Charlie Austin

Jesus there is a name i forgot about. Marcus Stewart. Was at Ipswich wasn't he when they finished 5th?

Sure was. Finished the season with 19 goals.

Just highlighting that one season scoring goal is no guarantee of success.

Michu is another decent example, got 18 league goals in his first season with Swansea, then 2 in his second.

There's also zaki, and ricketts who had a good 1st season. I don't see Austin being any better than someone like bobby zamora. Scores goals but not good enough for a team in the top 5 in the world.

Fifteen million for Charlie Austin seems like decent investment and a good alternative to an injured Costa. Can handle the physical side, will hassle defenders and is a good finisher. We could do a lot worse. Will create more problems for defenders than Remy or Falcao. All I can think is that being English somehow seems to count against him.

Unless we sign Griezmann or Pedro then Austin might be worth considering.

May not be the best out there, but we might need someone. Seems we made a mistake not sending Costa for surgery. We should correct that as soon as we can.

There seems to be conflicting news on whether the injury will be resolved by surgery or not.

Problem is that you cant just operate on a hanstring if theres nothing to operate. Im a physical therapist by trade and Ive seen injuries like this plenty of times. The scans look fine, the player feels fine and when hes going through tests theres no problem. But then he plays and the muscle keeps cramping or just radiates pain. If it was as simple as doing an operation and then be done with it, he would have gotten one ages ago

Hammys are an arse to fix, rest is usually the only thing to do. Unless like my mates it becomes detached and coils up in the leg.....eeuughhh...

Would be a waste of money. Traore can play back up striker if needs must.

But is he good enough? It's like when people said to play Schurrle as a CF, he wasn't good enough.

Austin is a proven goal scorer and like I said I don't think Remy or Falcao will be here next season so he could be our main backup for years to come.

So what is normally the prognosis with those types of injury generally? I'm aware there is a million different outcomes but generally speaking do people eventually overcome the flare ups of pain and discomfort? Please give me a reason to be optimistic about Diego long term, I don't want him to be a one season wonder that we end up unsuccessfully helping to resolve the issue and gets sold two seasons from now.

Like you said, it depends. Theres no way to make an educated guess from the outside. But from my experience, injuries like this when the athlete feels fine and the scans doesnt show any problems but he keeps injuring it and having pain/discomfort you are usually looking at chronic problems. Meaning its not something that will go away and its a matter of when not if it flares up again

Time to get the horse placenta out by the sounds of it then.

So spend what? 20+ million on a 2nd string striker who isn't proven, apart from one season in the EPL, could be a one season wonder, no experience consistently with a top team, may struggle here, not fit our system etc, instead of bringing someone like bamford back or using traore (who played as striker for vitesse) for free? I don't think our board would be very happy with some people here, or maybe they would considering our recent acquisitions. I would rather see how bamford develops next season and see if austin can replicate his form this season than spunk more money o someone who could work out a waste of more money.

It's funny you say that, he went to Eastern Europe for that according to his biography. He didn't really fancy being injected with horse placenta. Player are so spoiled these days....

He is PL proven more so that Traore and as I said Remy & Falcao will most likely be gone next season so we'd be in the market for a striker wen with Bamford anyway. We'll have to agree to disagree but I think signing Austin is a no brainer.

No offence intended to anyone here, but the saying "Why spend X amount on him, we can just use (input youth player name)" is not quite plausible.  Like on another Chelsea forum someone said don't sign Stones, use Clarke-Salter as back up.  I mean, come on. Let's not chuck players in the first team because they played well against an U21 side.  They need to play at a competitive level first and prove they can do it at the level required, like Bamford.

If he doesn't score a single goal for Palace this season, or only scores about 3, would everyone still be calling for him to replace Falcao or Remy next summer if one leaves?

Since when did Remy suddenly become terrible over night? Thought everyone was literally saying a few weeks ago they were happy he was staying and he's a good player. After poor games against Arsemal and Fiorentina he is suddenly gash?
