Player of the season so far

Featured Replies

We are currently in February, with 14 matches to go until the end of the season, I am keen to hear who people think has been our player of the season so far. My pick would be Diego Costa, it's a close call, I could have gone with Fabregas or Matic, maybe Hazard as well, but for me Costa has shown us exactly what we've been missing since Drogba left in 2012. I believe that if we had Costa last season, we would have won the league, of coarse Fabregas and Matic have also made huge differences to the team, Fabregas has been that play maker who we were missing, but after Drogba left us, we were really crying out for a top striker and Costa has come in and proven that he is exactly that. Costa is my player of the season so far for his passion and determination, which has at times lifted the team, and also for his ability to do what Torres obviously didn't do enough, score goals.

1.) Fabregas

2.) Matic

3.) Hazard

Costa would be 4th on my list.

Fabregas has been the key difference between this season and last (plus Matic not being here for the first half of last season), with the pair of them we move the ball so much better and can actually unlock deep/packed defences.

Eden Hazard easily for me. Maybe we take him a bit more for granted compared to the others considering he's been here and doing it for almost 3 seasons now. Matic, Fabregas and Costa have been huge upgrades to the team but Hazard remains our best player imo. The kind of defensive attention he gets makes things easier for the others, yet he still manages to directly influence games as much as anyone else. And he has stepped up in the big games. He's taking more responsibility and the defensive side of his game has also become excellent, after a lot of working with Jose obviously.

Have to mention Fabregas and Costa though. Really shows how good they have been in their first season, and also how much of a difference they have made to the team that people are putting them above Hazard. Similar goes for Matic too who has been a monster even though he hasn't quite kept the same level through the season.

And finally JT and Branna, who I'm sure have no hope of winning it, but have been just as important as anyone else. Where would we be without JT in particular, I don't even want to think.

Agree with Jonty that Fabregas has made the most difference from last season. He had been more consistent than Costa. Hazard had also been huge. I think it is close to a Fab/Hazard joint award.

For mine Matic has had more poor games than that group so he sits below them.

First would comfortably be Eden Hazard for mine. His first two seasons were very good but this season he has just been brilliant. A good game for just about any other Chelsea player just seems routine for Hazard, so brilliant has he become. Even if he's not getting goals or assists, he's roasting full-backs with unremitting regularity, invariably getting them carded and either making them more reluctant to challenge or leading the opposition manager to waste a substitution on that area, meaning that they can't change things up in other potentially more vital areas.

Although it is a very tough call, second is Nemanja Matic for mine. While we have proven in the past that we can survive without Diego Costa, weapon though he undoubtedly is, Matic is the one man who can dominate the midfield and distract the opposition's attentions from Cesc Fabregas, leaving him free to pull the strings. He is a textbook defensive midfielder, replete with excellent positioning and powers of anticipation to disrupt opposition plays in the midfield and an excellent engine. Not only that, but he's a pretty handy passer himself. No coincidence that we look far less solid in the midfield without him.

Third is Cesc Fabregas, the loader of bullets for Diego Costa and co to finish. He's such a metronomic passer and a gifted playmaker; his absence in midfield has been so sorely missed for these past few matches because our play is so much more disjointed, turgid and predictable without his magic touch.

Diego Costa, John Terry, Thibaut Courtois, Oscar, Branislav Ivanovic, Cesar Azpilicueta and even Willian have performed with distinction and each could have made the Top 3 in other seasons.

Petr Cech, Kurt Zouma and even Filipe Luis have been impressive when they've actually played. Zouma in particular is a lock for any Chelsea Young Player of the Year award and looks to have a big future at this club.

Our best three in no particular order have been Costa, Hazard and Fabregas.

Though our two most important players are Terry and Matic. I would feel very uncomfortable going into a big game without either of those two; contrast to the first three. They would be big misses in a big game, but I know we can survive without them.

Fabregas makes assists, Diego scores goals, but without Matic and Hazard that wouldn't be possible. Hazard is the best player in this league and top 3 in the world, according to me, but he stills not so effective. Must improve his stats - goals, assists, key touches. So

1) Matic

2) Hazard

3) Diego

4) Fabregas

5) Ivanovic

6) Azpilicueta

Slightly puzzled by these votes for Ivan......

He is the best attacking defender in the league and lately very stable in our half. I find votes  normal.

Our best player has to Hazard.

Hazard

Costa

Matic

Terry

Fabregas

Ivan/Azpi/Oscar/Willian have been excellent too but a fraction below the rest.

Zouma may be up there at the end of the season.
