August 24, 201411 yr "Peanuts! Peanuts! Roasted Peanuts!" 20p for a paper bag. They were the days![/quote Percy Dalton's.
August 26, 201411 yr And suddenly the Aldershot Town pitch donation makes perfect sense. "It's our grass - we can play on it whenever we want". Maybe the club will test the CPO's ownership in court and use this to their advantage.....
August 27, 201411 yr It sounds like that the issue of standing is being pushed by the government with the lib dems now backing sage standing areas. If that safe standing areas did happen, that would make a hige difference? The club would be able to fit more in and still stay at the Bridge. Unfortunately over clubs would also be to do the same. The irony is its as much about getting them out as getting them in. I think I am right in saying that to get a stadium up to about 55k we need an extra 51 metres of clear exit routes from the stadium itself I was looking again on Saturday and to my very untrained eye it looks to me the key will be exits to the rear of the Matthew Harding . One option has to be the demolition of the Chelsea Club to gain access possibly across to Brompton Park Cres & Seagrave Road or along the route of the railway line and into Fulham Broadwey Centre.
August 27, 201411 yr I would certainly love to see more seating available to both improve ease of getting tickets to big matches and of course improve revenue for FFP reasons. But as a guy in the Boston area I've lived the 'replace' or 'invest in the old place' debate for many years due to my city's baseball stadium for the Red Sox, Fenway Park (1912). There are many parallels... and the owners of the sox (owners of the scousers, BTW) kept the cherished old place and no one has looked back. I certainly hope the fate of the bridge is the same, improvement, enlargement but ultimately not replacement. I attended my first match there last Spring and it was magical. I've been to the etihad, and to wembley. And damn the new wembley is a cool place, but you know I like Stamford Bridge the best of the lot (etihad completely sucks and is a boring utilitarian charmless place IMO). Stamford Bridge isn't at a fenway park level for me, but it's a place with a soul. Just my 2 cents.
August 27, 201411 yr I love Fenway and as a Yankees fan think what they did was awesome compared to us. We knocked down the House that Ruth Built for some concrete gray and navy blue sterile environment that simply caters to the wealthy. Before a fan could go down to the field prior to games. Not anymore though because the Yankees don't want to pass off the people who paid ridiculous money to let's face it a subpar team. Love to see Chelsea build Stamford Bridge larger to house more people but from what I understand it is posh real estate in Chelsea and surely they will have their say. Fenway is no where near in that type of neighborhood. Plus Boston has their beloved Sox, the only Baseball team in the city or for miles. City and people are more receptive to that and want the history of Fenway to stay.
August 31, 201411 yr I just wish we would find some kind of solution to the problem, I feel like we could well get left behind on the stadium capacity if we are not careful. I believe the spuds are going to be upgrading WHL, (who would want to go there?) We are one of the biggest clubs in Europe, we need to capitalise on that through the use of increased stadium attendance, sooner rather than later. I know the outlay has to be taken into account but even so we need to keep up with rival clubs.
September 1, 201411 yr I love the fact that we play in such a nice part of London, but in some ways that very fact makes it that much harder to find a suitable site to move to (if we had to). Areas like Seven Sisters etc are such sh*tholes that it's not difficult to find a spot for a stadium.
September 17, 201411 yr Here's a way to fit more people in Stamford Bridge. Everyone only thinks of housing fans to the side of the pitch ie the stands. Why not utilise the space above the pitch- what you do is have a system of suspended wires, lets say 40 yards up. Hanging upside down from these wires are Chelsea fans, packed shoulder to shoulder, like a load of bats, looking down on the match below. They might find it a pain in the arse getting a beer at half time, and the blood will no doubt rush to their head after 90 minutes of being suspended upside down, but if it means we can squeeze a few more thousand in its a price worth paying
September 17, 201411 yr Or do a swap with with West Brompton boneyard next door. Dig up all the stiffs, re- bury them at SB, and we build a new stadium on their land 50 yards away. Ps you may or may not know that that graveyard is a favourite destination for the, Earls Court cruising community shall we say. Go to the top of the East Stand during night games, and look out that long window, and you can see them going at it on top of the tombstones. Nice
September 17, 201411 yr I presume we cannot increase capacity like they did at the Stade de France by digging down?
September 17, 201411 yr I thought the problem with increasing our size wasn't how we would do it, I thought it was getting the fans in and out of the stadium safely due to our location?
September 17, 201411 yr I thought the problem with increasing our size wasn't how we would do it, I thought it was getting the fans in and out of the stadium safely due to our location? Yes, because currently fans can only exit from one side of the ground and I think we're at our limit for that. We'd have to find an alternative exit. In Bates' time there was talk of building a bridge to West Brompton.
