The Football Association has announced they can take ‘disciplinary action’ against clubs whose fans sing the words ‘rent boy’.

Such news comes after a recent increase in cases of the homophobic chants within the game, particularly towards Chelsea fans.

Alleged chanting took place from some Manchester City supporters during their FA Cup win against the Blues on Sunday.

This occurred just two days after homophobic chants were targeted at Everton boss and former Chelsea player Frank Lampard during their loss against Manchester United.

Amid the recent incidents, the FA said in a statement: “Today, the FA has formally written to all clubs across the Premier League, EFL, National League, Women’s Super League, Women’s Championship and Steps 2-4, to remind them that it can pursue formal disciplinary action against any club whose supporters engage in discriminatory behaviour, now including the use of the term ‘rent boy’.

“This important step follows the recent successful prosecution of an individual by the Crown Prosecution Service for homophobic abuse, specifically relating to the term ‘rent boy’.

“The FA has now informed all clubs that it considers the ‘rent boy’ chant to be a breach of the FA Rules. These rules apply to the conduct of supporters at both home and away fixtures, and clubs at all levels of English football have a responsibility to ensure their spectators behave appropriately when attending matches.”

The statement added: “The FA takes all allegations of discrimination extremely seriously and would encourage anybody who has been subject to, or a witness of incidents of discrimination, to report it to the FA, the club or the relevant authorities so it can be investigated thoroughly.

Slight tangent but I remember on Reddit someone asking why it was so offensive for fans to sing that too us. He said "Chelsea are only called rent boys because they loan (rent) out so many players.. I don't see what the big deal is" 🤦‍♂️

To be honest, It's never bothered me. There's far worse people sing and shout at games.

It's never really bothered me, but I can see how it's problematic and it's origins are clearly homophobic in nature. 

I do enjoy other fans twisting themselves in knots about why they should be allowed to sing it though.

Apparently due to last summers lack of rainfall, meadow owners have been advised to let the grass grow over the winter months!

10 Lawn Mowers have now been confiscated and a dog called Spot is at Battersea dogs home due to be re-homed!

I'm sure the ability for the FA to now 'take action' against the this chant will have the same effect as their ability to take action against racist chants, sexist chants and other things such as Hillsborough and Munich chants has had.

Man City condemned the chant after Sunday's game, so it can only be a matter of time before City announce the banning of over two thousand season ticket holders.

The only people likely to be offended are male prostitutes; not a huge amount of them amongst our match going support I'd wager  

Most Chelsea fans i know aren,t bothered by the chant, it also has a certain irony given the origins of most male prostitutes in London.

I applaud this if Spurs fans are not even able to sing, 'We are the y*ds' seems only fair that the rent boy chant is included too.

Never about loans for me more about young men servicing MPs with particular sexual needs and of course this is near Westminster and we are seen as the closest team.  

Never met a Chelsea fan that is remotely offended by this. Pretty funny that it's being banned though, since it will no doubt annoy the rival fans. 

 

Presumably it's the word Chelsea that is the deal breaker. If the Man City fans were just chanting rent boys, they could say that is was a self deprecating chant, an ironic humorous chant to themselves.

After all Spuds are okay chanting y*ds about themselves.
