Willian

I think it's a chance that anyone other than Fernando Torres would have scored from.

Surely that's just "a chance".

This reminds me of a row on here a couple of years ago - it was due to Malouda being streets ahead at the top of the 'chances created' list (ahead of the likes of Silva, Nasri, Fabregas, etc.) at the same time as receiving a lot of criticism on the forum for being too selfish.

A clear chance is a free strike at goal in the box when you're facing it. Usually only the keeper can stop it.

Passing it to a marked player so he has to beat the defender isn't a clear chance, nor is laying the ball off for Lampard to have a go outside the box.

Willian is not great at crossing and almost never plays defence splitting passes so I doubt he's created many clear chances.

What does ' chance created' mean anyway? Overtime a player attempt a pass or cross to a team mate in the box, thats a chance? He's playing because of his work rate, not creativity or his goal scoring ability. He's a rich man's Dirk Kyet, and I don't mean it as a criticism. You need a player like that in the team, but not more than 1 in the attacking midfielders.

Willian > that Spanish bloke.

Biased because of my meeting him? Not at all.

Sorry Charles i haven't read through this entire thread but am wondering what you are referring to just because I'm nosey

Did you meet Willian or the Spanish bloke?

I like hearing about supporters meeting players and what the players are like in real life. Thats the only reason I'm asking

I love the fact that when stat's don't support an argument they don't mean an awful lot.

I said it earlier and it needs repeating... Look at the company he's in on the list!! We are not talking about the tom cleverly of this world who will lay a square pass allowing for a shot from 30 yards (oh and by the way, many of the same people that are discrediting this stat are happy to give mata an assist for goals such as the square pass 30 yards out to Ashley young.

Every one on that list could be classed as a creative player. Willian's ability to win the ball and break at speed (something he did two times against dippers) creates openings, unfortunately, often the player on the end of it doesn't finish it.

Now, that's not to say I'm blind to willian. because a lot of the time he has a couple of choices and for me he has picked the wrong one, should the chance been put away, yes, but if I have the choice of passing to Rami, or any of our other attacking players I pick the others. Rami is always there though...

In the below video see around the 3 minute mark for example of what I mean...

I think it simply boils down to nobody in the attacking band besides Hazard and Eto (arguable) being anywhere near clinical. Mourinho has spoken of his frustrations at the little things that seem to go wrong at the end of a move. A wrong choice, poor movement, poor finish etc. All have been guilty, even Hazard, but this is not strange given the quality and level of experience of our options. It would naturally improve even without new signings, but add a quality finisher or two and we'll be dynamite next season.

Just remember every team needs a scapegoat. I'm not saying Willian is in that bracket but people rarely if ever change their minds about a player. I thought he had an excellent season and hope he's not too tired after the World Cup. The transfer fee is an irrelevancy.

I'd like to see Willian tried in a holding midfield role. He did this a lot for Shaktar and his work rate + vision was really accentuated. It will also give him more opportunity to make late runs. His defensive ability is more than enough to make him an asset there.

I assume anything that would count as an assist had the receiver scored.

That's a bit vague though isn't it.

Does the "chance" have to have lead to a shot, a shot on target, the opportunity to shoot?

Just sounds like a nothing stat to me.

It is. You could make a simple 5 yard pass and it could count as a chance created.

Pretty sure we went through this 10 odd pages back, and the other "top chance creators" were the likes of Ozil, Silva, Nasri, Hazard, Suarez and Rooney, or something along those lines.

Judging by the company he is in it's hardly meaningless.

It doesn't support the general feeling so it must be meaningless. Not to be "that guy" but if mata topped this list it would suddenly mean something.

And so it should if it results in a chance being created. Or are you saying otherwise?

If a player makes a simple 5 yard pass and the guy he passes to scores does that not count as an assist either in your world then?
