June 26, 20233 yr one of the cobham graduates in the past decade or so that truly had a extremely high ceiling. Such a shame a few injuries derailed his career in the way it did. Good work from the board to get another high wage player off the books, and for a decent fee none the less. Excited to see what he brings to AC Milan!
June 26, 20233 yr Only small details left to go over but apparently RLC terms with Milan and the transfer fee, 16mill euros plus 4mill in add ons all agreed. Basically close to being done.

June 27, 20233 yr Think its a good fee for him all things considered. Was destined for greatness until that ridiculous friendly. His play style should translate to Serie A well, think this will end up being a great signing for Milan. As a footballer he's far better than their league stars at CM like SMS.

I think ultimately his body was always going to break down at some point for us. But yes serie a seems tailor made for him.

Lets not be bias because he's from Cobham. we've completely pulled Milans pants down with the fee. He's nowhere near SMS. Think he's probably the most overated player Cobham has ever produced from a talent perspective and always had a low ceiling. A few Cobham marks gush over his physicality and ability to carry the ball in midfield but how can a player who can't pass, can't shoot, doesn't know when to pass, has extremely low football IQ, no positional awareness and a low work ethic ever be a useful player? Been a blue for longer than he's been alive and I can't recall many worse players to wear the shirt.

You have not seen many worse players in those 11 years (or even in a longer period), RLC is the one that woke you up?

I take it you have not been Chelsea for very long ?

June 27, 20233 yr Great move for him, although I personally would love to have him around. Never whined and never let us down. Hope he goes and smash it in Italy!

His back problems as a young un really slowed his progress, then the bad injuries since. Such an unlucky player, had everything as a youth player and could have been an incredible player for us.
June 27, 20233 yr There were a few games in a row one season where he looked so strong in midfield driving forward and even scoring a couple and then injured and basically NT able to reproduce that ever since. certainly the big clear out this window.

You're talking utter rubbish with your last paragraph but I do agree he was overrated when he was younger. Didn't use the ball very well and was a non entity out of possesion, the odd long bursting run made it look like he was playing better than he actually was. Sarri investing time with him on the training ground (and during matches, I went to most Europa games that year and he was calling him over for instructions on pretty much every break in play) looked to be paying off close to the end of that season, was that a fluke run of form or a genuine breakthrough? Unfortunately we'll never know.
June 27, 20233 yr Honestly think that if it wasn't for that injury he would have been our main man, first name on the team sheet kind of player. He just wasn't the same player after that. I hope he rediscovers some of his initial form in Italy.

Thats absolute nonsense, prior to his back problems he was outstanding in all those aspects, even when he was on loan at Palace he was doing everything a midfielder could superbly, getting him an England call up. In that summer he was wanted by several clubs after impressing during the loan period.

June 28, 20233 yr I would have kept him to be honest. He's versatile, technically sound, and physically capable. He doesn't complain when he's out of the team for long stretches, or when he's played in (erm) experimental positions. He's also club-trained, plus it might be worth keeping hold of more than one of our senior centre midfielders...

He's another one that doesn't need to be sold given our situation.

For me it's telling that his managers pre Sarri didn't know what to do with him (or couldn't be bothered to invest the time coaching him) so seemed to be improvising as they went along. Jose tried to make him a DM, Conte tried him upfront and Roy tried him on LM. No-one was more delighted than me when it looked like I may have been getting proved wrong just before his injury but I was very concerned by how easily he was drifting out of games (there's multiple posts of mine from that era on here displaying that concern).
