Utd get otamendi and I reckon it will be between us and them for title

They still need a striker though, only really got Rooney.

LVG is clearly balancing the team the way Netherlands was setup in the World Cup. They are buying strong players to cover the D-line and with Schweini they get a controlling player towards attack as well. Schweinsteiger is a great player. Will take time for him to adjust to PL but he will be their Ballack for sure.

Scheiderlin is a bit luxury-buy for me at this point. He'd like to play all the time.

Not sure what Mata is doing on the right wing. He's got no real pace for that. You've got two lightweights on the right with Mata and Herrera. Not a balanced solution for me.

I think LVG is going to keep the crossing culture at MU so maybe Valencia will play there and Mata stays at bitpart or switches with Herrera?

D-line is the problem but now there is a great cover for it which clearly helps it a lot.

Mata was played there when he was getting regular starts, but obviously not as a winger. Him and Herrera work well together and if this Darmian fella is as good as they are making out, then that right side is sorted.

The interesting thing about that line up is it leaves out their three best performers from last season in De Gea, Young and Fellaini, and also from what we were told, their most important player in Carrick. Will LVG struggle to figure out his best XI again?

That midfield does looks brilliant. Arguably the best in the league if they can keep Schweinsteiger fit. They still need a commanding centreback and I'm not sure Otamendi is that player but there is no doubt that United will be contenders.

Still think United need a real leader at the back and obviously a striker. They seem to be overloaded in midfield now though, Fellaini is looking pretty expendable to me. I can only really see him staying there as a target man used off the bench in desperate situations.

I also look at Mata and I don't see a natural fit for him in the United set up. He can do a job on the right, certainly, and is still valuable at set pieces despite his lack of athleticism. Ultimately though, I reckon LVG will settle with Depay/Young on the left and ADM on the right. This seems to have the most balance, IMO.

true, and a top GK because de gea single handily kept utd in the race for 3rd place, but that doesn't take away the fact that they will still be up there challenging with the buys so far. Plenty of time left for them to strengthen the areas needed too, and they haven't got to worry about money because i'm sure they'll get a good chunk for di maria, presuming he gets sold and use that on a top striker and maybe a central defender.

There's a beautiful irony about the fact that Mata might end up playing on the right wing after all.

surely depay will play in di maria's position, no? mata on the right, depay on the left, rooney at no10 and a top striker to lead the line. i can't see schweinsteiger being a first team regular tbh.

Point I was making was that despite spending £37m on Mata, United are close to being in the position we found ourselves where he is this luxury player that is hard to fit into the team unless you build the side around him.

Mata on the right wing is wasted, he can't dictate play properly from there and doesn't have the ability to track back and can become a defensively liability on the wing.

Best way to play him would probably be:

Schweinsteiger - Carrick

Di Maria - Mata - Depay

                Rooney

Don't know much about the Depay lad or whether he will be ready to go straight into the first team but point is Mata is going to be best through the middle, anywhere else he's a bit of a square peg in a round hole.

Schneiderlin ahead of Carrick any day for me. Carrick is a decent player but Schweingsteiger and Schneiderlin would work so much better for them.

United need a leader at the back though. As long as their defense is still bad these new signings won't matter all that much.

Probably why they are after Ramos.

If he is the player they think will solve their defensive problems then i'm not worried. The guy makes a lot of mistakes and is a hot head. I don't see him as someone who can lead personally.

He's captained Madrid and Spain. I think he's a perfectly fine leader, his ability doesn't change that. I can see him doing well in a league like this where you can get away with a bit more.

United now confirm Morgan Schneiderlin.

Holy sh*t. They're making ALL the right moves in this transfer window. United will mean serious business this season. That is a solid midfield they have now, probably rivals ours but we'll see.

They still need a world class striker though and theres none out there available.

Do they need a world class striker though? They have Rooney, and if they play 1 up top like we do, then they just need to bring in decent back up options.

True, but I don't wish to make a rooney discussion but I think his best days may be a thing of the past. Fantastic player when he's on it but he's been a regular player at the top level for nearly 15 years now. Your body can only take so much at the top level.
