City have overpaid, I think half that would be about right

I don't think you can judge whether or not city have overpaid yet. He's very young and could go on to be worth every penny.

The pressure is going to be on though, at that price, he is going to be under heavy scrutiny from the get go, and our lovely media will be all over him.

It will be nice to see a media circus not involving chelsea though.

It's amusing on two fronts...on one hand Liverpool have once again been unable to keep one of their best players, another reminder to them of their limited status in the game...but at the same time what mugs City are for paying at least double what sterling is worth...you can imagine big European clubs looking at this deal in utter disbelief, let alone the rest of us in the pl

So a few years after Jose realised Casillas was sh*t, real finally get rid...have to laugh though...his parents have thrown a wobbly and in interview to Spanish newspaper, said their son has been a victim of smear campaign for past five years...and just to help him settle in at Porto, they labelled Porto a third tier team and not good enough for their son...

Mmm...so that's where he got the chip on his shoulder from

So Schweinsteiger, Mata, Herrera, Fellaini, Blind, Schneiderlin...

Are United just buying in bulk in the hope that it all clicks somehow?

They really do look like a desperate bunch just now, club looks like it has no particular plan other than sign a bunch of players and pray it works.

Purple nose really did do wonders for them, they have fell to sh*t since he left.

BR will raid Southhampton again with the Sterling money.

United is doing a FM style of signing, can't see how they could accommodate  Schwinsteiger , Herrea and Schneiderlin in the starting 11.

Oh come on, it's clearly not buy and hope.

  • Schweinsteiger and Carrick to share responsibility at the base of the midfield three (and when needed Schneiderlin) (#6). Neither Carrick nor Schweinsteiger will play all the games in the season and I'm sure the reason we bought Bastian was to stop any scenario where Rooney or Herrera has to play DM.

  • Schneiderlin, Fellaini, sometimes Schweinsteiger and perhaps ADM as the box to box (#8).

  • Then Herrera, Mata, ADM will take the number 10 position.

  • Mata will probably play mostly from the right like he did last season, ADM will play on the left wing, Blind is a utility player who will fit in at LB and at CDM. Depay is young so will probably play mostly cup games.

If you had seen the state our midfield was in last year after only one or two injuries, you would understand why we have had to buy as we have.

Our formation will probably be something like this...

Knowing our injuries, we will likely have at least one MF injured at all times.

Hate the whole scouse media for example Sky Sports, just full of Raheem Sterling bashing.

Phil Thomson and Jamie Carragher have said in the latest article that this deal benefits Liverpool and Raheem Sterling isn't a great player, YEAH i'm sure they would have said that had he of stayed at Liverpool.

Great post. Was thinking the same, these are long over-due signings that we should have dealt with during Moyes's era. We haven't signed a proper defensive minded midfielder since Carrick ffs and look at us now, we have a Schmidfield to die for.

Looks stronger than I thought on paper, hope it's not asking too much for a center back. Seems Woodward is holding firm on De Gea for the time being despite the Casillas sale but who knows what's going behind the scenes just like the same way this Schneiderlin deal happened.

That's a bit sugar coated, it's still a very unbalanced side that whole midfield has two brand new midfielders in it, one with a lot of injuries and well past his prime, the other I have found pretty overrated myself, but that's just my opinion. Herrera was pretty good last season when it came to scoring goals, not sure if he will do his duties to a great fashion consitently though, that remains to be seen. Also Mata is still yet to actually yet to show his true colours, that's if he ever will, he still hasn't looked remotely close to what he did at Chelsea, putting in man of the match performances almost every game.

At United he's gone missing a lot. Di Maria not so impressive but I'm sure he will do much better next season, he's a quality player. As for your strikers I think you definitely need another one, which no doubt you'll be signing. Defence will obviously improve.

Still the Schweinstieger buy just reeks panic too me, perhaps not panic but just spending without second thoughts. I think the wiser decision would have been to go for someone younger. Obviously United are showing they are not willing to risk tranisition. We will be expecting to see this from them, if you really think you aren't going to sign playerso on reputation then I think you're deluded, it's pretty clear that's something United will do in the coming years.

I disagree on the unbalanced point - think it's the most well balanced team we've had for years, including the final Fergie ones. Naturally, I don't agree with your rating of Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin, but I'm not going to go further on that as I doubt we will agree.

The reason we went for Schweinsteiger and not someone younger (maybe like William Carvalho) is that Bastian is going to be Van Gaal's brain and voice on the pitch. He knows the Van Gaal system very well and excelled in it whilst LVG was manager of Bayern. It was a key reason why Bastian became the midfielder he has and (in my opinion and in the opinion of many, if not most, Bayern Munich fans) still is. That's why I think this purchase in particular, rather than any old other midfielder, was made. That's why it is not a random purchase based purely on reputation. That was us with Falcao last season.

I think you're sugar coating the Bastian signing to how you want it, personally I think it's pretty simple, he's a big name, United are one of the biggest sponsors in the world and most supported, they have to keep up their image.

It's their image that will save them from having a downfall after Fergie left, and when I mean downfall I'm not talking about 2-3 seasons not contending for the title.

I'm not going to hold high expectations to what he will bring to your team, a lot of injuries can do a lot to a 30 year old, I don't fear the signing, if it was Bastian without the injuries and a few years ago, I definitely would. As for unbalanced you could be right, but again transition is important, that's almost a new midield you've got right there, that's not going to perform great instantly, it takes time.

Think United those signing. When they had no carrick their central midfield was... Shall we call it lacking?

They can put the new signs with carrick for the big games. They can control the midfield better then.

That team actually looks quite strong but it still lacks a physical, combat presence in midfield which is crucial. It seems like United have 3 or 4 midfielders that do the same thing.

Without a winter break and with his injuries, no one is sure how schweinsteger will cope, but schneiderlin seems, in theory, to be a very good buy for utd. I don't know anything about their other signinga though. No questioning that utd will be up there challenging next season. A club of utd size won't stay not competing for long.
