Maatsen can then play in his preferred position. Or Colwill can continue to play there. Or Bash can fill in there. Plenty of options as good or better than Cucurella.
August 31, 20232 yr If MU is pulling out from signing Cucurella because they saw him play once yesterday I really start to understand how they have declined as a club. 😅

Then if Marc leaves we havw just Ben as left back, meaning most of the season with Colwill or Dylan Williams as iur left back when Ben gets injured.

Not sure why people think that Maatsen would be sold or would want to move if Cucurella stays. Maatsen hasn’t been played in the same position as Cucurella, yesterday or in preseason. He’s not seen as a LB nor a LWB by Pochettino. And Maatsen can be very good where he played yesterday, more centrally and advanced, he had a very good second half. I don’t see them as occupying the same space, so whether Cucurella goes or stays, it should not make a difference to what happens with Maatsen, unless you’re thinking about FFP.

With Cucurella going on loan, Maatsen has the backup leftback spot to himself. It would be silly if he doesn’t sign the contract now to ensure a bigger fee down the line for him and to cement a place on the team.

United have seemingly turned their interest to Reguilon after seeing Cucurella played last night. Do the club and Poch even view Maatsen as a LB? Hasn't played there at all yet.

Again, he hasn’t played as a LB by Pochettino so, independently of what happens with Cucurella, Maatsen is not seen as LB cover. He is though competing with Mudryck for the LW position played by Chilwell at the moment.
August 31, 20232 yr Rumour is united wanted to send him back in Jan which would have been a terrible deal anyway - screams them not playing him and him being cover
August 31, 20232 yr This was clearly known prior to the match yesterday. Not fussed, always rated Marc very highly.

Key point is Maatsen has not signed a new deal and would leave for free next summer. So if he does not sign very soon I expect we sell.

He was good at Brighton and remember him being the best player on the pitch against us. Memories are often conveniently short in football. I certainly hope so. Imagine if Cucu is killing it for United, that is whole lot of 🤑🤑🤑

You could be right, but it’s got nothing to do with what happens with Cucurella. If he doesn’t want to stay at Chelsea, knowing that he is rated by Pochettino, then by all means sell him. I’m fed up with players that want to go like Mount, if they don’t want to stay and fight for their place, then get as much as possible for them and move on.

If he is not willing to sign we need to sell him by close of the window.

He wasn’t the worst player last night, he even started the move for the second goal and had a few crosses that should have found one of our attackers. He’s not the best quality defender but this trend to just bash him even when he’s done nothing wrong is not rational.

We always seem to need a Luiz, a Willian, a Mikel like player to be blamed for everything.

Exactly Axman, some fans are ridiculous, who else am I supposed to scapegoat? Don't take that away from us.

And why does he wander into central midfield so often? Is he a frustrated number 6? Three times, for some unknown reason, he turned up in the right back position !!!!!! He is a mini-me David Luiz when it comes to positional awareness. Absolutely clueless. He was a 6/10 last night. Against AFC Wimbledon. If we had to rely on him as our left back for a month in the EPL....... Good night Vienna.
