after Rooney's cameo on saturday i really want him to join us. ill always support torres, or any other player in our shirt, but you cannot compare the impact the two players have on a match. Rooney would fit in perfectly with our trio of playmakers as well

Well based purely on the contributions of their games this weekend I would say you can quite easily compare the contributions they provided to their respective teams.

Neither player scored, both contributed with some nice link up play.

Rooney got two assists (one being nothing more than having the final touch before RVP carved out a piece of individual brilliance for his goal) whilst Torres won a penalty and won  the free kick that lead to Franks goal.

Hardly apples & oranges.

Rooney was on the pitch for 30 minutes, compared to Torres' 70 and still contributed more. Not to mention Rooney lacks match fitness

Yep, they were obviously on the pitch for different amounts of time, I think we all know that.

They both lack match fitness I would say, neither have had a full pre-season.

The point remains that their constributions were pretty similar though.

Not sensble arguing this but...

Torres got us a penalty, won the freekick for Lampard and put him through once. Good from Torres. This is early game which is arguably harder against fresh players and fresh defense.

Rooney came on had two assists late in the game which was already in the bag against tired and beaten swansea players. Also at least the other assist for ManU goal was a short pass to RvP who then dribbled past 3 players and shot a brilliant shot in thr top corner. Rooney did very little there for that goal to come...

Again I'm not saying Torres is better than Rooney but I don't like how you just simply brush his contribution under the rug there. He was good. Both players were good in the two games.

Can you imagine the backlash if Torres got credit for an 'assist' of the nature of the one that Rooney notched up for the RVP goal?

Seriously, it is an assist on paper but anyone who watched it knows full well that RVP essentially scored and assietd that goal himself, Rooney just happens to be the last man United player that touched the ball before he did so.

You are currently crediting him for winning a free kick 30-40 meters away from goal - which is a similar contribution to making a 2 yard pass 30 meters from goal.

Just imagine my outrage  :laugh2:

You have pretty much just proved the point I was trying to make.

What you seem to have missed is that the only reason I am 'cerditing' anything is the fact that it was stated that the difference in the performances of both players was vast, which it really wasn't.

The only reason I brought up the free kick is the fact that you brought up the "type assist" Rooney made against Swansea.

The only reason I brought up the free kick is the fact that you brought up the "type assist" Rooney made against Swansea.

And the only reason I brought up the nature of the assist against Swansea was the fact that it was suggested that his overall contribution was greater than that of Torres, presumably because he got two assists.

Try reading from top to bottom mate.

Nope your point was that you said

"Can you imagine the backlash if Torres got credit for an 'assist' of the nature of the one that Rooney notched up for the RVP goal?"

I simply implied that over the last few pages quite a few people have positively commented about Torres winning the free kick from which Lampard scored, I didn't bring it up until you made this gem of a post.

What you fail to understand is that if the hyperbole about Torres performances range from both sides. Comments like yours ask for reactions and I was simply providing what you asked for.

I myself though he had a decent game against Hull but I know he can score or perform well against the likes of Hull; Leicester; Leeds; QPR; Wolves; Genk; Norjdeland(sp?); but yet again there were things against possibly one of the favorites to get relegated that I didn't like amongst them never being in a position in the box to receive a ball.

rooney not only passed to van persie but also made a fantastic run to create confusion and time for him

You still seem to be missing the point that I only made that 'gem of a past' as you put it, in reaction to the fact that it had been suggested that Rooney had contributed so much more whilst at the same time suggesting that Rooney is exactly what we are missing based on his performance on Saturday and presumably his two assists were the basis of this suggestion.

People may have credited Torred for a positive bit of play (shock horror) but nobody, from what I have seen, is suggesting anything dramatic, certainly nothing as dramatic as the suggestion that Rooney is the answer on the back of his two 'assists'.

Anyway, no interest in going round in circles on this one as we are both starting to repeat ourseves and you do enough of that on this thread (as seen in the rest of your waffle above) without me encouraging you to do it any more.

