Could this be our most exciting squad ever?

Featured Replies

Saw this on twitter earlier. Have to say its an interesting read. I agree with a lot of points, however I'm not sure I agree if this current squad is our most exciting ever. I think its too early to see really, we'll have to wait until the end of the season and see how we do. Given the start we've made to the season though, and some of the brilliant slick football we've already played I can see how this squad can become our most exciting.

Not for me, 97/98 squad was more exciting for me as there were players in it I never thought I would ever see the likes of in Chelsea shirts. Vialli, Gullit, Hughes, Zola, RDM, these were a calibre of player I had never seen in a Chelsea squad.

Perhaps, but also perhaps not. We have a mix of youth and veterans but some areas of the squad still have huge question marks. An amazing young mix, some proven, heart and soul type vets and some players that have red flags galore.

We're not there yet to say this squad is 100% the best we've had.

Is this an Americans sport saying, I`ve never heard it before.

To me a red flag is something to do with safety at a beach or the Labour party.

Anyway, I'm with dkw and Sydney. That Vialli team was fantastic to watch. Really gung ho attitude and some of the finest players of their generation plying their trade with us whilst they still very much had it.

But no doubt, this current squad could surpass them, in time.

I'm not sure where i heard it. A saying I have used since i was knee high to a grasshopper.

Vialli inhereted a very good squad but it wasn't until Jose came along that Chelsea, for the first time, fulfilled their promise. Some things took longer (CL win).

Now we have the blend and potential to possibly outstrip earlier achievements, but not before the new players are shown to have the resilience and ability to overcome setbacks and the endurance required for long ardous campaigns.

Yep, too early yet, question marks arise and will become clearer once we have faced sterner tests and matured as a squad. Initially it starts with Spuds, Utd, City, Juventus (again), Shaktar and inbetweeners such as Fulham West Ham and Everton, etc. We'll have a clearer idea soon enough...

By Christmas we will know if the lads are ready.

At the moment its looking pretty good and we are playing some of the best football I have seen us play, certainly

Curtois(spelling?)

Kane Luiz Cahill Bertrand

Josh Ramires

Oscar Mata Hazard

Lukaku.................. This future sounds bright. (piazon de bryune etc... just made a random line-up, we have to many talented players)

BONETTI..WEBB.,McCREADY..HOLLINS

DEMPSEY..HARRIS..COOKE...HUDSON...

OSGOOD...HUTCHINSON..HOUSEMAN..

BOYLE..MULLIGAN..TAMBLING...BIRCHINALL..WELLER

YOU WONT EVER GET BETTER

Yeah I felt the same at the time, then I felt the same in 2003-2004 when Roman turned up with a bit of a wedge in his pocket, but I have to say that at the moment I am just as excited as either of those occasions, if not a little more, in fact I probably have more reason to be excited this time around as we have purchased the next generation of players that will make their name with us and not with another club before us.

For me Kane is far behind Dave in the right back spot and Lukaku still has a bit to prove. But other than that looking good.

I dunno, you'd have to go a long way to beat the likes of Jokanovic, Stanic, Melchiot, Babyaro, etc... that we had in 01/02

What really excites me about the current team is that we have a player that I really think will go on to win world player of the year. Oscar. And what's even more exciting is that he's just another player for us, not a million miles better than those around him!

My god, yes this team is exciting.

i think hazard will give him a run for his money

Both are potential future legends, although Oscar seems to have something magical about him, possibly more magical than Hazard!

Oscar more than Hazard for me.Hazard almost seems like he's using us as a stepping stone for real madrid.Oscar on the other hand seems as if he wants to become a legend here which he is well capable of

I would agree with this, but it is an age thing, Mike pointing out the earlier golden era I was just too young... but to see these players at Chelsea after the 70's and 80's was just amazing.

I think the other time for me but unfortunately turned out to be the beginning of the end of Jose was when we won the league by record points playing some amazing football then we added Ballack and Sheva at the time arguably in the world top ten players... I thought we would win the lot !

This year I am loving the start wouldn’t say I am excited more intrigued of where we will go.. I feel more relaxed about achievements now we won the lot

Agree Dow that this was a great team but appart from RDM the others were great players who come when maybe their best days were behind them although still great when they came. Today's team I feel are players at the start of greatness. I think we'll have to give it a year or so to see if they succeed.

Agree with Barn about Oscar. I think he is the real diamond in the pack.

There is no doubt this could be the most exciting team in Chelsea's history. It is difficult to compare different generations as the game has changed so much over the years. However, we have a long way to go to match Vialli's team of the late 90's for which I have a special affection. I do believe the present combination of Mata, Hazard and Oscar has tremendous potential and if Neymar is added to the mix we will be well on our way to becoming a major force in European football.
