Is it too early to be depressed that we won't sign a starter?

Featured Replies

Well you can see we are clearly trying to sign players, 2 bids for Stones, Baba looks as if he's on the way too. Both young players that we can get another 10-12 years out of if they do come here.

Two defenders though. I don't even feel our attacking options are good enough.

And from what we saw on Sunday Arsenal who I think are our biggest challengers who were at the end of their pre-season had to park the bus against a team that was in the middle of its pre-season in order to grind out a result and they really didn't look all that convincing, If our players had their full sharpness and fitness back we would have taken that game. So I am not sure what all the doom and gloom is about.

Edited for sake of space, but I 100% agree with you. Le Arse will be our main competition for the title if they can stay can stay healthy.

And we have brought in 3 players. Baba, RLC and Traore.

We haven't had a decent long range striker of the ball since Lamps to be fair.

What's around that can consistently score from midfield arriving late. That's the piece of the jigsaw IMO

we have brought in 3 players. Baba, RLC and Traore.

Wouldn't surprise me if you will be able to count the number of times those 3 start Premier League matches combined this season on your fingers

Ill take that bet. Id set the over/under for those 3 combined at 14. Baba 10, RLC 4 and Traore probably none unless we have nothing to play for in May

new stadium going to cost a lot of dosh, can understand why the club's board wants to spend sensibly or not at all

You just hope it's not like Arsenal and we fall away penny pinching while everyone else gallops ahead.

Well arsenal have managed to still buy some very good players, even though they have been penny pinching. We have a quality side that should be strong enough to compete in all competitions for a few years.

It's only recently when the stadium was paid off that they brought in big names like Ozil and Sanchez, they were not making those transfers before that...not even close to those kind of players.

It was a few weeks ago when he said this:

“I want a striker, because we lost our legend (Didier Drogba),” he stated. “Also a defender and a midfield player to give a little bit more competitiveness to the squad, bring some new blood in, put some players a little bit under pressure.

“They know they have someone waiting, I need that to support my way of working."

Fast forward to now, and we have sold cech to arsenal and brought in falcao. For me, that doesnt chime with the comments above and his tune has now changed, calling out other teams for spending big money and "Buying the league".

Its a strange one. And its one that doesnt sit well with me... i genuinely believe we wont sign anyone else this summer except a replacement LB for luis. Obviously things could change, but as i've said in other threads, this all points to a ropey start to the season for us and i can see us playing catch up from the word go. I expect arsenal to come out all guns blazing like we did last season. I think this will be jose's last year with us.

Thats not me hating or being pessimistic, i genuinely believe something isnt right.

But on the plus side we may just balance the books. Looks like we are morphing into Arsenal!

I thought that had a little more to do with Wenger than not having funds. Didnt he refuse to pay Fulham 4.5m for Schwarzer instead of an even 4? Can you imagine Jose doing that over Stones?

And we have brought in 3 players. Baba, RLC and Traore.

However, Jose's track record suggests these youngsters will barely get a look in ?

Jose would prefer an unconvincing Rambo, etc. every time...

Supposedly he is out to change his record this time around. If he wants to be here in 5 years, or 10, he has to develop young players and he knows it

I hope not, it would be just like Arsenal. If you want to keep winning then you will need to keep spending big from time to time. It's what the top clubs always do.

It looks like we're locking down Rahman, but I'm still not super convinced we've gotten all the pieces we need to defend the title.

If Falcao was the Falcao of 2-3 years ago, then hell yea we'd be set, but right now he's a total shell of his former self. Worried about that quite a bit.

FFP is out the damn window, FIFA even said it was relaxing it starting this year, and Man City was never really bothered by it at all. I want to say our youngsters will make up the spots where we haven't bought...but...eh.

I think our back up option for CM will be Chalobah. I have heard nothing of a loan spell for him and he joined them in pre-season, so i think he could also be used. Why would jose want to stay long term and not use bring through the young players? It would make no sense. I think if he's seriously about long term then we will see youngsters used in some capacity, whether it be in cup games or the odd prem game.

from the guardian:

after a relatively quiet window for his club so far, Mourinho admitted he was concerned by how much Premier League title rivals had strengthened – and agreed that Costa’s ongoing fitness problems were “a bit of a concern”, suggesting the striker would miss their opening fixture, against Swansea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

There are no midfielders with goal scoring ability like Frank. He was a freak of nature, you'll never see a player do that from midfield in the Premier League again.

...Ramsey? (I know it's pretty unrealistic he'll ever be here but now he seems to be injury free I think he would be perfect)

Got the potential but has only had one season two years ago where he look prolific.

Got 6 goals in 29 appearances in the league last season though which isn't anything to write home about.

Be interesting to see how he gets on this year to see if he can recapture his goal scoring touch.
