Welcome Pato

Zola

by Tim Sturtridge, South American football journalist

?Pato has struggled with injuries since 2010 (hamstrings, thigh strains, muscle pulls), which curtailed his time in Milan. His return to Brazil with Corinthians was not successful with the £11.5m price tag (a massive fee for a Brazilian club to pay) weighing heavily on him.

?The pace, movement and trickery that marked Pato out as a special talent in his early years have declined as injuries have taken their toll. There are parallels with Chelsea striker Radamel Falcao in this respect.

?A positive for Chelsea is that Pato has turned down bigger money in China and at 26 he knows this is his last chance to make an impact in Europe. He will be aiming to reach Brazil's Copa America squad this summer.

have to say i am actually pretty pleased with our business this window,Pato on this price is a good deal IMO,Miazga looks like an amazing prospect who might actually stay and play for us,and the Ramires sale might mean that RLC plays more so all in all a very good window for me

I still think Pato is a gamble and we should have signed one or two big names, Miazga is one for the future, but we need a top draw defender and we really should have signed an attacking midfielder because Oscar doesn't cut it.

Saw a funny tweet stating this is poor from us, to sign Pato when we have Solanke and Abraham...umm, Solanke is on loan and Abraham hasn't kicked a ball yet and has no experience, I would love these stupid neutrals to mind their own business and stop talking nonsense.

That is absolutely hilarious.  A kid who hasn't played at any level besides EDS (kids v kids) instead of Pato.  Where do these people come from?

Reminds me of last summer when someone wanted us to ignore Stones and/or Laporte and play Clarke-Salter. Weirdos

"He was used to playing at Milan as a striker and

we want him to play as a striker as well -- but

maybe in a slightly different style, second or third

to Diego. He must play in that area.

"Recently he played a little bit more as a No. 10

[for Sao Paulo] and he can play on the left or right side of an advanced midfield position." - Guus Hiddink

Will there ever be a day when we actually sign a consistent, non injury prone striker that is not considered to be at the end of his career.

Anyway wish him the best and I hope he can offer something more than Falcao or we are up sh*ts creek without a paddle especially with the CL around the corner.

He's not sure where Pato fits in to the team, that doesn't say much for Harry as a manager, he's a striker Harry you goof, it's not as if we're overstocked with them.

Except he's a left winger, not really a striker. Unless you're Berlusconi. Then he's a striker and please invite me to your next party.

I get that he's not a natural striker, but the point is he's a versatile player who will be utilised as a winger/striker and I'm not sure how Harry can't understand that.

Reasonable signing I think.

1. He has a point to prove.

2. Has CL and European experience.

3. Seems to have played fairly regularly for the last three seasons if the wikipaedia appearance stats are anything to go by (57, 44, 56 appearances in 2013, 2014 and 2015)

4. Even if he does absolutely nothing, he will be a huge improvement on Falcao, as he will be a quarter of the price in wages.

5. World class players are hardly ever available in January, and at a least we haven't paid OTT on someone less than ideal, like we did with Torres.

Potential downsides, would include

1. Has he grown up ? His career went into decline when he went off the rails as a party boy.

2. Will he struggle with the pace and physicality of the PL ?

3. Will his injury problems re-surface ?

The club clearly think he is worth a gamble, and I'll be interested to see how he does ... glass half full and all that
