Fabio Coentrao to Chelsea?

Transfer news: Fabio Coentrao eyes Real Madrid exit this summer

Fabio Coentrao looks set to follow Jose Mourinho out of Real Madrid after revealing his unhappiness in the Spanish capital, and is already being linked with Chelsea.

The 25-year-old Coentrao joined Madrid in 2011 from Benfica and he has impressed, playing at both full-back and in midfield.

However, with Mourinho's departure confirmed and the Portuguese coach expected to join Chelsea, Coentrao is looking to follow his fellow countryman through the Bernabeu exit doors.

Speaking to Ojogo in his homeland, Coentrao said: "From the first day I do not think I was wanted here.

"Today it seems that everyone wants me to leave the club. I do not know what I have done wrong.

"We must find a solution that is good for both the club and myself, so that no one will lose out."

Coentrao was asked about the prospect of following Mourinho to Chelsea, and he admitted he would not rule it out.

"If I leave Real Madrid, I do not close the door to anyone," he said.

Thoughts?

Can't see it happening, what with Cole having signed the 12 month deal.

I think it is more likely we will go for Shaw either next summer or buy him this summer and maybe let him stay at Southampton for another year.

God No! but I just can see it happening with Mendes being his agent. LB is an area we have decent cover in & I'd rather we buy Shaw as a long term option.

Hypothetically; if we buy him, I can see us selling Bertrand for a daft price (under £10m) and Mourinho playing Coentrao as a winger.

I like Coentrao alot and if we did buy him i would hardly be disappointed. But like most people on here i would rather we buy Shaw, younger, cheaper,English and a Chelsea fan.But the best thing about him is that he is a very good player.

Shaw, while a very interesting prospect, isn't quite ready to be first choice for us just yet. If we can get Coentrao for about 15-20 million pounds I'd consider that a good bit of business. He's still young and can be rotated with Cole until he eventually replaces him. He can also be played on the wing which we won't need much obviously but it could be a bonus in case of an emergency.

I like Bertrand but I just don't think he is good enough to be our first choice left-back.

Buying Coentrao though would mean that Bertrand won't even be second choice. This would be a pointless signing for me, we still have Cole and a solid LB in Bertrand. Why not just monitor Shaw and in 2 or 3 years time try and get him ?

Cole is nowhere near good enough offensively anymore. He's still defensively sound, though having someone like Coentrao would give us somewhat of a different dimension as he is excellent at going forward. We're missing that type of fullback in my opinion. It's being reported that his price is somewhere around 18 million euros which isn't too expensive. That's about 15-16 million pounds if I'm not mistaken.

As for Bertrand, even though i quite like him I think it would be best to sell him. Even as our second choice LB at the moment he rarely gets game time unless of course Cole is out injured.

Because you don't turn down one of the best LB's in the world for peanuts in today's market purely based on whether or not a kid will reach their potential. All it would take is an injury or something or that sort to derail Shaw's development and I for one don't want to be sitting here in 2/3 years time wishing we had got Coentrao because Shaw hadn't developed into the player we all thought he would. We already missed out on Coentrao once, I wouldn't want it to happen again.

No idea about Bertrand, I think he would be Coentrao's back up with Cole being fazed out gradually. Either way, it's a good problem to have.

^ this is coming from a lad who should hate Coentrao because he was at Benfica. Not completely sure on all of Conetrao's defensive qualities but he would be a decent addition to our squad at a reasonable price

I don't believe that, attacking wise he is great but i don't think he's good at defending at all. I don't think you can be the best LB in the world if you can't actually defend.

For me i would rather stick with Bertrand, he can defend, and with the attacking players we have i don't think an all out attacking LB like Coentrao is needed.

I don't hate any team, United annoy me but that's about as far as it goes. I want all Portuguese teams to do well as it's good for the league.

Think I mentioned this in the Coentrao thread in the General section. His defending is underrated, people think he just runs around constantly out of position or something. He'll never be as good as Cole in that regard, not many are to be fair, but he's better than most. His tackling and intercepting is top notch. Only fault I can see people mentioning is that he's aggressive, which is a fair enough point. Only serves to highlight how good at tackling and intercepting he is though seeing as he's not booked much or given away many fouls in La Liga; a league which we all know is full of cheats.

Those saying we should sign Shaw and still give Bertrand a chance, for a long long time i've been on the same opinion, but to be honest I'm tired of signing a 'prospect' of a young player that might not even be one the level needed, not saying he isn't, just saying he hasn't proven himself yet, i am completely for signing a WORLD CLASS left-back right now, aswell as we need a world class centre-back aswell in the summer.

I think so as well, if we can get Coentrao for around £15mil-£17mil. Cole has only one year left and Bertrand can be loaned out for a year and come back. I would hate Spurs to get him atleast, who are also rumoured to be in for him.

I think that's pointless really,Bertrand is nearly 24 and has been out on loan several times.I don't see the point of him going out on loan at 24 for another year,i don't see him getting any better by doing it.Rather we bought Shaw and loaned him out and recall when Ashley has gone.
