Jorginho is.... (well now was) a Blue

There was a situation 2nd half yesterday. Liverpool broke and it ended up with Salah 1 on 1 with Kante. No other defenders behind and covering. Kante came away with the ball. If it had been Jorginho in that same defensive scenario, 99 times out of a 100, Salah would do him and score.

Why is that relevant? Very different midfielders with very different qualities.

Because certain fans prefer a more tough tackling defensive midfielder, like a Mascherano or a Fernandinho than a Jorginho.

Even though I'm probably not @Gol15 's biggest fan, I think you should mention Busquets as a player similar to him. Just to be fair.

Busquets never had to play in a 2 man midfield from what I recall. I preferred Jorginho under Sarri and Lamps when he had two people in the middle of the park to do his running and ball progression for him. With him in a 2 man midfield you’re basically relying on just Kovacic or whoever else to do the creativity/running for him.

Except Jorginho casually had the most progressive passes and passes into the final third out of all of our midfielders for several seasons. The fact that he does his role and stays back as a DM should benefits the whole team, Kovacic doesn't have the discipline to do that, nor Kante.

He does have that extra CB behind him though and the CBs either side of him seem to have a bit of license to step in to midfield.

Obviously you’re going to have more progressive passes as a DLP. Even knocking it to Kovacic to then go and dribble into their half will count as a ‘progressive pass’. Hopefully we go for Rice who does everything Jorginho does and more.

None of that is obvious. Rice is actually a worse passer than Jorginho and plays in a counter-attacking team that doesn't care to have the majority of possession most of the time, he couldn't do sh*t to Jorginho even while he played for England.

Have you seen how much Rice has improved this season to last? He’s arguably the best CM in the league this season.

Good for a mid-table team

Was certainly the best player on the pitch when they beat us last month.

Stats, stats, stats, stats ≤ 3 points.

Rice was superb for them. Even had to have a a spell at centre-half and still looked good.

Message to self. Remember to insert meaningless GIF of your choice here. To reinforce the opinion.

Did nothing, got a lucky win. First you complain about the stats but point to the 3 points won which is also just a stat in the end of the day isn't it?

But if 3 points is your main argument, Jorginho has more 3 points won in the Premier League than Rice, and while having less appearances...

I was never a fan of Jorginho under Sarri or Lampard. Also, Jorginho, Kante and Kovacic all playing together used to do my head in, it never really worked. Kante especially looked out of sorts. It's no coincidence that Kante has never really looked that good in a 3 man midfield. Every season he has played in the Premier League he has looked much better in a 2. In a 2 man midfield, he has the perfect balance of defending and attacking, in a 3 man midfield, he needs to focus more on the attacking side and that's not his game.

Kante and Kovacic are also much worse players when they aren't constantly involved. They are two players that thrive on momentum. The more involved they, the better they play. In a 3 man midfield, they wouldn't both be required to play that way, they would take in turns and I just don't think that suits either of them.

@Gol15 it was 3 fluke goals, the Bowen one went through ACs legs and Mendy should have saved it. He played he was both pi$$Ed and high at the same time.

While I am not fan of buying a player based on him being MoTM against us I am a fan of Rice and think he would be a good player for us. Give Jorgi and Kante are getting on we will need replacement on day. Not convinced Gilmour will be solution.

I agree it's not like we were outplayed there, just fluke goals lost us the game. Rice really wasn't the MOTM there either but you know I thought that Bakayoko would be a great player for us since he had what, 2.5 tackles per game in France? His defensive qualities didn't matter and I'm skeptical about signing another 100m player so soon after Lukaku, I believe we can find better alternatives for less money.

With that said I actually supported that signing when Lampard wanted him back then in January, I openly said let Lampard have him if he really needs him. I just don't really care to give much respect to people that know nothing else but to find ways to undermine Jorginho, specially not in the mood to care when we were winning against Spurs while playing a back 4 formation with Jorginho and Saul in the midfield. So when the first thing that someone wants to push forward is how West Ham has the best central midfielder in the whole league, I couldn't care less in all honesty.

I am not so sure that is the reason though.

Kante, kova and jorgi all more comfortable playing deeper so you need to play with two flying fb (Lamp style) but once you do this Jorgi suddenly become a massive liabilty.

Under Sarri, because our rw tend to stay wide and our rb play more conservative which force kante to play higher. We all know that is not his best attributes but he had his best scoring number with us that season.

Yes, he has been tremendous. I'm really quite worried about the rumours linking him to Man Utd. He'll fill an obvious hole in their team, he'll do so incredibly well, and they'll have a quality option in that midfield for the next decade.

I believe west ham wanted 100 m for him.

I agree Kante looks better in a two and if i have to choose any sane person chooses Kante over Jorginho. That's why i'd like to see Kante - Kova for the rest of the season or sign someone with more in their locker than Jorginho and doesn't slow the game down so much.

So your argument was Rice is good at a mid table team like West Ham and they only beat us with flukey goals. But then you go on to praise us beating an actual mid table team like Spurs in which we relied on flukey goals just because Jorginho is playing.

FYI West Ham have the best CM in the country.
