August 29, 20232 yr Apparently he is back after the international break. Gusto should still be starting. James' issues continue to arise and unless he takes the time to improve his mobility and ROM this will continue to happen. Really hope the physios uncover what ever the hell is wrong with him.
August 29, 20232 yr Really is crazy that our multi million pound physio department hasn't simply told Reece to lose weight. Why don't these experts in their field just look on here on how to fix Reece?????

James was so limited in his stretching and balance to the point where it gives me the impression he doesn't really work on it.

Not a dig at you at all but don't you think the club in the last 4 years would have identified it or worked on it if it was that simple?

You'd hope. This reoccurring issue gives me the impression a lot of scar tissue has built up and James himself isn't personally working on mitigating that.

James seems like one of the most professional and driven athletes we've produced. I can't for one second believe he's not doing absolutely everything advised and physically possible to mitigate any injury issues.
August 29, 20232 yr I wish we would get off this "he needs to lose weight" thing. He doesn't have a weight issue. We all belong to a certain body type, James is the physical peak version of his body type.

Looks like he is flying. Now these two problems are separate but I would think Reece with constant hammy problems could try something similar. He has all the help he can get for it so he should. He is the captain and he needs to play.
August 30, 20232 yr I panic every time I see new posts in this thread. Terrified they will be reports that he has had a new injury, or reoccurrence of a previous one, and is now out for six months.

You think reading advice on here he could transition into a Peter Crouch shape if he only listened !

August 30, 20232 yr I don't think he's over weight now, but too much strength training means he's basically muscle bound. His muscles have no give in them, he needs to tone down that side of his training.

There are a lot of hot takes in this thread with very little evidence. Here's a fun fact - we actually have very little evidence to determine what are the risk factors for injury to professional athletes. There is some research about the impacts of BMI on injury rates in normal people, but professional athletes, especially elite, top-level footballers, have very different body composition to your average weekend warrior let alone sedentary office-dweller. Likewise there's lots of research showing the risk of injury increases with age in elite youth footballers but precious little of substance examining the impact of age on professional footballers (ie adults). We also have some evidence that muscular strength prevents injuries for athletes in general but nothing within the specific context of elite footballers, or details on what sorts of strengths or how much. There's also limited evidence to suggest that contact (ie tackling), jumping and fatigue/overuse are the most commonly reported factors for injury. But there is nothing out there that shows that weight, muscularity, flexibility, ROM etc. etc are any consideration for professional players who are already far more optimal than an average adult in all those respects.
August 31, 20232 yr I admit I have zero knowledge of the area. Just by judging my own body with playing sports like football is if I have gained a couple of pounds after summer for example I can feel it in my knees and hips. I can tell it comes from the extra weight as I have my routines with stretching and conditioning. As soon as the weight goes down again the issues go away. Nothing to do with a top athlete like Reece though.

From my own experience, it either relates to scar tissue build up or limited range of motion, typically its both. With Gusto's form (and not being called up the national team thankfully) it should give the club enough time to address James' injury given all we are doing is speculating. August 31, 20232 yr The weight thing is just weird, there's literally no evidence of it being a problem, he's always been a unit even as a kid, he's just a big un, even his sister is a similar build. Where did it thus ridiculous thing even originate? Edited August 31, 20232 yr by dkw

Where did it thus ridiculous thing even originate? I think it's a bit of copium for some people, they want an easy solution to this, something as simple as having too much weight. But sadly his injuries look more complicated than that. It pains me that one of the greatest products from the Chelsea academy, a lad who loves this club and is 100% captain material just can't stay fit. It's actually so unfortunate, I can only hope it gets sorted, but I can't help but feel that it's been going on for too long for this to be a thing of the past.
