette or a firmino.

We need to improve on last season on the European front.

I can't see Costa doing that at all, he's an average footballer who is quick. It's Salah all over the back.

As someone else pointed out if this goes through then that's nearly £100 million spent on a position we still don't have any assists or goals coming from. That's very worrying if you ask me.

To be fair it was not a unified happy place her last summer either.

Many were concerned about Diego for his injuries and his temperament. A few for if he could produce in our league.

Cesc had become a barca back up player and was an ex gunner captain. There would have been a few on here happy to see them not come and for us to sign balotelli instead lol.

Turned out pretty good in the end.

Not saying Falcao and this Costa will turn out the same, but the shed end being happy/unhappy about signing players is not a clear indication of a good summer of deals or not.

Are they technically good players? The problem I have with some of our guys is thr hoof and rush mentality. I want to see us play ourselves out of tight spots, not just wollop the ball up the field. If we bring in a guy who is technically sound, then it wouldn't be a problem, but the last thing we want is someone who is going to sh*t himself in possession and pass back or lose the ball instead of being a forward thinker. I haven't watched this Douglas costa at all so not sure if he is consistent or not, but we seem to just be grasping at names (or the media is!) now and not putting any real thought into bringing top quality in.

Douglas Costa just isn't anything great at all so this interest we seem to have in him is weird. Even as a squad player it's questionable, we could get better squad players for a lot less. There is a reason why no big clubs have gone in for him and he has been playing for Shakhtar for the last 5 years, it's because he's not very good.

Yip.

It's another strange one.

I don't see the need for filling up our squad with average footballers especially in a time where foreign places in a squad are getting lower.

If Jose wants to improve on our current concluded season, he has to buy the players who will improve our first XI and the Douglas Costa is nowhere near that player who would improve our first XI significantly. Griezmann or some other quality player is the way to go if we wanna win the CL.

I disagree, our first 11 is close to being good enough to win any competition, what we desperately need is squad depth that mourinho is comfortable playing.

Have to agree. Pretty obvious to anyone who watched the PSG match that we lacked ideas going forward against the better teams in Europe. Would love another attacking option on that right wing so we can really take it to teams.

I kinda of agree with this. I think this 11 is capable of winning the champions league, and there are quite a few you would expect to improve next season. I agree that a problem we had this season was Mourinho didn't have enough faith to use more of the squad, and maybe the signing of some quality squad players would help elevate the first 11 the new heights.

Maybe not the most exciting summer ahead, but there just aren't that many top drawer players available to come and improve the first 11.

Right wing is where we have Willian, cuadrado, Ramires and even remy who can play. It's one of the positions where there is a lot of squad depth but no automatic starter/match winner

Not sure if serious. there is no way we're gonna ever win CL with Matic-Fabregas pivot and Oscar playing 10. We look toothless going forward if Hazards not on song.

Not sure if you seriously think that Oscar would start a CL final when hes been dropped for just about every big game this season. Clearly Ramires or possibly Zouma would come in.

And a team of Courtois - Iva - JT - Cahill - Dave - Matic - Fabregas - Ramires - Hazard - Willian - Costa, coached by Jose Mourinho, is clearly capable of beating any team in the world.

We could win the Champions League but it would be in the same manner as Inter under Jose or us in 2012.

I think Jose can win the majority of matches by stopping the other team and trying to beat them on the counter, but I think maybe we could aspire to being the best team in the world. Hoping you make less mistakes than the other team is what Jose tried againsst PSG and we lost that tie. Sometimes I think rather than hoping the other team loses the match, you have to go out there and beat them. The best teams in the world are the ones that take that initiative in my opinion (I know others will disagree and that all that matters is who wins the tie but there's a difference between being the best team in the world and being the CL winners - I don't think we were the best team in Europe in 2012 for instance and Greece weren't in 2004).

Douglas Costa is probably more of the same whereas I think some would like to see us try to win matches more proactively.

Jose's approach has also worked against every single large domestic rival we've faced in the league since his return, resulting in him not having lost a single game.

To say that approach was responsible for our loss against PSG is plainly wrong, twice we were within 5 minutes of winning and poor defending from corners lost us the game. The tactics were clearly successful and Jose cannot be held accountable for poor marking from set pieces, and if he is to be held accountable for it - it is clearly an unrelated matter to his overall match tactics.
