Raheem Sterling to Chelsea

Featured Replies

Slightly surprised at how people react to him. We talk about burning out youngsters yet when a player is given a rest, he's deemed 'lazy'.

We talk about players' avarice yet when a player turns down a massive contract and actually talks about ambition, he's branded 'greedy'.

Not sure how much that has to do with the player's actions or the way he looks, but in terms of footballing ability I reckon he's got to be worthy of consideration. He offers a directness that we don't really have beyond Hazard (Cuadrado still needs to show that) and he has a lot of potential. I'm not a massive fan of buying youngsters for lots of money when we have an Academy we should utilise and the issue for me is that he could block the path of Jeremie Boga who is a similar player (although used more centrally).

But writing him off for spurious reasons? Nah.

It wasn't a simple case of needing a rest though he was out clubbing til all hours after he asked for a rest from England duty. Guys a prima Donna already would never want him in a Chelsea shirt.

The contract issue is certainly about money otherwise why even mention that you turned down an offer of 100k already?

Didn't he claim he needed a rest so Hodgson left him on the bench, then used him. Then he came back the next day and went out with a couple of other England players? Not really an issue for me.

As for the contract issue, if he's ambitious why would he stay at Liverpool?

No he didn't play and ended up out clubbing.

I'm not sure it is ambition, it sounds like a money issue. Probably said the ambition thing to cover his arse, he dropped the ball when he mentioned the 100K offer.

Fair enough. I just think if he's got no ties to Liverpool then it would make sense for him to leave. We all slate Gerrard for not doing the same in 2005 so why wouldn't Sterling?

Whether he's worth the figures being thrown around I don't know.

He should obviously sign any contract that is given to him, and at the moment the club chooses to give it. If not, he's a greedy c**t. I mean, it's not like the player should have any choice in his career path. What an absurd thought!

I love how on RAWK last year they were all creaming themselves over him, now because he's rejected a contract they are all saying he's sh*t anyway and they can do better.

Every year I see stories of players who might buy out the remainder of their contracts and I don't think I have ever once seen it actually happen.

AVB :)

I think ronaldo bought his contract out at Barca so he could move to inter. Doesn't happen often though, but a cut price sterling would be great.

When was that, 15 years ago? More?

That's my point, I don't think buying out your contract is as easy as these stories make out.

I think you're right. Apparently players aged over 25 can buy themselves out of the remainder of their contract if they have been at the club for more than three years, based on the 'Webster ruling' of 2006, through which Hearts centre-back Andy Webster managed to engineer a move to Wigan.

However, the only cases I can find where this ruling was successfully used are Jonas Gutierrez's transfer to Newcastle from Mallorca, a Senegalese goalkeeper called Tony Sylva moving from Lille to Trabzonspor, and a Brazilian midfielder called Matuzalém moving from Shakhtar to Zaragoza, but all of these moves ultimately ended up with the new club having to pay a transfer fee or compensation. It doesn't really seem like a serious option.

It's possible that Sterling could actually buy out his final year meaning that we have an easier time getting him in. He only has a year left correct? It could happen.

Sterling would be a heck of a signing in a position we need some reinforcement in. Have to admit the lad is quality but he needs some proper direction.

Our last signing from the Scousers didn't go so well and they will absolutely crucify Sterling in the press if he came to us.

He has two years remaining on his contract. Sterling would be a brilliant signing but I can't see Liverpool selling this summer. They might as well write off any chance of getting back in the champions league if they do that.

Exactly why I wouldn't want him, mentally he is fragile. Things like asking for breaks and the contract talk etc. the lad needs to sort himself out or he will end up one of those could have been a.

Last 3-4 performances have been shockingly bad. Perhaps all the talk about contracts and transfer has got to him.

City will still bid for him I think. They need some English players -- already some rumours of them trying to sign Wilshere.

How many premier league matches did that cause him to miss?

I fully agree with this. Mentally he needs to grow a lot, but also in terms of actually playing. He is nowhere near the finished product in my opinion.

I don't want to sound like one of those guys that always goes on about youth. And I don't actually believe we can easily promote multiple youth players into the starting 11 while still winning thophies. Sterling, for me wouldn't be a priority at all. I'd much rather give Boga a chance.

Where exactly would Sterling fit in straight away? I don't see us dropping Oscar or Willian that easily, and we also still have Cuadrado who still deserves a chance. Sterling would probably ask for a fortune to feed all his 36 children as well.

Boga looks like a real talent, he reminds me of Hazard in a way. In the youth  FA cup final he still went for it 100% even when the match was well and truly won.

I'd rather give him a chance than Sterling in all honesty.
