Stop it Bob. Teams will always try and stop the other team playing. This isn't new.

We get around that by moving the ball faster, with more creativity, more attacking intent, and stopping the slow and stagnant, sideways and backwards football.

For 75mins today we played with the handbrake on. We didn't win, because Maresca allowed them to play slow and in a risk averse manner....

Mate, I told you . Fire up your hate machine for Gittens

Maybe I am right after all. 😂😂

Why this sudden drop of performance after cwc n friendly? Because PL team defend differently. It is that simple.

Blocked the middle, force Chelsea wide and we can't do anything. We sold our best solution last season which is Madueke. Neto n Sancho and now looks like gittens are simply not good enough to do this.

If our solution this season is Estevao then we are just being stupid. It is not a good idea for a skinny 18 year old to play heavy minutes in PL.

Maresca played completely differently

I suspect you meant nous, but I agree with your post.

We won’t go down with Maresca, and he’s done a better job than his last few predecessors, but until we find a better coach, we’re not going much further, domestically at least. Mad we’re world champions but look absolutely clueless at home to a mid table English club.

Spot on.

lol - yeah wrong word.

I think the biggest concern is how slow and heavy legged we looked out there. Is it due to the short holidays or it's just one of those days, I don't know. We need to raise our fitness levels sharpish because watching Pool, City, Arse and MU so far makes us look shockingly poor.

I really don't like that a few of the new players are getting stick. It isn't their fault that their manager decided to play them in a role that is completely foreign to them. What other manager does this? Sign two wingers and puts them up against 2 defenders, isolate them, give them no players that overlap? What manager signs a new striker that is good with linking up and movement and gets no teammates next to him and has him surrounded by defenders?

Deluded as always

What on earth has be based that on. Did Henderson have to pull off a single save of any real note.

Surely he is not using the fact that we were unable to shoot at the goal and keep the ball lower than Row Z, as any form of basis to stake a claim that we deserved the win.

Got away with that thanks to a freak law no one knew about. Otherwise that would’ve been an embarrassing defeat.

Doesn’t bode well for teams that come and play a low block which, let’s face it, is most of the Premier League. Don’t think their keeper had a single save to make in 90 minutes. All our transfer activity was designed to overcome that. So nothing’s changed then.

Would like to see a new centre back, new keeper. But more likely have to settle for Symons and Garnacho. Be interesting if Jackson is still here end of the window. Didn’t see much from Pedro to suggest he’s going to be the main man upfront.

To be fair we had 9 blocked shots which are essentially defensive saves. It was that sort of game

I thought we were very lucky not to lose. That was a hell of a break we got from VAR.

From a law that's apparently been in place since 2019 but until today I had never even heard of, let alone seen applied in the last 6 years.

Now given the fact I'm a slow witted old man who's memory is definately in decline I thought I would check with one of my Sons. Not only has he been coaching his local junior side for several years, he's done the courses, sat the exams and actually got official Uefa qualifications. He's never heard of that 1 metre law either until today.

To be fair, how often do you see opposition players get into the home wall. Usually they stand in front.

Disappointing performance and not a great watch but fair play to Palace. They did their homework and thwarted our main threats as well as looking dangerous on the break.

Thought Caicedo, Trev and Acheampong were the pick of our players. I know Acheampomg made a couple of errors which could have been costly, but I like the way he carried the ball at times and he made some great challenges.

We were unfortunate that our two best chances fell to Trev and Santos - otherwise we could have nicked it, but as we were rather fortunate on their disallowed goal, think a draw was a fair result.

We need a much better performance on Friday and batter West Ham.

I've seen it in practically every game I've watched for many years and even if not in the actual wall they are rarely, if ever 1 metre away from a wall of 3 or more defending players which apparently is the law.

Today is the first time I've ever seen that law applied and a ref actually marking that line, it happened again later in the Man Utd v Arsenal game.

Would have been nice to start with a win and be up there with the teams we are aiming to be amongst this season, but that palace side will give a lot of teams problems this season if they can keep the side together, a shame not to win but confident we will be right up there by the end of the season

I've seen it enforced a few times in recent years, but it's rare. It's rare because when it was introduced, players stopped making contact with the wall. Usually refs don't punish when there is contact between players, but the Palace players pushed our players in the wall. I don't think we were lucky in that instance, it was a foul.

Players at this level really need to put the ball in the back of the net. That Andrey miss is unacceptable, esp considering he managed to hit row Z all by himself.

Maresca wasn't hired as a top manager, so I'm afraid we are expecting something he can't yet deliver.

Santos miss was frustrating, but misses like this happen in most games. Even Liverpool and City had a few of those. The reason why it sticks out so often with us is because it's often the only real good chance we get all game.

No argument that the team needs to perform better at home -- pressure higher and be more aggressive will naturally produce more chances.

However, I did expect that our start would be a bit more difficult given the short preseason as well as the short rest since the WCC win.
There is also the important point that we don't know what was asked of the players. Perhaps Maresca's idea was to press high and the players were unable to execute for whatever reason. It's hard to know from the outside.

Clean sheet, 2019 rule change benefited us today , a match that would of hurt more to lose

One game in, 2 points of top or 1 above relegation depending upon your mood !

Palace are a good team now w a superior manager to lot clubs , 3 more derbies in a row upcoming , pikeys next then Fulham then Brentford all similar matches teams looking to low block then counter

The more I think about today, the more frustrated I get. Different feeling had we got a point away from home. City, Arsenal and Liverpool (maybe even Utd or Spurs to a lesser extent), get a late winner, to send the home crowd leaving happy with 3 points.
