February 26, 201313 yr I must say I liked that interview, seems like a level headed guy, hope he gets a chance next year and bangs them in!
February 26, 201313 yr Iif Lukaku follows the Sturridge pattern he'll be starting regularly next year. If Lukaku follows the Sturridge pattern he'll be starting regularly next term in the wrong position, while others labour in the position he should be playing. Sturridge scored more league goals last term than Torres and Drogba combined. Now consider that he was out of position under AVB and didn't get a look-in at all under Robbie. Nice.

Nice. lukaku has the luck of coming into the team at a time when torres has been completely exposed there are no more excuses left for torres and its clear as day that we need to cut lour loses with him

What other position can you play Lukaku in? I know Sturridge played on the wing, but he had some attributes that made him effective in that role such as his pace and acceleration.
February 26, 201313 yr What other position can you play Lukaku in? I'm sure the FSW is thinking of converting him into a full-back.

February 26, 201313 yr No, no you dont. Don't know why everyone can't see it personally. All our promising youngsters or most will be shipped off for profit. De Bruyne is a good example. I will eat my sock if Lukaku gets a regular spot in the side next season.

February 26, 201313 yr I can see where JoeyN is coming from. With Roman, instant success is the name of the game, regardless of an extremely promising Drogba-esque player who actually knows where the goal is located on a football pitch. Sadly our current No.9 doesn't. But i can see us splashing out big in the summer on a proven goal scorer, and we'll leave Lukaku at WBA for another season on loan. Then we'll bring him back and he'll sit on the bench like Studge did. Lukaku will play for us, albeit intermittently. Sad, but true.

And yet despite playing in a slightly wrong position (I don't think cutting inside in AVB's system was that different from playing as a second striker off Kevin Davies, which was what Sturridge did at Bolton), despite being injured or stuck behind Torres the whole time he was pencilled in our depth chart in his best role, Sturridge still got far more of a chance than JoeyN thinks Lukaku will get.
February 26, 201313 yr Don't know why everyone can't see it personally. All our promising youngsters or most will be shipped off for profit. De Bruyne is a good example. I can't speak for everyone else, but the reason I don't see it is because once you get down to people good enough to play regularly for Chelsea, there are more recent examples of kids coming back and starting the Champions' League final than there are of kids being sold without ever coming back from loan. We might wind up with more promising youngsters than we have time to play at some positions - I could imagine Kakuta being sold because we have Oscar-Hazard-Mata-Moses-De Bruyne ahead of him and Piazon coming up behind. But there's no precedent or sane reason for the club selling a youngster as promising as Lukaku, at as thin a position, without giving him a solid chance.
February 26, 201313 yr Lukaku at anderlacht i think he was at scored 33 goals in 73 apps torres for chelsea scored 18 goals 74 apps. Romelu is just starting his career while fernando is nearing the end.

February 26, 201313 yr What I meant with Sturridge blue print is the following: We don't give nearly enough time for youth players on the field for them to actually develop unless it's a player who we've paid a big fee for(Oscar/ Hazard etc). Our club currently utilizes a system with one striker(based on the attacking midfield players we have I believe that's the correct decision) so if Lukaku is 3rd choice next season it's unlikely he would get more than 1000 minutes for the entire year. Sturridge before being played out on the wing under AVB had a combined of 1200 minutes on the field in the previous two years at Chelsea - time which is no where near enough for a player to develop, for half a season at Bolton(where he only played in the Premier League) he had 976 minutes on the field which is 3 games short of his total time on the field for Chelsea. I fully expect our board to sign a striker in the summer, if that happens and we bring in some big name I just don't see how Lukaku will gain enough chances to continue his development. Young players need to play and we will have a new coach in the summer who might or might not know who is out on loan and how their loans went. There is no stability at the club to allow a young player to gain enough time on the field, specifically in the striker position where Roman seems to bring in his favourite player like Sheva/Torres etc There are two scenario's for Lukaku playing a large part into next season, he continues his scoring run with such a rate that it leads to him becoming a house hold name and our board having no choice but playing him due to other clubs becoming increasingly interested OR we bring in a manager who has specific plans for Lukaku.
February 26, 201313 yr Yes, but once Sturridge came back from impressing on loan (i.e. the point Lukaku's at now), he got a chance. I'm also not convinced we'll spend hugely up front. The club seems to take FFP relatively seriously, which suggests a finite budget, and our primary target has to be central midfield. If Roman can bring himself to give up on Torres, Lukaku may very well wind up fighting for a starting spot.
February 26, 201313 yr Yes, but once Sturridge came back from impressing on loan (i.e. the point Lukaku's at now), he got a chance. No, that's being disingenuous - he didn't get a "chance" in his preferred position. Right now Sturridge has probably played more minutes in the EPL leading the line for Liverpool than during all the previous years at Chelsea.
February 26, 201313 yr He didn't lead the line at Bolton - he played off Kevin Davies in a partnership, which I'd argue corresponds more closely to cutting in from the wing behind Drogba than to being a lone forward. We didn't give Sturridge a great chance, but he started 28 Premiership matches in one season, which for my money counts as a regular spot.
February 26, 201313 yr He spent the majority of his time at Bolton playing from wide out, the best game he had was against arsenal, where he played wide right.
February 26, 201313 yr Sprouting nonsense again. While Sturridge was there, Coyle used Davis behind him because Sturridge is the faster player who can play on the shoulders of defenders while Davis was the guy holding up the ball and winning aerial battles. And do tell me how Sturridge played the majority of the time on the wing when Elmander/Taylor was used on one flank and Lee on the other. Here are the details about the Bolton - Arsenal match and you can check the average position for all the players - notice how Davis and Sturridge are really close to each other against Arsenal due to Bolton surrendering possession in that match and relying on Davis capability to knock down some balls into Sturridge's path. http://espnfc.com/en/gamecast/293037/gamecast.html?soccernet=true&cc=null Edited February 26, 201313 yr by Las7
February 26, 201313 yr So by your own account Sturridge spent his time at Bolton using his pace to threaten defenders while a bigger target man won headers for him. Cutting inside from the wing while Drogba played center forward was the closest match our system had to that role. AVB played Sturridge in a role that fit reasonably well with what he'd done on loan, better than playing up front with Mata and Malouda out wide would have. Now, it turns out Sturridge can play up front in a 4-2-3-1, and I wish he'd had a chance to do that here rather than spending the first half of the season injured or rested for the Torres Experiment. But the way AVB used him really wasn't out of line with where he'd previously showed promise - and, again, he started 28 times in the league that season.
February 26, 201313 yr unfortunately, i can see the club selling de bruyne before he even gets a chance at chelsea I disagree i really dont see Chelsea being that stupid,i think KDB will be at Chelsea next season.Do people think his best positon is one of the 3 behind the CF or the 2 infront of the back four?.
