November 25, 20232 yr Just now, Scott Harris said: Our most talented youth player ever was Terry. As far as ceiling goes I think he can be even better, but no disagreements from me saying Terry being the most talented. Leadership goes, he's a child. Petulant Child.

They hadn't shown enough leadership or consistent quality that deserved the captaincy. They were the options for one reason, they were Chelsea academy graduates. That's not a good enough reason for me. I've seen James lose his head too much, he even got a booking from the bench a few weeks back for mouthing off at the ref.
November 25, 20232 yr Captain choices are usually political by a manager, either to appease the fans, players on the team or to keep a player that wants to leave at the club. I can see why Poch picked James, especially since a large section of the fan base wanted him as the next captain and it was also the summer when Mount left the club and there was a huge turnover of the squad. In a perfect world, however, Enzo would have been given the armband IMO and James/Chilwell/Thiago the vice captain.

In hindsight it would've been mental back in preseason given his form, but as far as leading by example goes he's the closest thing atm.

Don't disagree, only reason I didn't name him is because I doubt he'll be at Chelsea beyond his current contract so it will mean we have to name another captain in a few years time so it would probably be better to start weaning one of our younger players into the role.
November 25, 20232 yr James lost his head a couple of times today. The 2nd yellow, obviously a brain dead decision - but also early after he was fouled by Joelinton (I think). He got into a spat with someone on the newcastle bench, and from the resulting freekick, just kicked it straight to their player. I worry about him. Looks like he has lost a yard....isnt getting up to be a threat up top, and when he does, he is struggling to get back.
November 25, 20232 yr Pochettino needs to install discipline, starting with himself, and stripping James of the armband because of his behavior.
November 25, 20232 yr Once that decision is made.. there’s no going back. Concerning decision at the time, as Silva could have just been given it and there would have been another season to ‘think it over’. If Reece was displaced, it will chip at him and cause problems and the most hilarious thing is the so called vice captain will always have an asterisk over his name.
November 25, 20232 yr A very poor moment in James Chelsea career today. We expect, and the club deserves better, than his actions today. I’m sure he’ll learn quickly and be better for it, but was hard to watch. Injuries aside, probably the worst moment of his Chelsea career for me. Not good enough.
November 25, 20232 yr Reece should pay the ticket and travel expenses of each traveling fan, for getting himself sent off and the terrible example he set as captain. Failing that the club should fine him 2 weeks of wages and use it to pay those fans expenses and ticket cost back.

If you take the captaincy away from him, I doubt he will react well. In that case I couldsee him being lured away by Real Madrid in the summer. Although that might happen either wau at this rate, especially if we need to make some $$ for FFP.

Worrying about who'll be captain in a few years really should take a backseat to worrying about the leadership qualities of today's captain. It's late November, and so far, James has missed 9 out of 16 matches (league and cup); out of the 7 matches he played 2 were wins, 3 draws, 2 losses. His return after being injured again wasn't influential (enough) to set off a team fighting spirit to build on. On top of this his disciplinary record is questionable. At present, he shouldn't be captain, maybe first or second vice captain. Reece as captain being an academy product is all very romantic and sentimental, but he has brought little to justify the armband. "Weaning" a younger player as captain is arguably being done with Gallagher. First choice for captain is not a position you still want to be doing any weaning for. You want a disciplined, clear leader, who can be expected to be fit for the best part of the season. At present, the only candidates I see are Silva and Sterling.

November 26, 20232 yr First thing came to my mind is how he's our leader with these actions... Very stupid and unprofessional red card, even when you're not a captain, you're not supposed to do this. Maybe it's something that he needs for his experience of becoming a real captain of this team.
November 26, 20232 yr If Pochettino is serious about installing discipline, and showing what happened yesterday is not acceptable, he needs to strip Reece of Captancy

How about you lot actually stop talking the talk and walk the walk? String 3-4 good performances back to back. Let's start there. That being said, stripping him of the captaincy is the wrong move.

I agree on the social media, though I found Silvas heartfelt not a puff piece none apology likes Reeces. I disagree on the captaincy. Letting him keep it after that sends the message to the rest what he did was OK and leadership worthy.

I'm not saying he's on their level at this point but would you have stripped it off Terry after Barcelona or Cahill after Burnley?

No JT had a lot of credit in the bank, and that was a moment of blood rage not having time to think "I know what would be a good idea, getting myself sent off just after I came back from injury in a game we have lost already". The Cahill one i don't remember. Edited November 27, 20232 yr by axman2526
