John Stones

Featured Replies

Jose kinda closed this off this morning on talk sport, but there could be a twist in the tail yet..

I don't think he ruled out any bids. It came across more that he disagrees with the windows being open after league starts. He said I know my club can by or sell but I don't think about the transfer window at the moment with the competition about to start

When asked on talkSPORT on Wednesday morning if the pursuit of Stones is dead, Mourinho said: 'I repeat the same thing every season. For me, the transfer window is over. I don’t like the transfer window when competition starts.

'I know it is open and my club is able to buy or sell, but I don’t like that feeling. As a football coach I am now thinking about my players, about my squad and I don’t want to think about the transfer window.

'What happens happens, but I’m not going to lose one minute of my time thinking about the transfer window and I’ll try to get the best out of my players.

That is not a man ruling out signings. That is quite clearly a man speaking about his preference that the window should close before season starts and for the start of the season he is concentrating on the players he has

Yeah to me that comes across as transfer are no longer his concern someone else will do the negotiating while he coaches the team. I full expect us to carry on pursuing any player we were before but Mourinho will no longer be involved.

I know talksport have to give it a sensationalist headline on their twitter feed so people will click it and listen, but he does not say the window is over for Chelsea whatsoever like they claim.

The transfer window is certainly not over. Unless Jose and the board have collectively lost the plot, there's no way in hell we will go into the season with only 5 recognised defenders. A backup LB will definitely come in, Baba Rahman probably, and hopefully John Stones too. If it was me I'd go up to £35m for him, that is already overpriced enough as it is.

Beginning of the end for Stones time at Everton?

Asked on Thursday whether the situation had affected the 21-year-old, Martínez said: “Yes, and it is something where you hope you learn from it and you get more mature and those experiences are good experiences.

“Clearly John is one of the outstanding young talents that we have in the squad and you are going to get that sort of interest from the outside. John is an Everton player and there is nothing else to comment on that.”

When asked about the prospect of Chelsea coming back with an improved offer, Martínez said: “You shouldn’t worry about situations you cannot affect or control."

Now comes the interesting part:

"I said from the beginning – when you are not a club that is trying actively to sell players, the focus is just to try to be as good as we can at the weekend and see how ready we are individually and as a team. Everything else is stuff that does not bother me now at all.”

Maybe I'm over anaylsing it a bit here but bear with me.

"when you are not a club that is trying actively to sell players"

This is the key line for me, Everton aren't "actively trying" to sell Stones but that doesn't mean to say that they aren't going to. It's like basically saying it's out of his hands. If the money is too good to turn down or that Stones wishes to engineer a move then there's not much he can do.

I think we might see one final push for Stones but not until next week... I think we are giving Everton a chance to find a replacement and respecting that they have an opening fixture to prepare for before going back in with an improved offer.

Well yeah, if we dropped an 80mill offer on them what is more likely to happen?

1. Everton decline the offer again or

2. Kenright and Martinez run skipping to the bank.

As the million dollar man would say, "everybody's got a price"

I see Bluedylan has posted on there as well, and even got the author (Everton fan Paul Wilson) to respond to him. fair play.

Thought Wilson's response was spot on. He linked to an article he wrote previously, asking how did Barnsley feel when Everton came calling for their 18 year old.

As he says, there has always been a hierarchy in football.

It's no mystery or crime that big players end up at big clubs it's where they belong and where they want to be through hook or crook it's gonna happen to a top player at a less prolific club, so why get sour grapes about it, cash in and move on it's part of football

I've got a few comments on that Guardian article... See if you can spot them. Not posting as FC though.

Challenge accepted!

You should be easy to spot, I've spent years reading your posts on here.

Edit: Far too many posts on that article to be bothered reading through. Was it a recent comment or an old one?

As a fellow Chelsea fan I am fighting back the urge to make a 'your mum' joke there. If you were one of my friends I would have already dropped it. See that ultimate respect I have for you my friend?

Hahaha now I feel bad for the comment I made in the Rahman thread...

Affected by the interest.... what he really means is "his head has been turned". And all the abuse the press got for saying stones was interested in joining or keen to join. Martinez stance is weakening, lots of wriggle room in his comments. If Everton fans werent worried we may sign him before...They should be now

Mccarthy has just signed a new deal which I think us good news for us. Looks like it's a bit of a crowd pleaser but they lose stones. I don't think the fans would have happy losing both stones and Mccarthy in the same summer.

After martinez' comments today, I think a deal will be done.

I'd take Naismith as back-up over Falcao, imagine if we signed him as well as Stones? Would never happen but the ire of the Everton fans would be something to behold!

They'd be burning an effigy of Martinez in the stands at Goodison Park.

Be worth it just for that.
