Billy Gilmour

I’m not saying by any means that he was our poorest player that day, but by his standards it wasn’t one of his better games.

When one of your main strengths as a player is getting the ball on the deck and picking out quality passes. When you're picked to play on a surface that's closer resembling a potato patch than a football pitch you're facing an uphill battle before the game has even started.

It's hard to judge most of the performances in that Barnsley game because the surface really did hinder the possession style football we play.

Were now being linked with some 28 year old journeyman German midfielder so I wouldn't hold your breath hoping to see Gilmour playing anytime soon. I've a horrible feeling he isn't going to get his chance under Tuchel and will drift away from the club.

I think a loan is a good idea for him. He's had a few great games for the club so far but he's had a few shockers as well (Crystal Palace away last season comes to mind).

Tuchel have been open about the fact that he's fourth choice midfielder right now. So chances will be limited. If he could go to a decent PL-side and "prove" he can handle the physicality in this league over time I think that would do a lot to convince Tuchel he should play him more.

But we complain quite often about Jorginho's lack of strength and speed and Billy is unfortunately even more vulnerable in terms of that you'd have to say.

Fair enough, let's instead send on loan Jorginho and give Gilmour the chances so that we can at least have a change of scapegoat. Maybe Jorginho can prove at WestBrom that he can handle physicality 😉

Lazy journalism isn’t. We’ve got a German manager so he must want to sign every German he can get his hands on!

Oh without a doubt, this summer will see us linked with every german from Karl Marx to Michael Schenker. But its worrying how little Tuchel is using Gilmour, after we kept him from going out on loan. 4 or 5 months of no top level football is not going to help him at the moment.

To be fair to Tuchel since he’s come in Jorginho and Kovacic have been playing very well together and then he’s got Kante to factor in as a more experienced senior player. I think Billy will get a chance he just has to be patient in the same way Foden had to bide his time at City.

Munkworth and Sindre are right when they point out the BG is way down the pecking order and therefore any chances will be limited, if at all?  Remember, TT dropped Mason in his first game in charge in favour of ‘experience’, so you get a measure of the man from that - I don’t see Billy getting many opportunities?

Billy is small and he will always have to eliminate those prejudices in the managers mind before he ever gets to kick a ball, not sure TT is the man to take that chance no matter what he sees in training ?

Would Billy going on loan be the worst outcome for him/us - go “prove” himself at another PL club ?

My worry is mainly down to him not getting a single minute in the league so far under Tuchel. I get why he's not picking him, but why keep him at the club then? He needs minutes on the pitch, otherwise this season is a complete write of for him, and we've seem this happen before.

To be fair, I’d love to have Michael Schenker at Chelsea playing.... 😎🤘🏼

I agree that jorginho-kova have been solid since Tuchel arrived, but to play very well they have to do so much more than what they actually do. And it’s not fair to compare City to our team, I think that City have a team where either Jorginho or Kovacic would not be starters. I don’t see that much difference between what they offer to what Gilmour can offer, in fact, I think that given playing time Gilmour can offer more than Jorginho or Kova. The thing I don’t want is to see him leave without having a run of games to show if he can cut it.

I’m not, I’m comparing the progress of a young player at a similar club who wasn’t getting game despite being a ‘big prospect’ who’s now reaping the benefits of his patience.

But that’s it, it’s not a similar club. The quality that Foden had in front of him in the pecking order was staggering. That’s not the case in our club, where in front of Gilmour we have Jorginho, Kovacic and Kante, hardly the same quality of City to justify Gilmour not making even the bench and get some minutes here and there.

All three are full, regular international players and one of them has a World Cup winners medal knocking about in the glovebox of his mini... :laugh2:

Personally I think you are miles off on that one Sindre. In terms of strength, fair enough. Gilmour is a kid and will probably, (hopefully) develop a bit more physically. But in terms of speed he has way, way more than Jorginho. And he can run with the ball at his feet. His range of passing is better IMO too.

Having seen the way we play out of defence tonight, Gilmour really is the perfect player for that role. Jorginho had a good game tonight but i reckon Gilmour would offer us a lot more.

Come on Tuchel, you know you want to...

Billy is actually the same weight as and 5cm taller than Marco Verratti, the lynch pin of Tuchel's PSG midfield ... so not necessarily a factor ?

I think that he will eventually get a chance under TT ... all it takes is a couple of knocks or a suspension for Jorginho/Kovacic/Kante ...

With some zoomed out camera angles and when UHD is available (or I’m watching BT via sky and they downgrade the picture quality out of spite) it’s hard to tell Mount, Kova, Pulisic (pre-beard) and Jorginho apart.

Unless of course one of them looks like they’re running through custard - then I know it’s Jorginho!

I really wouldn't worry about it that much tbh. If a player is that good and works within the specific system he'll get a fair chance. The way I see it, you (in general, not you in particular) worry too much that one of your accademy lads gets unfairly treated but I reckon you can't bring them in all at once in a situation like now where you have a ruthless chase for top 4 and next to no time to really learn a new system properly - which is especially crucial for the (very) young players who don't have at least the experience already to rely on. Not sure if it's good to just throw 'em into the cold water (bit like Havertz at the start of the season) when you don't have a fully functional team-hierachy and well implemented system that makes it easier for the young ones.

Ah, so he's too tall for his weight, that explains it

looks like he maybe should of gone to Rangers on loan, would of probably got some playing time under SG and Gary mac..

Tuchel was never going to let any options go for his own sake, as it stands he is not in it for the long haul so probably can't care too much about developing young players. Would've been nice for Billy to pick up a winner's medal and join in the celebrations though.

Nothing like a bit of wild speculation on a Sunday morning!
