With John Terry's contract winding down in the summer, we're going to be seeing quite a lot of talk about him either signing a new deal or going elsewhere. There aren't really many other options. Of course, since Terry gets paid so much money -- his wages are in the vicinity of £165,000 per week -- there are pretty significant barriers to him signing a new deal or going elsewhere. In the Financial Fair Play Era of Glorious Responsibility, there aren't going to be too many teams willing to pay through the nose for an elderly centre half, no matter what his qualities.

One of the clubs that has been linked to the skipper is Galatasaray, who appear to be collecting elderly, expensive players. We all know Didier Drogba, for example, and Wesley Sneijder's there as well. Why not add Terry to that mix if Chelsea don't agree to hand out a new deal? It wasn't the most plausible of rumours, but hey, it was plausible enough. Until, of course, Galatasaray were asked about it:

John Terry is a great player however, our transfer priority is not to sign a centre-back. Our main goal is to target younger players and reduce the average age of the team. Terry is definitely not in any of our plans, neither
or the board have shown any interest and no enquiries have been made.

The club aims to sign Turkish players during the transfer window, all these rumours do is demotivate our defenders. I'm going to say it again and make it very clear, we are not interested in Terry

My guess (and I'm a cynic) is that Terry and Chelsea are talking about a new deal, and his representatives want as much leverage as they can drum up. If other clubs are interested in signing Terry for more than the Blues are willing to pay, their position is much stronger, but there simply won't be that many sides in for his services. And so a wide net is cast in hopes that they'll find a bidder. It's all part of the game, but in this case, Galatasaray aren't interested in playing.

In light of this, what do you all think of the idea of giving JT a new contract? (I am aware that this is quite an early point at which to answer the question)

Personally I think we should be doing everything we can to keep him at the club, without him we suffer on the pitch and in the dressing room. This season he has been our best defender by miles (arguably our best player outright) and I think he represents something more to the club and the fans than just a brilliant centre back. If this season does serve as a swan song for Lampard and Cole then there is also some poignancy (in my opinion at least) in him being the last remaining outfield member of our 2004/05 vintage.

Sign him up!

He's showing this season he is still good enough and Luiz indifferent form this year makes it all the more vital to retain him in my opinion.

He's worth at least another year and even if he starts to get reduced playing time he is still a quality defender.

He has never had much pace so it's not like slowing down is an issue.

He has shown no evidence of age hindering his performances so it's very much a no-brainer for me. He's still one of the best defenders around and tends to raise the game of whoever is playing next to him. It's also a massive benefit to the team to have somebody with his leadership qualities and experience on the pitch, especially considering the relative youth of the majority of our players.

I also suspect he's a one club man so would be shocked if he ended up playing for anybody else.

although most of us want to see jt  get another contract i dont think its going to happen for some odd reason

I dont think its likely at all that he wont get a new contract

It seems to me Jose doesnt particularly rate neither Luiz or Cahill. Terry leaving would leave us 2 CBs short, at least in Joses eyes

He is still 31 hardly old for a defender and he is currently in form and should get a new contract. He is also a fan favourite and a club legend it's not like he is sh*t now and that the contract is charity or something.

He is still 31 hardly old for a defender

He turns 33 next month.

A new 12 month deal at the end of this season and he would finish the following season 34 years old, that's around the age a lot of players start to get moved on at most clubs.

Too early to say for me, harder tests await and we aren't even half way through the season yet. He'll probably still get it though because Jose seems to trust him.

Without a doubt.Chelsea through and through and has been very good this season. You have to keep performing at a high level to earn a contract,JT has.Two years at least and then a position as a coach hopefully. What an on pitch example for our young up and coming defenders.JT and Frank have become part of the furniture and long may it continue.

Haha f**k me my math is crap.Still a new one year deal wouldn't be a disaster? and to extend it if he keeps up the good work.

Was going to laugh in Davey's face and list a load of better defenders in the league, but I can't think of one.

In fact the closest is probably Ivanovic.

Luiz has been very inconsistent this season, utterly sh*te on a few occasions, and you always feel Cahill has a mistake in him. Terry has been solid at the very least, excellent at times.

Terry will stay, because he's world class.

either a one year deal or a two year deal on reduced wages?  Either way, he is a leader, and at times like this when we have a lot of talent, but no one really taking the reigns of leading them other than JT, I think that is something immeasurable.

My only concern is the strength of his back.  He has had to sit out a bit because of it in the past, and being someone with a bad back myself, I know how debilitating it canbe.

He should get a new deal hes been very much back to near his best

Just think if he was still playing for England they might stand a chance in Brazil

Looking hopeful. It seems José actually rates him.

Let's not forget what the Observer wrote about JT and José back in 2007:

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2007/sep/23/newsstory.chelsea

Note that they retract the content of the article at the top:

In this article we did not intend to adopt any allegation that John Terry was a 'turncoat' or 'disloyal' or that he had played any intentional part in the departure of Jose Mourinho from Chelsea Football Club. We accept his assurance that he did not. We also accept that our original headline, 'Turncoat' Terry, might have caused confusion and apologise if any contrary impression was given.

One of the worst examples of press fabrication that ever made it in to print. I'd rank it up there with the bollocks that was written about JT's supposed 'mutiny' against Capello in the 2010 world cup, which was of course utterly disproved when Capello re-instated him as captain as soon as the whole Wayne Bridge fabrication had been exposed
