The John Terry Appreciation Thread

60k for a backup role is a good enough deal. if i'm not mistaken Azpi's salary is not far from that number

Sounds like a very reasonable offer if the reports are correct (a major if). I'll be disappointed in JT if he thinks this is below him.

I'm not sure whether any of this report is credible but it suggests JT would be turning down millions to stay with us in London.

Who knows how comfortable JT is financially? You would suspect he is VERY comfortable and some but then footballers (and their wives) do lead very high-cost lifestyles.

For me personally, I couldn't face living in China, whatever the rewards and although I don't know JT, I don't think I could see him in China. So unless he's been a bit too extravagant with his lifestyle and is down to his last few million, I can see him staying.

I don't think JT would be living the Chinese lifestyle that you or I would be - China is a fantastic place if you have plenty of money... most places are!

Still I'd rather it be the US than China.

The crowds and stadiums in China are in large a bit 'meh'.

I saw Ramires score a goal and it looked like he was playing down the local park with jumpers for goalposts

Well apparently he made a profit of 10 mill when he sold his house in 2014

Not to be sniffed at!

I played football with a guy who was doing some work for JT on that house (said he would get my son a signed photo but it never materialised!). When he then decided to sell it the rumours were he needed to sell to pay off debts but that's probably just tabloid talk.

Summary: He can't be short of a few bob.

You would think he'd have a fair bit by now.

He earns or did earn over £8 million a season before the various bonuses and sponsorships.

I can't see it being money driven, then again who knows.

Most of these guys earn an absolute fortune, but many also live well beyond their means with huge mortgages on X number of mansions, flashy cars and a constantly updated fashion wardrobe.

I remember seeing an article a few years ago about just how many footballers go bankrupt 5-10 years after they hang up the boots as they are so used to a certain lifestyle !

I am sure JT wont be going hungry or cold in winter, but I cant understand why some of these guys choose to gamble etc when already multi millionaires.

Hopefully JT is smart enough not to fall into these traps.

Robbie Fowler, despite being a scouse ballbag, really made some good decisions with his money.

Keith Gillespie on the other hand....

Gazza also. Although granted he had his demons which played the biggest part.

We do have to remember these guys might never work again after they are 37 odd so need to get the coffers packed as much as they can before hand.

With Terry though you can imagine he would go into another role like TV or coaching which would not be paying peanuts either.

I can't see JT going into the media, everyone outside of Chelsea hates him, there would be backlash if any TV channel hired him on. He mentioned years ago that he wanted to manage Chelsea one day, I think that's where he will go - into management. Though again, he is so hated still that most clubs would probably avoid him, so he may have to work his way up through our youth teams or something for a while.

Yeah fowler owns loads of properties in Liverpool doesn't he?

I think jt is at a status where he will still be able to earn big money after he retires through coaching or media opportunities.

Id imagine he could 'write' a few very profitable books as well.

If the details being reported are correct, I'd be disappointed if he didn't sign tbh, what more could he realistically expect, he has missed a fair bit of this season through injury, and the club need to free up some money to push the team back into the champions league.

Really wish lamps was offered a similar deal.

Lampard and Terry need to be involved with coaching the next generation. Too many young players come through and think they've made it before they've achieved anything (RLC, McEachran, etc...). They need to instill a work ethic in them.

If footballers go bankrupt especially in today's inflated period then they are absolute idiots. To chase the big money just to make sure is pathetic. Manage your money wisely. With the money they earn they should be able to buy a massive mansion and a couple of super cards without fear of losing it all. Plus those are assets which they can still pocket money from when sold.

I wouldn't call Lampard or Drogba pathetic.

Both went to the US because they could earn far more money than they could here.

Just because your football career ends, it should not mean your working life has to end.

Remember back years ago when most ex-players ended up running a pub or bar of some kind, quite often abroad.

OK tad harsh and not exactly what I mean. What I mean are those players who leave a club that has been loyal to them and whose fans adore them just for money.

I can understand Drogs and Lamps, they are free agents they can go where they want.

I would be dissapointed if JT rejected even a 50K a week contract at Chelsea for a 200K a week contact in China.

You can say it's what anyone would do in another job but it's not. The differences are, you earn so much that you can retire after 20 years of playing and be well off for generations and you have thousands of fans idolising you so much that they will bash the powers that be to sign you on.

I'd be disappointed to but I'd understand to a degree.

We left it till the last minute to offer him a contract, he had to look at other avenues due to not having any security.

It's easy for us to say stay for a fraction of what you could make elsewhere but he has to discuss it with his family and see what suits them. The kind of money on offer in China is the sort that will set your kids, and their kids up for life.

He has plenty as is and no one is saying he is going to go without as he is a millionaire. Hopefully he will choose Chelsea and put off the other moves for another year.

I understand his last minute frustrations I really do so fair enough on that part. But I'm assuming the club wanted to wait for Conte to decide. As much of a legend JT, his power within the dressing room could cause problems with the manager so maybe that was the reason.

As for setting the kids up for life, his time at Chelsea has already set his kids and their kids up for life. Plus he can easily make more money after football.
