I dont think that's the case, why would that in particular have anything to do with it? JT was the last player to break through.. .that means I'll never make it here. I think that's also a bit of a false narrative considering we had an academy graduate start the CL Final and his name wasn't Terry.

 

More likely he doesn't see a path to the first team, he's 19 so he's probably getting ahead of himself anyway, and he wants to leave. I don't blame him. If the guy above me in the pecking order was the worst player on the pitch for a few months and I didn't get so much as a minute of playing from it I'd say f**k this and walk out too.

 

There's still time for Conte to convince him to stay if he fancies him. Or not. Personally this is probably the player I'd be least concerned about leaving if this Sterling kid is as good as some on here are saying.

That finals appearance was his only appearance in the CL that season and he made a grand total of 7 league appearances that season. We all love to trot that out to opposition fans but if the strategy wasn't park the bus and the context of key defensive players missing,Bertrand never makes that final. And it would, in particular, have something to do with it as it shows that never under Roman has an academy product become a regular first team player at this club. That the only CFC academy player to do so under Roman was, as pointed out by another poster, one that we had to buy back from a club for over 20millionn just a short while after selling him for peanuts, relatively.

Because it shows that the lack of a path to the first team is a systematic problem for this cluband has been for almost as long as Aina has been living on this green Earth.... and not the actions of one manager, no matter how desperately some would like to portray it as that.

I wasnt aware there was a narrative going on about Bertrand, maybe Ive started one!

He made 50 appearences for us that season and the next, in my mind that is a fair shake at it.

The rest is all speculation on our part isnt it? Im not having a go at you. I think its more likely he sees the players abead of him and a new manager and thinks hes got no path into the squad plus Im sure there a few people in his ear about how he would start some games for other clubs. Rather than oh look JT is the only one in x years to stay in the first team, Ive got no chance. If thats his mentality, good riddance.

I understand these young players have won everything they can already and want more (which is awesome) but should we be handing out fat contracts and guarantees to them all at 19 or 20? They could be worked into the squad better, this season was a great chance to do so, and its true we have failed them in every possible way so far.

seems like a big turn around for him to have signed a new contract, lets see what happens over the summer regarding his first team prospects or shunted on loan

"I was very pleased with my performance, I just wanted to have an impact and try and do what the manager asked of me. I thoroughly enjoyed it even though the result didn’t go the team’s way. It was a good experience in a packed stadium.

At half-time the manager just said to me and the team that we should press higher, and that everything we do should be press, press, press. It did seem to work as I thought we were edging to get a goal in the second half. It was unfortunate it didn’t go our way."

He's looked excellent for years in the youth team. At first team level he looked a level above Baba in terms of composure, strength, distribution, first touch....... just about any quality you look for in a full back.

I've really not been impressed by Baba, and I can't think Conte would have been on Saturday.

It really does say a lot when your youth players are out performing £15m+ signings. Think Ola has shown why we need to start showing faith in our youth and not wasting money on people like Miazga, Baba etc.

Impressed with him today. He looks ready.

I think he's ready to make his big step in his life. Very talented defender, he can do the job, he will reach more experience and he will become better and better.

Yup, and if we dont plan on starting him, i hope we can find a great team where he can play first division football as a starter. No bench please unless we plan on giving him meaningful minutes.
