Papy Djilobodji

Featured Replies

To be honest, I got the same feeling. I'm waiting for Jose to give him a start, maybe he will catch a spot in the starting line.

I can see Mourinho start Djilobodji as a sign to Terry, Cahill etc. that they have been poor and he needs to look at other options. And I really expect Djilobodji to surprise everyone. I am also pretty dissapointed that Mourinho won't even play him in a cup game. Give the guy a chance!!!

Mourinho isn't interested in playing players who aren't his personal favourites.

So why are you hoping in vain that he will play Papy?

So anyone know anything about this chap... at all

All I know is that Times corespondent Philippe Auclair, who is normally very reasonable, declared him to be worth about £250k and said that (I think) Sunderland and West Ham had turned down the opportunity to sign him.

Basically he's a club signing, not a Jose signing and thus will be forever on the fringes.

I was one of the few that probably followed his career. A standout player in a very weak Ligue 1 club side. I don't know why he gets all the hate from some correspondents, but a lot of people rate him very highly and were expecting him to feature for a top team sooner than later. He was a titan at his club side before coming here, is really fast and physical, plus is very agile for someone his size. Prone to the odd mistake, but then again he had so much defending to do at his own club that mistakes are bound to happen to the best. In general he has lightening quick decision making and knows when to tackle and when to intercept and when to shadow... A finished product in that sense. In my opinion he's an absolute steal, but a shame so few people are actually aware of this.

His ball control is pretty poor, but thats the only thing negative I can say about him.

This is an article from before Chelsea signed him:

As a result of Djilobodji’s fine defensive displays, underlined most suitably by Nantes’ extensive overachievements this season, which sees them sit joint third in the least goals conceded table as we head into to the Ligue 1 winter break. He has been the subject of intense, almost harassing levels of interest from Marseille who remain a big admirer of the Senegalese international’s talents.

He is quick along the ground, dominant in the air and usually positions himself well. Nantes’ full-backs have sometimes left him exposed, but put him in a stronger team and the physical nature of the Premier League could see him improve even further.

And this article by Allan Jiang, a known talent spotter:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2255156-top-30-most-underrated-footballers-playing-in-europe/page/14

Nantes' Senegalese centre-back Papy Djilobodji, 25, is an impressive defender. He is a safe tackler (0.8 fouls per game) and reads play excellently to intercept 2.9 passes per game.

So some people say that Sunderland and West Ham turned him down, but I say they were absolute idiots if they did. I honestly think he's better than Cahill, possibly Terry in current form, and also better as in more experienced than Zouma.

last minute deal, didn't go to CL so should have more chance to be introduced in domestic competition.. when can we see him play? if he only makes the bench against walsall, chance is it would be sometime till we get to him in real action.

My thought exactly but let's see for the next few games.. if he hardly features till christmas then ya could bet he's as good as gone..

We once had Mazacar.

Now we have Bapycao.

I wouldn't mind having his salary and not appear on the bench for a long time.

Eager to see the him play. Yeah, he has a funny name. Yeah he's a bit of a nobody, but give the man a start soon, Jose. A half even.

The last defender to be bought from lig1 had a bit of a mouthful for a name as well. Look how he turned out!

Copied and pasted from the youth on loan thread.

'Neither were the majority of our first team I really don't get this whole 'jose buy' cliche surely he can recognise if someone is talented enough.
Surely it more boils down to whether he fits Jose style of play or not/ are good enough or not, rather than if jose bought him or not.'

Whether Jose bought them is irrelevant to whether they're good enough to play for the side.
Courtois, Cahill, Terry, Azpi, Ivanovic, Ramires, Oscar and Hazard all of which were not bought by Jose play regularly.

All new signings that we make will have Jose systems and philosophy in mind and will suit his gameplan, whether Jose is involved or not.
There maybe the odd youngster where it is just for profit but that's not applicable in this case.
The fact that Djilobodji is of a similar build and play style to Zouma would suggest he suits Jose's style, so it is more a reason of quality.
Since we know Djilobodji was signed as 4th maybe even 5th choice CB and really just in case we had an injury crisis, he can't really be expecting to play that many games, I was surprised we didn't see him in the Carling cup but my guess is that was more down to our poor start and the need to find momentum and play a few players back into form.
Also have our Cb's been playing bad enough to warrant being dropped, Zouma has looked like a beast so I wouldn't be dropping him anytime soon and I think Zouma needs a level head next to him so that leads to either Terry or Cahill, and I don't really think Djilobodji would suit being partnered with Zouma.

I'd put money on dildobody not starting a single premier league game this season. Loaned out to dutch obscurity next season. Never to be seen again.

Oh dildobody.

Do wonder what goes through a player's mind at the point of signing. Does he actually think having never spoken to the manager that he will force his way into their plans? I can see its obviously a once in a lifetime opportunity, but if jose is to be believed when he said he'd never even heard of dildobody until he signed, what on earth is the player thinking by signing a contract here?

Is it all just about the money? This is beyond even squad backup purchase, the man isnt even making the match day squads.

Just bizarre all round.

If you're from a modest if not poor background, with a few dependents, it's probably a no-brainer. Sign an improved contract, and either play you way into the squad or go out on loan.

Shame. The guy is better than any of our current central defenders (including Terry who is past the hill). He really should be the first choice starter, but won't be because he's an obscure purchase... Hope he gets a cup game start and shows just how underrated he is.

Honestly... can't understand the footballing world where a player like David Luiz is sold for 50 mln, while a better player than him is treated like a  fourth rate defender.
