In your opinion, why are we the most hated club in England?

Featured Replies

I wonder how long the hypocrisy will last considering Man U and Liverpool are looking to spend 100m+ each season now.

Mind you I'd be amazed if Liverpool give Bingo Brendan another 100m to ruin.

Roman's money has helped us no end, that's obviously an understatement. What a lot of our 'haters' seem to forget is that we were already a well established team who regularly qualified for the Champions League & did reasonably well in it. We also came close to winning the EPL on more than one occasion. I don't see a comparison with City. They were nowhere before the money came in.

We qualified for the CL under Vialli in 98 I think, and again under Ranieri in 2002/2003. I wouldn't call twice regularly. Generally we finished around 6th-ish, qualifying for the UEFA cup in the years prior to that (and usually getting knocked out early by sh*t teams from Israel or Norway). And the only proper league challenge we had that I remember in those times was under Vialli again when we came close, possibly in 99, other than that we were never challenging the top.

We've won more trophies from 1993 to 2003 (pre-roman) than Arsenal have from 2005 - 2015. Two of those trophies, European. How many European trophies do Arsenal have?

Because we were the first club to get an outside investment that transformed our club overnight into title challengers.

I'd be jealous and envious if it had been Spurs or West Ham that Roman invested in rather than us.

When something upsets the normal equilibrium people tend to be rather judgmental and so anything "bad" that happens at our club is magnified due to the jealously of our overnight transformation into big hitters and big spenders.

Basically we got very lucky and while we appreciate it no end and continue to love our club, those on the outside with their noses pressed against the shop window looking on with envy just hate us because they ain't us.

Going beyond jealousy, we're an easy team to dislike if you really want to. We're in a 'posh' area of London so you've got the whole 'class war' thing, we're owned by a foreigner who amassed his wealth in a 'questionable' manner (although you could level that charge at many a wealthy person), we've got an arrogant manager who is a terrible loser, we've had a cosmopolitan/non-English feel for a long time going so far as to be the first team to field a wholly foreign starting XI, our figurehead for the past decade and a bit has had some regrettable moments and to compound it all we're successful.

Blackburn had a similar level of relative investment in the mid-90s but that came from 'local lad done good' Jack Walker so they weren't vilified, although their success was very much a flash-in-the-pan.

But I still think most opposition supporters would take being hated if they could have the success we've had too. After a while you get used to it, then you thrive on it but you also have to deal with the mocking when you do invariably fail.

I think it was partially to do with our style of play from about 2004 onwards (till a couple of years ago). It was a very pragmatic game plan as opposed to say, Arsenal's more free-flowing style. I absolutely relished the fact that we had our own identity in a sense, and the more people hated us the better it frankly felt to win all those titles.

That team was great though. You had Robben and Duff tearing teams apart, you had Frank rocketing them in from 30 yards...

Same with the current team - how can you have the most exciting young player in the world on the pitch and be bored? 25,000 w**ky Arsenal fans are wrong.

Off topic but every Arsenal fan I have met has been a complete c**t, Man United have been glory hunters or seeking popularity in every walk of life, and Liverpool, twisted and more chips on their shoulder than Ronald Mc f**king Donald.

Don't sugar coat it stevo say why you really feel

I do know that I get very quick responses online, by United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham fans, as soon as I post something Chelsea related, that's it, I have people out to get me haha. It's just banter most of the time, or a general disagreement, though today a Spurs fan said that I'd posted the most ironic status of the year, it was regarding Barca and how it irritates me when Brits wear Barca shirts, maybe he's one of those people, so I can see how he might be offended, anyway I don't see how it's that ironic, I literally see a ton of people wearing Barca shirts, who probably don't even watch Barca games.

Wouldn't it only be ironic if you wore replica shirts of foreign teams yourself?

Exactly, I think he probably has a Barca shirt, so he took offence haha, I don't really care. He knows I'm a Chelsea fan, so it was just an excuse for him to post something anti Chelsea and try and offend me, quite pathetic really, from someone I hadn't even seen for about five years, jealous Spuds fan.

I don't  think we are ?

Rottenham are the most hated team in the UK from my experience and talking to rival fans , no-one has a good word to say about the club or the fans.

QPR are about the only team in London that hate us more than Rottenham .................

Liverpool and Arsenal are the worst for hating us.

Liverpool hate us because they can't get over us beating them and securing the final champions league spot back in 2003. It was only a little while after this that Roman took over the club. They probably think their defeat is the reason why we are where we are now. Instead of blaming their own team, they take their frustrations out on us. Us beating them in the league cup final, F.A cup final, messing up their chances to win the league title and Jose Mourinho cheering in front of them just makes their hate for us stronger. Basically, they hate us because of their own failures.

Arsenal's hate aimed towards us is all jealousy. They don't like that out of all of the London clubs, Roman picked us. They don't like that we are now the best London club, they don't like that we stopped them from possibly dominating English football for a few years, they don't like that we beat them in the Champions League in their unbeaten Premier League season. They hate that we won the Champions League before them, they hate it when Mourinho get's one over Wenger. It's all jealousy. They even go so far as calling themselves the pride of London just to make themselves feel better, they are just desperate. To be honest, they embarrass themselves.

The rest hate us because they bought into that crap that we apparently ruined football. They are also jealous because they know it could have been them that Roman spent his money on instead of us. Even City fans used to be like this, now they have shut up because they have the same financial advantages as us. They would all love it if some billionaire came in and made their club better financially.

And, apart from the Champions League "goal that never was" defeat, we've continued to spoil their party.

I was talking about the CL with a Liverpool fan at work (this is a while ago now) and I said I don't like when English teams play each other in Europe as it doesn't feel like a CL game then. He said "why because we always knock you out of Europe haha". I just said back "you know we've knocked you out the same amount of times you've knocked us out don't you?" And he didn't know what to say haha

Imagine that!! Liverpool blaming someone else instead of themselves. Never knew they could do that............. :laugh2:

They're the two most smug, arrogant, self-entitled sets of fans in England. And we've usurped them. And they don't like it one bit.

Generally just jealousy, and they use the Abramovich situation as their fuel for the argument. The way I view it is that the team that dominates generally is hated by the most people. People absolutely loathed everything about united under Ferguson when they won everything, now it's only really the proper rivals who absolutely despise Unifed because they've had a relatively poor two years.

Also people like to bring in the class argument which is utterly ridiculous to me. In modern football people seem to define class as the ordinary and the boring, hence why people like Pellegrini are hailed as classy men and Mourinho who says things that people will remember is viewed as a vile and horrible man

Also have to add that the style of football we play compared to others also draws us a lot of criticism. The influence of foreign countries enjoying the English game is absolutely fantastic, but with social media sites like Soccer Memes who are run by Africans who have started enjoying football with Guardiola football becoming prominent, it's inevitable that teams like Arsenal having 11 men in the opposition box in a champions league game will generate more praise than cautious yet effective football
