I even remember the day he was signed, on the same day as Andy Townsend.

My Chelsea allegiance doesn't go that far, I had to google when he signed (1990, and his 2nd name is Frank 🙂 ). He is however "my" first captain, and I rejoiced whenever he was called up for England, I think the only Chelsea player for years.

What a fantastic captain he was, leading and fighting and not giving up. His tenacity was only equalled by JT. We desperately need someone like that again.

I recall annoying some fans sitting behind me at one of his early games at the Bridge as I kept shouting "will you take him on!" and a bloke behind said " will you shut up".  Ha ha.  I would have been about 17...  Was wanting a Pat Nevin style winger but we got a Beckham type (i.e. a good cross without beating the full back).  Average winger but a masterstroke when moved to the middle and rightly credited as a legend....

Yes i do. He scored a F ucking great goal.

The other thing, I have his book.  He slates Bobby Campbell.  Says how he was nasty, particularly to Alan Dickens, destroyed his confidence etc.  He really portrayed Campbell as a nasty piece of work.  Then when he died, in the Chelsea programme, there was an article from Wise with him saying what a "lovely bloke" Campbell was.  I know he had died, so you can't say what you really think but I recall that article in the programme and me saying to my Dad, "that's not what he said in his book...." .

Incidentally, I've listened to a few podcasts from players from that era and they seemed to like Campbell but there were a few saying he was flash, posing with expensive watches which Wise alluded to as well in his book.

I'm not bashing Campbell, I just found it interesting that Wise had done a complete u-turn, thought he may have said "can you ask someone else" as I tend to believe his book is what he really thinks.

Didn't he pull JT by the ear and take him house shopping as soon as he (i.e. JT) got his first pro contract? He was an F'n legend. Shame about his stint at Milwall, but would take him (or a clone of him) back in a heartbeat.

Good player for us - one of our best during the early / mid 90s and seemed to get better with age. Rightly got rewarded with his fair share of England caps too.

Not sure about his character in general though.

This is the problem when adults idolise footballers when they know nothing about their character but cause they play for the football team they support they ignore it. Dennis Wise is from the White City estate my mate is a caretaker there some of the stories he's heard about Wise and his family well lets put it this way they are not complimentary. His first 18 months at Chelsea he was dreadful but fair play to him he turned it round but I lost all respect for him after the incident when he played for Leicester it has to be the most cowardly thing I've ever heard of.

For those who don't know him and his teammate Callum Davidson had an argument in a hotel over a game of cards it was broke up and everyone assumed that was that. An hour later while Davidson was asleep in his room Wise attacked him breaking his jaw and nose I'm sorry there's no excusing that you either shake hands or have a straightner. Dennis Wise then had the temerity to complain after Leicester sacked him brought them to a tribunal won then lost on appeal he was lucky he didn't end up in jail.

Dennis Wise did a lot as Chelsea captain and I respect everything he done on the pitch off the pitch absolutely not.

Yeah, it's that sort of thing that means I can never look on his as fondly as other past players, not to mention the Millwall and Dirty Leeds connections.

I always thought it was a bit of a shame how it was often overlooked how good a footballer he was, he was seen as a niggly nasty clogger at times by idiotic fans.

He was outstanding on the ball, superb passer and tackler.

Horrible as well, obviously, but he was our horrible....loved Wisey.

He was a real leader during his time with us, and seemed to play a huge role helping all the star players brought in by Hoddle and Gullit to settle and feel part of the club.

Agreed. Although in footballing terms as player manager of 2nd division Millwall he got them to the FA Cup Final, which is an achievement.

Had a brief chat with him in the players lounge at Brammall Lane, after we’d played there sometime in the early 90’s- my mate was playing for Sheffield Utd- quite a scary face up close, mad looking eyes. Started out as a winger from Wimbledon that could cross the ball with either foot, then became a central midfielder. Very important player for us during that period

And during the Millwall game in 1995 the Millwall fans chanted Taxi every time he got the ball. In reference to him allegedly clumping a black taxi driver after having been to Terry Venables place Scribes West shortly before and pending trial

Although he'd be a walking red-card in this VAR era, he would very much be a perfect modern no 6.

No. Wisey would be too smart for VAR.

I was in the San Siro when he scored a " f**king great goal" about 25 years (?) ago !

Loved him, I know someone who visited the old training ground at Harlington, said Wisey went out of his way to make them welcome etc.

I was at the San Siro that night as well RS. The "Spectaculo" that the Milan ultras put on for the return of Marcel Desailly was just that ........ spectacular. Other memories of that night, remember watching him fly down the left wing and thinking that Shevchenko was actually quicker than me in my car,  and of course the "f**kin great goal". Glorious night.

Hi. Yeah, I'd forgotten that..Desailly ran to their fans before kick off  to acknowledge their display for him.

The banner read " Marcel forever in our hearts".. apparently.

I recall him putting his own hand over his heart.

We had seats onthe halfway line, got a load of sh*t lobbed at us from the tier above when we scored.