If the strongest argument for Torres playing or even being worth anything is that he win's free kicks and penaltys or that he has "nice inter link play" then we may as well play one of our attacking mid's up there who have better control, better touch, better interlink play, better chance of drawing fouls and will retain possetion better.

He needs to be a threat, a real goal threat, he's not, he hasn't been in some time, we need much better, I imagine Lukaku is much better.

We want to win a big prize, we need a top drawer striker, simples.

We ain't got one, simples.

That's why Jose wants Rooney.

He's now said he has a Plan B and a Plan C.

Thank god.

Torres is nowhere near good enough for this team.

Simples.

Jose had heard he was a pile a poo but wanted to see it for himself.

Now he knows.

Don't be surprised if a Plan W and a Plan X are just around the corner.

Anyone making apologies for this fraud of a footballer needs their head tested, if they have a head at all.

A top striker in this team would tear the world apart.

Those of you trying to draw comparisons between Rooney and Torres need to quit the hallucinogenics.

Seriously, I know they make you happy but they also make you stupid.

Haha I also seem to remember you saying torres wouldn't get a training session under jose before he is sold. I think ba needs to be the one that is worried about a plan b or c coming in.

The Torres thread...

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I've tried to find a graphic of a cartoon character stuffing a hand grenade down his pants and throwing himself off a cliff. I can't find one but I'd add that here if I could...

It's the best I can do:

Perfect. I must buy one from Acme Siege Engines Co. :-)

No offence intended to owt but there are nearly 7500 posts. Half say: too expensive and too poor a striker, half say: he's not bad/he's getting better. This cycle repeats itself. The strength of feeling is impressive.

That for me is a bit of a shame.

While I haven't seen anything from Demba to say he is good enough to be our main striker or that he is the right fit for the team,

I have seen him score some decent goals against good sides and not get a run in the team that he deserved, I have been excited by him if only for the simple feeling that he will worry the opposition in a way I don't often see Torres doing and for me he looks more likely to get us out of trouble if we are not on the up in a game.

I have seen plenty of Torres and he just doesn't inspire confidence and I always feel if we are under the cosh, I'd like to see the manager bring on Ba and now this season Lukaku.

I haven't seen enough of either of our other strikers to know if a run of games would have me screaming for Torres to come off the bench and it might be reasonable to think that if these are the three choices for the rest of the season that might end up being the case but I doubt either of the others will be afforded the game time that Fernando has been if it is.

That for me is a bit of a shame.

I think it would be a shame as well. I agree he scored a couple of vital goals last season but for me he doesn't link up with our midfield as well as torres does. He is a good option to have of the bench though and I'd like to see us stick with the 3 we have at the minute because I think there is enough goals between them.

I just dont know why we keep having the same discussions, by now we all should know what Torres offers and expect no more really, the odd goal here and there with some good link up play with the 3 amigos.

Anyway, this buy was a mistake to start with, 50m for a Torres who had struggled with injuries + he isnt even a player suited for how we play and how we want to play, José said so himself I believe in an interview (That he is not a player that will shine when he has to be that target man with players around him, as Drogba for example)

Torres at Liverpool excelled at fast counter attacking football living of Gerrards passing to burst through with pace nicking goals, he has and never will be good in and around the box with the way we play, holding it up and stuff - he has always looked clumsy doing skills around the box to be fair.

I just hope José can get at least 75 % out of him for now, we certainly need Wayne Rooney.

But making that judgement on a player that has not had a run in the team is again, a bit unfair...I'm not sure how many ninety minutes hes had but if you compared it to Torres first equal run of games I'm not sure you'd see anything any worse.

I doubt you'd see the goal drought and be counting the minutes until he scored either.

I'm trying not to bash Torres but his treatment considering the return here has been very lenient in comparison to about any other striker anywhere, I think what ever the arguments for why Sturridge didn't get many starts when you see the same happen with Ba and Torres is still not setting the world on fire it gets a worry that it could be the same thing happening again.

Scratch that last bit, I think the manager we have now has more confidence in his position than Robbie had and much bigger cajones than the bloke that masqueraded as our manager in between the two.
