Third Season Syndrome?

One of Jose's problems is the loss of winners in the dressing room, Drogba and Cech are huge characters to replace, add to this the other serial winners are struggling for form now themselves. The most talented players in the side aren't necessarily the biggest characters and can shrink when the pressures on.

it wouldn't be us that swings the final blow though. if roman and the board don't see improvements then naturally they will get agitated and take it out on jose. at the moment the poor results are also increased by jose's decision making in term of picking personnel.

You know, I was starting to think this too. I get the feeling that Cech and Drogba made huge contributions in the background last season and their loss is being felt.

Undoubtedly, these players have been in the spine of our most successful period as a club, they are enormous characters who have played together under a plethora of managers each having the winning mentality to dig deep when times are tough. Replacing these will be a humongous task for Jose, plenty of players have skill, molding them into a team of winners is hard. I sincerely hope that the club has a plan for JT to stay part of the setup when he eventually hangs his boots up.

I believe complacency is a problem too. We won the league, so weve done it and its hard to put that hunger in the players again.

Aye. We needed to recycle our squad much more this summer to keep our players on their toes.

Asides from Pedro it's just same old same old this season for the rest of the starting 11.

He needs to stop picking players on reputation and look at form more.

He's proven he can do that.. He is also fiercely loyal to players who have served him well, as he should be. It's a balance. But he dropped Cole when it became clear Cole couldn't cut it anymore.

Ivan will be dropped next game, pretty confident of it but hopefully he will be able to find form again.

All those saying thanks Ivan but f**k of should have a look at them selves, essentially telling a player who has been with us 10 years, won everything with us and has put everything in to f**k of???? f**king shambles...

I think there's some complacency, some players just not giving the performances we rightly expect and perhaps a slight edge off our motivation just because we won it last year. I can just imagine that our guys are more keyed up about the CL this time around than the EPL.

I'd love to see Jose drop Ivan, put Dave at RB and give Baba a run at LB - but will he? His loyalty to some players may be really tested soon enough - does Hazard need a reminder that he's not yet the world's best?

Spot on, tired of looking at the over the top Ivan comments, he's been poor, but lets not kick a legend when he's down, it's ridiculous, he's been fantastic for us prior to this season.

Just like that Ivan is probably as disappointed as anyone. Look at him at the end and he's pretty much out on his feet, he's a player used to winning and he's being beaten time and time again. He will be feeling pretty sh*t and asking questions of him self and his career right now

We missed JT on the pitch today, significant I felt.

Look at the current team compared to the back to back title winners and there just aren't as many leaders.

Cech, Terry, Carvalho, Gallas, Makelele, Lampard, Drogba were all huge personalities and leaders.

The likes of Cahill, Matic, Fabregas, Willian, Oscar don't even come close to them.

It's not a third-season syndrome. The tactical (inability to counter-attack, no attacking structure, RB not covered defensively) and squad problems (lack of leadership) have been present for at least two seasons in various forms.

It's just that they've decided to manifest themselves in August instead of November or March, at this stage.

They've been covered ad nauseum in recent days but whenever people brought them up as warning flags in the past, they were dismissed as trolls. Lol.
