Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says his club have moved on from the exit of Frank Lampard by signing Cesc Fabregas.

Lampard, 36, left in the summer at the end of his contract before the Blues signed midfielder Fabregas, 27, from Barcelona as his replacement.

"Frank is the history of the club, history nobody can forget," said Mourinho.

"Fabregas is the future; history is history but the future is more important at the moment."

Lampard signed for Major League Soccer side New York City in the summer but returned to the Premier League by signing for Chelsea's rivals Manchester City on loan until January.

He spent 13 years at Stamford Bridge and is the club's all-time leading scorer with 211 goals but could face Chelsea when City play them in the top flight on 21 September.

Mourinho added: "My opinion, and the opinion of my players, is that Fabregas is the right player to occupy that central position in midfield."

I have not followed every game of pre-season, but that is a peach of a goal!

Its funny how you don't appreciate players who play for other teams. I was thought Fabregas was good and not great, but watching him in pre-season he looks immense. I think we wouldve scored alot more goals last season with the same strikers and Cesc in the team. I think he's going to be our best player this season

I always thought he was a great player and appreciated him more once he moved to barca.

He might not have lived up to their ridiculous high standards but he was still smashing in a respectable number of goals and assists remember.

I agree that he will be our best player this season, he's stood out so far in pre season.

Yeah, I think we would have lost points here if we didn't have him. Amazing performance. It's not even just the assists: he linked up our entire play, controlling and directing it. Superb vision.

I was a bit worried about him defensively, but he actually did a few successful tackles and interceptions too, so an all-round brilliant performance.
