how porto and basel ever got through i don't know. see, this is why a super european cup should be created. the top clubs in certain leagues aren't good enough. they may as well go in the europa league as they are not doing anything in the champions league.

Then it would just become boring. Beskitas, Porto, Shakthar, and Basel deserve to be in the Champions League knockout rounds. Quality wise, this is the best the Champions League has been in years. Porto came up against a great attacking unit, as did Basel. The Champions League is cracking tournament. It's wonderful seeing some of the teams who've qualified going up against these mega teams. Look at Qarabag, this year. Apart from the beating against Chelsea they did great. That's the beauty of the tournament. Money earned, memories made, experience gained.

Completely disagree with this. Basel and Porto are quality teams. Had they come up against us or United they would probably have got a result. Unfortunately for them they both came up against what are probably two of the best attacking teams left in the competition!

Yes but in the round of 16 and getting 4/5 put past you at home is very poor showing. I don't remember a round of 16 where teams have looked so poor.

It's already boring though. Only this season has there been a bit more competition. Previously we could pretty much predict the semi finalists. I don't see that changing in the next 5 years tbh.

We have to be honest and admit that the CL isn't like the time Leicester won the premier league. Smaller, less financially backed clubs will never win it or imo, reach the final.

A lesser team could quiet easily reach the final(Don't forget, it has happened.) Leicester City reached the Quarterfinals and weren't a million miles away from reaching the Semi Finals. And defining a lesser team is difficult. A lot of clubs are based on their history and former accomplishments. Porto and Monaco reached the Final back in 2004 was a bit of shock for sure. These things can, and will happen though. There is always a dark horse, that's the beauty of the tournament. Would say a Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, or Chelsea reaching the Final be considered a shock?

Why is it, that on this forum, (and many other fans forums), that whenever one of our rivals put 4 or 5 past a team, it's because said team must have been sh*t? Is it really that hard for you guys to give our rivals credit. Basel have a fantastic record against English teams, which just goes to show how good Pools result against them was. Especially at home!

Liverpool didn't play basel

Sorry, yes your're right. I'm getting my teams mixed up. My point still stands though. What Pool and City did last night wasn't just because they were playing sh*t teams, because they were not!

Absolutely spot on. The moment you acknowledge how good a rival team is, or rate a player from their team, you are told your a secret fan of that team. A quality player is a quality player. A good team is a good team. A good performance is a good performance. Find it a bit childish when people express hate for a team, no matter what. I mean, that " We hate Tottenham " chant at the Bridge is f**king ridiculous. Spoils the liquidator.

I'll give credit where it's due, city had a good group and beat a good napoli side. Liverpool really haven't been tested, they had a mediocre group and the only test vs sevilla they struggled.

Porto, despite missing two of their best players, sh*t the bed defensively. A team like porto shouldn't be losing like that at home in the rnd of 16.

City are looking strong for sure. I just look at the champions league this year and the top European clubs are worse, and it seems the smaller clubs are going that way too. Spurs could have lost vs juve, but equally spurs put up a great test and dominated juve for most of the game.

We also faced a weaker atletico side and roma we shouldn't have performed that badly against. I can be realistic as well and recognise the CL has weakened this season.

Would love two english teams facing each other off in the quarter-finals. Us vs City would be amazing if we can get through. If not then I'd like Spurs vs City, the two most well rounded and balanced teams from the country.

Embarrassing to see Napoli half assing that game vs leipzig. To top it off Napoli's stadium was almost empty. I dunno why uefa don't just allow some clubs the choice to opt out of the Europa. Napoli obviously focused on beating juve to the title, these extra fixtures are a unnecessary distraction.

Never happen.

Taking only the top 2 or 1 from smaller leagues is a good idea. Makes it more exclusive and relieves some fixture congestion, especially in England. It also makes Europa league more enticing and rewarding theoretically.

I like the group stages and I think they'd be better if the field wasn't so large or full of weak teams. Much rather see 4 groups of the highest finishers than a knockout competition where one bad night leaves you out from the start

I'd like to see the CL back to what it was before, the two top teams from the strong leagues and the winner of the weaker ones. Maybe do a league stage as it is now but with fewer teams. And the return of the Cup Winners Cup, that would be awesome as well. It gave a higher sense of relevance to the Cups, and I always thought the CWC was more important than the actual Europa League.

We need to restore the CL to what it was back in the 70s. Look how many top sides you had to get past to win it back then:

1976-7 (Liverpool's first win)

1st Round - Crusaders 2-0, 5-0 (7-0)
2nd Round - Trabzonspor 0-1, 3-0 (3-1)
Quarter-Final - St Etienne 0-1, 3-1 (3-2)
Semi-Final - FC Zurich 3-1, 3-0 (6-1)
Final - Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-1

I mean, look how it's been devalued when you compare that epic run to our mickey mouse effort in 2011-2

today I've watched Eibar vs Uefalona. they were struggling even after ref decided to give Eibar the 2nd yellow for this 'incident' of hand kicking the ball. first this low-life busquets does what he does best. diop was booked and not happy with the decission orellana handkick the ball in the air and gets the red card.  Eibar were closing in so then the ref deceides to step in.
