Willian

Featured Replies

In all honesty I find it quite funny that Willian gets so much stick for being bad at the things that Malouda was best at, even though Malouda equally received no end of grief for apparently being too selfish.

Interesting comparison, if you had to choose which one would you prefer over willian and malouda? Personally I'd go with Willian.

Malouda easily, Malouda in his prime was quality, he gave us two good years but after that he was gash. The season after we won the title so many players just went downhill, Anelka, Drogba, Lampard, Essien... We really should have replaced a lot of players after that season, but instead all we did was bring in Ross Turnbull, Ramires and Yossi Benayoun.

That was a poor squad. We went into 1 or 2 seasons with very little depth as well. Malouda in his prime was definitely good. I'd still go with the Willian though.

That year and the season until AVB was sacked was horrible. I remember when we lost to West Brom and AVB was sacked and at the time it was all new for us to be failing like that and looking like a complete shadow of the side we have been since Mourinho left.

Dark days them, however what was probably our worst season ever almost turned out to be our best season, really weird when you think about it isn't it.

I know what people mean about Willian though but you can't fault Malouda's end product, he always had aggressive attitude to grab goals, him and Anelka were my favourite players around that time.

Malouda gave us 15 goals and 15 assists in that title winning season, I like Willian, but I can't see him doing that, so I'd go with Malouda.

You don't think he could reach similar heights? Malouda was 29/30 when he produced his best, having already been here for 3 seasons. Willian is 26 and has been here for one and a half seasons. I do expect his impact (not necessarily goals) to improve as he gains experience.

I don't remember Malouda being a great shooter during his prime year. We were playing great passing/movement football, ripping defence apart, and Malouda just jump out of his position to be in the middle to score some goals. He took hell a lot of shots to score those goals. I don't think Willian will ever play like Malouda, if he does, wouldn't be surprised he ends up with 15 goals by the end of the season.

Willian has his fair share of shots... They're just not very good.

I think Malouda scored 15 the year he was in the title winning team, I doubt Willian will ever get close to that many in a season in truth he's just not instinctive enough in front of goal.

But that was, in my opinion, Malouda's only good season for us.

Ooh you are young aren't you?  We have had far worse seasons than that, believe me.

My family is from West London but we live up north in Middlesbrough now, yeah talk about a down grade :laugh2:

I've had the few plastic fan comments before but when I show them my baby pictures with the Chels shirt, they're usually pretty surprised. Always been a blue, born and raised, just like the family.

My best memory of pre roman players was Hasselbaink, he was my favourite. Besides that it's hard to remember many of that stuff, I usually remember the best parts such as the title win and obviously the worst parts like Moscow. I remember trying to sleep that night, it was awful, what a horrible night for any supporter that was.

Same, him and Zola were my favourites, I got in to Chelsea in the Hoddle years, it was him along with Gullit and Vialli that changed the club, bringing in some great talent, chelsea were definitely the team for me when they came in. I still think we should have won the title in 99, as good as Vialli was he rotated too much, plus we had too many injuries, a great team in the late 90's though.

He could do, I was just referring to the Malouda then and Willian right now, but hopefully Willian can go one to score more goals and get more assists. I admire Willian's work rate, but at the moment he doesn't have the impact going forward that Malouda did in 2009, Malouda won us games, I remember his last minute goal against Stoke, we may not have won the league without him.

Beerqueen said young, not plastic. So if AvB was the worst season ever for you, consider yourself lucky you weren't around to see worse  :good2:

worst 82/83     best 83/84  "boys in blue in division 2", jonny neals blue and white army!!!!!

Slawth, Stim's right I said young not plastic!  I wouldn't call anyone on here that, let alone you.

I think 1974/75 was worse for me than 1982 - when we were relegated the first time (in my experience anyway).  Only 5 years before we'd won the FA cup the first time and had Ossie and co and then to go from that to Division 2.  I was only 12 and I remember I made a black armband to wear to school!

But the worst I've ever felt as a Chelsea fan was the latter half of 2012/13 - I don't need to explain.  For me that was definitely the worst by a long way.

Surly everyone's worst season must be when we hired the FSW.. By default.. Other then that probably the season we sold dixon and Alan and got it flek and Hartford, but I was so young I didn't quite understand that we weren't a great team, it was more events that upset me. Like the sale of townsend.. And after that we always had good cup runs. Some of the claudio years where a bit tough because we spent the money to be a top team but it wasn't happening. Vialli second year was great for me because we where actually title challengers, something I never thought we would be. Then the CL run the next year.

Oh I know that one, I know beerqueen of all people wouldn't say something like that to me. I was just saying living up north and being Chelsea supporter people always label you as a plastic around here.

I guess I am very lucky to grow up and witness our best  years, but also unlucky to not witness some of the greatness before Roman came.

It's why I've took an instant like to this forum, the majority of fans on here are brilliant, have been going to games or many years and I've learned a lot about the history of the club just reading some of the posts. It's a big reason why I kind of miss Hutch also but we've still got plenty more.

The main reason what pissed me off about the Rafa Benitez affair, was that the board didn't listen to the fans. We had huge protests at just even the slightest of rumours about it the season before when AVB was sacked, then the season after it actually happened.

Cheers BQ, spent the last 40 yrs trying to forget that season, especially the game that got us relegated at WHL, which, if you needed one, is yet another reason to hate Sp*rs!

Seems Willian is our "marmite" player, I personally love him in the team, true, sometimes the end result let's him down but the way he regains possession for the team, presses, tackles and breaks away with speed is a joy!

When I see his name on the teamsheet I'm happy.

See I don't think he's exceptional in any of those aspects. He doesn't press any better than anyone else in the team, he doesn't actually win that many tackles and even though he looks rapid, he never seems to actually get away from defenders which is weird. And his end product almost ALWAYS lets him down.

He rarely lets the team down but he's one of the first people to go missing when we're not in complete control. He's the type of player who needs other players to make him look good which is why we need to upgrade him.

I agree with you Jezza and so does Jose

I've seen a few people use the "so does Jose argument" but what other option has he had in terms of being able to pick consistently?

Salah's sh*t, Schurrle had three months of his season wiped out through illness and now seems to be struggling to regain form and Ramires has carried an injury for a few months that meant he couldn't play 90 minutes.

If Jose was that happy with the right wing why are we looking at signing one perhaps two new wingers this month?

Because, it's Andre and salah that will leave, if not now then at the end of the season
