So is he a better option that Ivanovic based on 1 game?

Form is everything and good form should be awarded doesn't mean he is better but Ivanovic has made loads of mistakes this year.

He isn't brilliant but he looks coatchable and most crucially puts Dave at rb and Ivan on the bench our back 4 should be

--CA---------DL-------JT---------MA

sadly I see Ivan somehow plough his way back against arsenal and Gaz back with JT which to me is insanity, but status quo seems to mean a lot at Chelsea

I don't think you can comment on If he is great or not after one game you have to take into consideration we did play against Leicester that's not an easy game that and Alonso really wasn't at any fault for the two awful goals we conceded If anything it was Azpilicueta for the first one then Luiz and Begovic for the second one both were terrible goals to concede embarrassing tbh.

He played a big part in their first goal. He gave the ball away cheaply, then his attempt to block the cross was pretty bad, his jump was nowhere near the ball. Dave and Luiz were at fault as well though.

played a huge part in the second goal too- between him and luiz on that side there was no communication as to who was picking up okazaki. initially he has him- its all well and good to assume that luiz will take him once he is in the middle as ostensibly he's luiz' man, but you need to talk to him, especially if you are picking him up in the first place.

in the end neither of them did anything. with JT in that position that goes doesn't happen IMO.

he did reasonably aside from the two goals (what a ludicrous thing to say, mind). I'd prefer us to play him than ivanovic as

1) ivan's finished as a fullback and we need to move away from him as a regular sooner than later

2) JT can help alonso through the games

3) azpilicueta can provide cover / solidity alongside luiz

4) azpilicueta could even drop in to allow luiz to get forward

I'm not too sure if Luiz could have done anything else. He's stuck marking Ahmed Musa (correctly) and so can't step out to take Okazaki or close down Andy King because it leaves Musa free for the easy pass.

Matic was in a position where he was too slow to either close down King or recover and mark Musa.

But given Alonso was tracking Okazaki's run towards goal it was a bit rash and silly to leave him and close down King - it turned a difficult pass into a simple one for him.

I'm not really sure what the right play is, to be honest. Maybe we should've just let King have the ball and force him into a low-percentage shot from range.

Luiz for the second had a fairly easy job to do but he made a total balls up of it there is a reason why the commentary highlighted him.

Not sure which part you're referring to. In terms of his marking leading up to the through-pass, he was spot on. Tightly marking Musa and preventing him from being free.

Watching it again, Alonso should have never left his tracking. Matic easily had a potential shot covered.

He hasn't just played one game in his career as well has he? He hasn't been great in his career so far. Beyond that to talk specifically about the game: he was decent but HE WASNT GREAT but as I said he looks coachable. Blaming Luiz for the second is just looking for things that are not there, he couldn't leave musa free then he was alert to the danger and stayed tight on Okazaki who managed to fluke it through the keeper, if he has that chance 100 more times he wouldn't score, but where was the left back during this? He left Okazaki then charged out to the LC player putting the ball in who was already covered then got stuck in no mans land , that was an easier job stick with the runner, instead luiz left musa when he saw the threat was gone and went with Okazaki who should have been Alonso's man, maybe watch it instead of relying on the "commentator highlighting it" do you listen to their asseesment of costas tackles too?

Give him a chance. He did give the ball away and follow the play in field when his man stayed wide so it was a big distance to cover to cut out the cross. Although some people don't realise that full backs are coached to defend narrow being nearer to their centre half and have wide man cover the player crossing.

Thank you I see you actually watch football mate, luiz being blamed for having his man covered then getting tight to the man who Alonso was marking, using that as justification why Alonso is good and luiz "embarrassing" I wasn't even blaming Alonso although he was the one who ran out to stop the ball coming in which matic had covered and let his man run in and ultimately score the only thing luiz could do was leave musa a split second sooner but to do that he would need a shout from Alonso who had him originally, it's communication which can be somewhat forgiven since it's a new backline.

I hate sounding like an apologist for Alonso but his errors are been exaggeratedly blamed by the press and knee jerk reactors as leading to the goal. I think the goals were due to good luck on LC and piss ass poor goal keeping. Begovic is to blame, not Alonso. I cannot believe he is getting flack for closing in on the second goal after the poor clearance.

Not sure what to expect from this guy :/

nor am I.  It's a shame that we've not addressed the LB spot in any form of seriousness since Ashley Cole.  I though Luis would have been fine, but he was up against the managers incistence that we play Ivan at RB and Azpi at LB

Didn't see anything at all to get excited/happy about. One game so won't overreact.... But I've been reminded by him of Azier Del horno  :|

Absolute legend. Everything i wish Ashley Cole could have been.

Can't judge on a single game against last years champions away from home.

He will need game time and consecutive starts if we are to get a proper look at him. If we do a Baba and only play him here and there it's already over before it begins.

Didn't you specifically slate me for saying he wasn't brilliant and said "can't judge off one game" but you judged he IS good enough off one game...I agree he is a better option than Ivan btw but consistency  please mate

I don't mind taking a horses for courses approach to our fullbacks for the foreseeable future.  Ivanovic can have a good game and then be absolutely horrendous the next, and that may be down to the opposition. Coaching staff have to pick accordingly while we are still in the title chase.

it's also not just about Ivanovic.  Alonso needs to prove he can do a better job than Ola Aina.  He needs to show that hes played senior football for many years and can play a role.

He has improved, I liked how he went forward to attack, he always was an option for a shot or a cross, always was available for balls. I just hope he will be ready to get down quickly when the opponent is faster in counter attacks.
