Posted May 12, 201312 yr Seeming as Falcao is no longer available, could we do much worse than Christian Benteke? Powerful, fast, good finisher, young, seems like he would fit into our set-up very well. Fourth top scorer in the Premiership this year despite playing for a relegation battling side, and would probably come at a relatively cheap price.
May 12, 201312 yr Too much of a gamble. He is still too inexperienced in this league to pin a title push on. Lukaku would be a preferred option seeing as we already own him.

We need someone who will put the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis. Benteke is much more of a natural finisher than Lukaku.
May 12, 201312 yr For real? now every player that is gonna give a good season should be here? common dude.
May 12, 201312 yr We brought drogba of the back of a good season. Any way, the sooner you do it the cheaper he comes the less the risk
May 12, 201312 yr What's the point of signing Benteke when we have Lukaku? its like buying the same player but one 3 years older.

I wouldn't say the Falcao deal is dead, i just can't see him going to Monaco.
May 12, 201312 yr If we are go to buy a striker it needs to be a proven goalscorer at all levels. This would just be another Ba. We need better and lets get rid of Torres first before bringing in any more back up strikers

Only a few goals between them in the league and I believe Benteke has started a fair few more games. Plus Lukaku has one of the best goals to minutes played ratios in the league. May 12, 201312 yr No just no! Strikers that play well elsewhere can't do it at Chelsea. Look at Ba, Sturridge, Torres, Shevchenko et al We need someone right out of the top drawer. That's why those who expect Lukaku to lead Chelsea's attack next season and be the next Drogba, are deluded.

May 13, 201312 yr Makes me think we should never have get rid of Sturridge.. He's good and strong but I think it's more likely he will go the spuds.
May 13, 201312 yr Benteke is obviously a very good player but with Spurs reportedly offering around 20m for him, I'm not sure that's a bidding war we want to get into if the rumours are that Lewandowski is available around the same price. I am big fan of buying players within the league; if you look at all the recently successful clubs from Juve to Bayern to Barca to Man U, they all have a strong ethic of seeking out and buying the best in the league. But, there is a clear gap in class and experience between Lewandowski and Benteke at the moment and if both are available for a similar price we'd be fools not to go for the finished article. Lewandowski's proved himself in the Champions League and also at a top sides, the dynamics of which are very different to Benteke's previous clubs. Obviously both players come with some risk but if I were to be on which striker would hit the ground running from day 1, i'd have my money on Lewandowski. Anothing thing: I don't rate Lukaku as highly as most people on here do, but I do think he is worth the gamble as a member of the first-team squad. I don't think he is near Benteke's class yet but in terms of playing style he offers a lot of the same attributes and a decent goalscoring record. I think we need to start with 2.5 strikers going into the season. My picks would be Lewandowski, Lukaku and Schurrle (assuming he is a done deal); all three players are very capable of netting 10-15 goals in the league, and offering very different attributes. Lewandowski, as the starter, is very similar to van Persie, a poacher who is great at also assisting the players around him. Lukaku brings physicality and an aerial threat who has proven himself adept at changing games off the bench (similar to how Dzeko was played at City), and Schurrle brings Bale-esque raw speed and the ability to score from nothing.Given the above, although I think Benteke is a fine player, he doesn't offer enough variety that is crucial when you have 3 players for 1 position. May 13, 201312 yr As with every player who comes to the prem and has a good first season I would prefer to wait until the end of next season to see just how good he is.
May 13, 201312 yr He strikes me as a one-season wonder. I don't think he'll reproduce this amount of goals again next year.
May 13, 201312 yr As with every player who comes to the prem and has a good first season I would prefer to wait until the end of next season to see just how good he is. Then he ll have 10 choices of teams that want him and the price doubles.......Take a chance now
May 13, 201312 yr Then he ll have 10 choices of teams that want him and the price doubles.......Take a chance now if were gonna be taking chances, id rather we take a chance on lukaku
May 13, 201312 yr I'm not sure that he is a one season wonder though, i mean he is from Belgium after all.
May 13, 201312 yr It really does get a bit wearing, we play someone, one of their players either has a halfway decent match, or is having a decent season and someone comes in here and starts a thread about that player and should we buy him? OR, not even someone we are playing, somebody suggested we buy that Macmammanamanamanam character from Wigan, because he did a mazy little dribble in the cup final. But there are many many examples of that in this forum. FFS, it happens nearly every time an opponent or another team's player has anything above an average performance. That is the definition of spoilt-brat supporters, and is partly why we get sneered at by fans of other teams.
