November 5, 20241 yr I agree with most of you about this. Unfortunately sanchez is currently our best keeper, but until that changes top4 is a hard target to reach. Jorgensen isn't the answer as we saw in the league Cup. I would love if they do a clean slate on the gks. Sell all of them apart from 2 youngsters with potential, and sanchez or Jorgensen as #2 (whoever has a higher ceiling) and go all in on a proper gk. I don't care if we don't have any money for anything else. The squad (minus gk) atm can get us top 4, have potential to do better than that, grow, etc but I don't think we can follow that process with the gk position. It needs to be someone that is ready now or nearly ready while taking even more time developing a youngster. It's a slower process than outfield players. Sanchez can actually be detrimental for the growth of our young outfield players atm.

City won the league that season with soft-wristed Joe Hart in goal, not better than Cech at any point in his career. Liverpool were swapping between Mignolet and Reina. Arsenal had Szczesny, United had just signed De Gea, who was starting to show form, but they finished down in 8th, conceding 43 goals. By the way, we finished 3rd with 27 goals against that season, the best defense by 10 goals. For comparison, the following season we won the league, with almost identical goals for but conceding 32 goals. He was also the chosen keeper for the PFA Team of the Year that year. He was by some way the best keeper in the league in 2013/14. We might have even won the title that year had he been fit to play against Sunderland. I'm not sure on what basis you can make your statement.
November 6, 20241 yr Will it take an injury for Jorgensen to finally get a go? Much like with Petrovic? If our directors can be described in 3 words for our GK and CB mess, its 'sunk cost fallacy'.

Unfortunately sanchez is quite a bit better than Jorgensen atm.

With perhaps the one exception of Alisson, all the goalkeepers in this list follow a single archetype; small, decent shot-stoppers, but inconsistent, poor command of their area, heavily error-prone and rely on reflex saves. Every goalkeeper is now a wannabe Victor Valdes or Iker Casillas. As a comparison example, look at the GK list for 2006/07: Almost every club 1-20 has a top-tier goalkeeper in comparison, and only Robinson and Isaksson have a Save % lower than the best goalkeeper Save % last season - Andre Onana's 74.9%,. Would any of the modern keepers even make this list, even for a relegation club? Has the standard of goalkeeper just plummeted over the last 15 years or has the game changed to be less favourable to goalkeepers? I don't know if I buy the latter excuse, goalkeepers of the mid-2000s had to contend with far less protection from referees (especially prior to 2006/07) and ridiculous balls like the T90 and Jabulani. His actions and facial expressions give quite a lot away. Granted its not a full season but there's enough there for now. In all the conference league games he's looked flustered and uncomfortable, even passing the ball before the press and looking scared while doing it. Watch some of the highlights again mate, maybe they show them in extended highlights but the "passing the ball too quick and not waiting for the press" issue is similar to when sanchez gets flustered. They end up passing it to where our player was or where he's supposed to be instead of to the actual player; hence it gets picked up by an opposition player. No idea if he will be better than sanchez in the future or not, but unfortunately he's not as good as sanchez yet. I hope he steps up because sanchez is dire! He's the one that makes me doubt top 4 this season.

Obviously, with our club being a case in point LOL, it's all down to modern strikers being better 🙂 I suspect, possibly some flaws in the old data, seeing as none of this stats stuff was really a thing back in 2006
November 7, 20241 yr 10 GK’s from GB and Ireland in 2006, wonder what the percentage is now, possibly 4 ?

Data analysis is not something new, it's just more easily accessible now. OPTA have kept metrics for the EPL since 1996, but it was subscription only. Your fansites like FBRef either have since purchased that data, or have manually collected it by re-watching old footage.
November 8, 20241 yr Don't know why the club are dragging their feet. With all the outpouring on social media this week re Gary Barlow's massive son, we should be signing him up and giving him the No.1 jersey.

November 11, 20241 yr I'm astounded that he isn't getting panned for the goal, Martinelli didn't even smash the ball near post and it went in.
November 11, 20241 yr Even the Arsenal fan I work with says that should have been saved. I have next to no faith in Sanchez. Surely to goodness there is much a better keeper out there somewhere?

It's more that like @Ukraine Bolt we have no expectations whatsoever for the guy. So it's just an expected mistake. Nothing new on this front, sadly.

November 11, 20241 yr I thought he actually did ok yesterday, made some very good, crucial saves. But his positioning for the goal was terrible, basic keeping is to cover your near post at that angle.
November 11, 20241 yr Im not holding him responsible for that goal. Could have should have done better but keepers get done all the time on near post... Salah beat the best keeper in the world (Matrinez) on his near post saturday. The ball across to nearly three unmarked Goons at the far post did Sanchez yesterday. Happening regularly across games against all level sides. But share @dkw view that he actually did alright yesterday. He swapped near post positioning error for better decision making kicking the ball yesterday... Taking that as a positive.

And there were a couple of punches, one in particular in the first half where even I could have caught the ball. I guess we've been spoilt with Cech and Courtois in recent memory.

Although I was pretty worried when my fav dutch porn star plumber/handyman got a run of games between the sticks a while back. Fun times.
