We've got a new Kepa

Featured Replies

The way he took his pen suggested that he really didn’t want to take one. Just put his laces through it. Don’t blame him though - it’s rare keepers have to take them.

He got close to a couple of pens but they were all top notch so not much he could do.

As you say, majority of penalties were really well taken but think he should have saved Konate's one.

Will be interesting to see if Kepa sticks around after this season as he is clearly No. 2 and with Mendy getting better & better, cannot see him getting much game time. Hopefully the club are looking to discover a good young keeper who can come through the academy, go out on loan for a season or two and then take over from Mendy in a few seasons time.

I will be very surprised if Edou declines as early as Cech. Injury permitting his slow start to his career should (touch wood) help him last a lot longer, similar to Thiago.

Maybe get Marcin Bulka back from PSG. They don't need him.

Bulka is 22 and played 15 senior games in his career, that is really bad. He looked good in a friendly a few years back so I am surprised he hasn't been able to get any game time since. There must be something wrong with him or he is flying under the radar like Mendy.

PSG only let him go on loan this season, and he mistakenly believed he had a good chance to Crack in to their first team.

Didnt he play against Psg recently and got motm and knocked them out of an important domestic cup, whilst still being their player.

He prob would of got more starts had it been anyehere other than PSG with Navas and Donnarumma.

I think its time this thread is refreshed again!

Give him a run of games! He improved massively when Mendy went to AFCON. It'll do Kepa's confidence some good sticking him in as number one for a bit until Mendy stops taking kicking lessons from Werner. Whats the worst he can do? Concede 7 in 2?

I agree that we should sit Mendy on the bench until he recovers his form, he’s been making mistakes that weren’t there some months ago.

Probably BS but the rags have reported Newcastle want him as their new number 1 and are offering around 50mill.

If it happens to be true we would be mad not to make this happen lol.

I’d put Roger Freestone over Mendy judging by the last few games!

Mendy was rubbish on Saturday and rubbish today. By rights Kepa should be given a shot on Saturday.

Only just saw these. With respect thankgod Tuchel didn't agree.

Why not? Kepa was great when Mendy went to AFCON and didn't play in open play after I don't think!

Compared to what we're accustomed to from him? Sure, but he still conceded goals that don't go in on Edou's watch (KDB's shot going in thanks to the infamous weak fists and Brightons goal from a corner). The last time we played Kepa over Mendy out of choice in a big game it cost us the FA Cup (Tielmens said himself he was told to shoot on sight if he got an opening).

Mendy was next to flawless for 18 months and has earned the right to play through a dip in form (which for me is not close to being as bad as made out). Alisson totally lost the plot last season yet there was never any question of him losing his place.

The season is done now though. At that point in time, Mendy had dropped off rapidly, soon after Kepa covering him during his travel so well. It screamed of a chance to include Kepa again, then Mendy could've upped his game due to that. Mendy was terrible in that period and I don't think even Kepa could concede as many if he tried.

Still stand by that, Kepa should have been given games in that period. Not just the chance of a Row Z penalty every 6 months.

Mendy’s dip in form was causing us goals, and he was partly responsible for our going out in the CL against Real Madrid. So as @Mod, I stand by what I said then given the situation back then. I don’t think Kepa is the better keeper, but he was rotating based on form all the team bar the goalie.

He was the main reason we were knocked out of the CL.

Not only the obvious 3rd goal, but the Mendy of the year before saves Benzemas first at the Bridge, as he did a very similar header in the second leg of the semi final when we faced them.

I stand by our comments at the time too. Mendy was awful during that period and has series question marks around him if he actually had a Malouda year or not.

Mendy has been poor during the 2nd half of the season. Kepa has been poor for 2 seasons.

If we can can anyone to buy Kepa, for a reasonable price of say £25m + then we should take it.

If not, then I have no issue with him staying as back up.

Even in the last 2 games mendy saved 1v1s vs leicester and watford.... he is one of the reasons we dont conceded from every half decent shot from 30 yards or are not shouting kepa kepa from every corner.. Even top goal keepers make costly errors comes with the job.. plus mendy has only player 2-3 seasons at this level.. Allison at this point in his career 3-4 years in was a back-up keeper at Roma..!
