David Datro Fofana to Chelsea

First of many loans since he's on a 8 years deal. Nothing against the guy, even at the time thought was a strange signing. He's not a proven player from a good league,  doesn't have the next big thing tag on him either.

Well he's going to a top club in Germany, we only spend £10m on him. Berlin will be spending money on a loan fee that may well cover his amortized transfer fee. If he doesn't become a top talent, we can sell him, and could well recoup our transfer fee.

Basically, he's an asset that's more likely than not going to be profitable.

If anything this is proof of the new system potentially working. Not all the young signings will work out.

young player bought for a cheap fee. Isn’t first team ready so can go out on loan, if he doesn’t end up being Chelsea level he’s on low wages and we won’t take a book hit on him. Someone will take a low fee gamble on a young player from Chelsea, always.

This is completely different to the old system that gave us Bakayoko (although Baba R is probably a closer comparison here)

True, although the fees we are paying for these 17, 18 and 19 year old kids isn't far off what continental clubs are paying for cross European seasoned pros. We are paying 15m - 20m for some of these kids.

We run the risk of the next group coming through will have no homegrown players because we would have bought the lot and they wouldn't have done the time in the youth set up. Getting an Hutchinson or the double barrelled lad from Everton is one thing but we just have to be mindful that we don't over tip the balance.

I can’t remember the rules exactly but I’m sure it’s if you are trained for 3 seasons before being 21 at the same club you count as homegrown, so hopefully some of the younger ones fall into that category.

i can see the concern for the current youth players, we’ve already lost some of them. Definitely a watch this space area, hopefully most that are Chelsea level will stay and follow that route although 1 of those that left recently will obviously become a star because life

Another 2 goals and an assist in DDF's latest preseason match, this time against Atalanta.

Wow, he’s already everything Lukaku isn’t, I love his tenacity to fight for every ball. The fact he can somersault like that tells me he doesn’t get injured.
