Azpilicueta is an an absolutely solid player gives 100% in every game and could lead by example but that's not his nature. He does his job and doesn't force the best out of those around him. Zouma is still learning the game and is still defensively suspect so him being captain is zilch as he needs an experienced head next to him giving him orders. That leaves Fabregas who has the respect of those around him maybe not the player everyone looks at and associates with workrate but I think he is underrated in that department and does work for the team. We've seen him in games marshalling the midfield ordering people around so he does have that authority and can handle the pressure. We've seen what pressure did to Hazard so making him captain is a no no in my opinion, too much weight on his shoulders.

I don't think we have a player at the club ready to be captain, other than ivanovic.

I would take Azpi over Fab, but is he vocal enough? Is he a big enough personality? I'm not sure, maybe the best option though, but this is all depending on what happens to Ivan.

The lack of stand out possibilities is worrying, For me if Cahill is staying then he should get it whilst nurturing Zouma for the future.
And even GC doesn't fill me with a much confidence as he once would have.

He was Bolton captain though. Surely the qualities needed are there

Id like to see it earned/given to Curtois. He's got that fire which I think only Costa, Zouma and JT have. Cahill is interesting, he may be 3rd choice come next season though. Thibo isnt going anywhere and also has the fact hes going to be if not already world class in his corner

Bran would be obvious but hes got how many years left?

Azpilicueta represents all the traits I want to see in our captain. He is passionate, leads by example, always performs to a good standard including this season, Never say die attitude and absolutely world class in his position.

Willian would be interesting. Not sure how well he speaks English.

Prob Tibo or Cesc makes the most sense, like a lot of you have said.

Sad there isn't a future, long-term England international ala JT or Frank in the wings.

It will be Ivan ... a total disaster because our defence will continue to look totally disjointed playing Azpi out of position.

Totti was Roma's captain even though he wasn't a regular. Maybe Ivan as captain but Dave as vice captain?

I think some people might be confusing "who would make a good captain?" with "which player do I like best?".

Looking at the list I don't see anybody who stands out as obvious candidates. In terms of personality, I could see Ivanovic make a good leader but his poor form is a concern. Cahill would put in a fine effort go but he's not exactly a nailed on starter for us. Azpilicueta is a good, consistent player and extremely likeable but I'm not sure he has ever demonstrated much in the way of natural leadership ability. Fabregas seems more focal and can be inspirational on his day but I'm not sure he has the steel required to motivate others when things are going against us on the pitch.

So it seems we have to pick the best from a 'bad' bunch; maybe we have been spoilt by having such a fantastic captain for so many years. I think out of the current options Fabregas would edge it for me, at least for the time being until some of the younger players have matured. I do have my reservations but Fabregas definitely has the seniority, experience and respect required in a leader. Perhaps the added responsibility would give him the kick up the arse he seems to need at times.

Ivanovic as captain? He shouldn't even be in the team.

I agree with the votes for Azpilicueta. Won't replace John Terry but will be a good captain.

By the way, why do people call him Dave? Is his middle name David?

Dave is an abbreviation of Azpilicueta ;)

Leadership, keeping morale up, mentoring younger players, etc are all obvious criteria for captaincy.

For me, a good captain has to pass an additional test: Would they be willing to confront the manager on behalf of their teammates when the players have a legitimate gripe against the manager?

I don't think highly of Wayne Rooney overall, but I admire his cojones when he and Michael Carrick confronted van Gaal and basically told him that his "philosophy" sucks for this particular group of players, and that he's stifling them and then turning around and blaming them. Similarly, Scott Parker confronted Felix Magath about abusing the younger players.

In these cases, the captains must be willing to assume the personal wrath and vengeance of the manager who will inevitably shoot the messenger.

Who in this squad can do that? JT with his "don't f**k with me" attitude and indispensability clearly could. I think Costa could as well, but he'd be unable to keep morale high and unify the team, so he's not a good candidate. Courtois strikes me as too selfish to put himself on the line like that. I think Azpilicueta and Mikel would pass this test. Hazard I could see going either way. Don't have an opinion on Zouma, Ivanovic, Cahill, Willian, and others who have been suggested.

Sad to say that there is absolutely no one at the club who is capable of being the Captain of our team if JT leaves.....end of

If you think there is, then you are turning into an arsenal fan... I've a deluded person ! LoL

The club needs to recruit a new player who could be a captain otherwise we are in the Sh*t if JT leaves