September 17, 201411 yr arsenal`s stadium has train tracks on two sides and only one street to spill out to like us so if they can do it why not us
September 17, 201411 yr What's happening with BBC television centre in Shepherds Bush, which we were rumoured to be taking an interest in? Trouble is any stadium design would have to incorporate the Blue Peter garden
September 23, 201411 yr With the Anfield and White Hart expansions underway Chelsea really need to kick this into gear
September 23, 201411 yr With the Anfield and White Hart expansions underway Chelsea really need to kick this into gear + Everton
September 23, 201411 yr There is a lovely site for a football ground just off the M1 at Hemel Hempstead and its only 5 minutes walk from my house.Seriously though i hope we can develop Stamford Bridge as i love drinking in the Kings Road.
September 24, 201411 yr + Everton This season even more than any other, it really is a bun fight for home tickets, firstly all games must be done on loyalty points. The easiest time I have had to get home premier tickets so far this season was the Arsenal game as it was on loyalty points. The other games Leicester, swansea, villa, and Qpr have been a struggle and all sold out by about 10am on the first day of sale. The call for a larger ground or better still an expanded bridge will increase over the next few years. Our support started to increase after the 1997 cup win. My two boys were only 3 and 1 at the time but over the next few years they started to go to boys football clubs and you could see the chelsea replica kits everywhere!! Down in West Sussex they were by far the most popular with United shirts. Now those little lads are nearly 21 and 18 and go with their mates to the bridge. So the match day crowd will increase as those lads who grew up with their chelsea kits back in the late 90's and early 2000's start going to games as they become young men. I am not suggesting they all will, as many a young lad will drift away from football, but if only a small percentage decide to start going then that will increase the crowd. Hence what we are seeing this season. The reason Arsenal and Liverpool for instance need or needed bigger grounds was because of the success they had previous to Chelsea success back in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Look at Chelsea and our huge travelling support back in the 80s, many of those lads who went, would of been young boys in the late 60s early 70s when we had our success then.( always remember my first goalkeeping gloves with B for Bonetti sewn on the top) Then by the 80s would of been late teens, or in their 20s. So I do think the need for a larger capacity is growing rapidly. Edited September 24, 201411 yr by chi blue
September 28, 201411 yr Pinched from The Sunday Times. Chelsea are allegedly in negotiations with the RFU to play at Twickenham for a year. CHELSEA are considering playing for a season at Twickenham, the home of English rugby union, while their Stamford Bridge stadium is redeveloped, in a bid to take its capacity from 41,800 to 60,000. The Rugby Football Union confirmed that initial talks had taken place, though they are at a very early stage. The conversations indicate that Chelsea, owned by Roman Abramovich, have abandoned a long-held dream of building a new London stadium in favour of redeveloping their current home. Football has never been played at Twickenham, which has a capacity of 82,000, but the stadium has allowed rugby league on its hallowed turf and hosted rock concerts. The RFU said last night: “We are regularly contacted by a variety of organisations, within and outside sport, on a wide range of opportunities concerning the use of what we believe is a world-class stadium. We have had an enquiry from Chelsea FC but have not had any discussions of any substance. While we don’t comment on any specific confidential conversations, each request is taken on its merit, assessing a variety of factors, such as the effect on the pitch, availability, transport and local considerations and other important implications.” If Chelsea were to play at Twickenham for a season, it could not be before 2016-17 as the southwest London stadium hosts the Rugby World Cup next season. The FA hoped to include Twickenham in its bid for the 2018 football World Cup but the RFU declined to become involved. Chelsea announced earlier this year plans to redevelop Stamford Bridge. A study commissioned by Abramovich is looking at ways in which the club could reach a capacity of 60,000, which would help them meet Financial Fair Play guidelines. By acquiring land neighbouring Stamford Bridge, the club are exploring their options. They have insisted that they will keep supporters informed and are mindful of the emotions surrounding stadium issues. A Chelsea spokesman said: “We’re investigating different scenarios as part of the consultation process we started earlier this year, but have had no discussions of substance so far.” Rivals Tottenham are currently trying to negotiate the sensitivities of their fans as they plan to move from White Hart Lane while it is redeveloped. With West Ham set to move to the Olympic stadium in 2016, London’s current No1 club could be left playing in only the capital’s fifth biggest football arena unless Stamford Bridge is redeveloped.
September 28, 201411 yr 82000 for a season would be brilliant! And it's where I'm from so I'm probably biased when I say I'd love to play at Twickenham. Not permanently though. I want us to stay at the Bridge.
September 28, 201411 yr I know it's early days. But that sounds like it has wheels and is extremely exciting! !
September 28, 201411 yr Certainly exciting be great if the club done some sort of cheap to tickets especially for families and youths try get back the generations of fans we priced out and with a huge stadium like that it might happen. I know its only a year but we could give youth a chance to watch us cheaply they might get hooked. We have quite an old fan bass I reckon
