Are our rivals about to catch or overtake us?

Featured Replies

Ben Foster flapping at a cross like a big girl's blouse to help gift City a win yesterday and WBA missing some glorious chances show that City, along with their generous Christmas fixtures, are getting the rub of the green right now.

Bearing in mind they've still got some pretty tough away games to come in the 2nd half of the season I am still very confident about us, JT, Matic, Fabregas, Oscar, Hazard and Costa are all playing well and so I don't think we are relying on any one player.

Neither are City relying on any one player. Aguero, Kompany, Silva and Toure have all been out for spells, their four best players, and yet, despite our incredible start, they are only 3 points behind. I am very worried.

They are the best team we have played this season, by far, and they have a pretty imposing team, and a very good manager, whom people mysteriously underrate. They also have more depth than us. I would say we would be more affected by injuries to key players, which thankfully we have avoided so far. Matic has only missed one game, which we lost. We lose him, Terry, Fabregas, Costa or Hazard for an extended spell and we might be in trouble.

I keep looking out for their results and they keep winning. They have that uncanny knack of winning football matches. They are the champions so they also have that self-belief and experience. It is going to be a close run thing. The worrying thing from our point of view, we haven't shaken them off. I also feel there is less pressure on them, one because they have already done it and so have less to prove, and two because everybody has been tipping us for so long.

As for fixtures, it's true we have played our hardest away games on paper and they still have theirs to come. That's comforting but I don't hold too much stock by that. Often the games you slip up are the unexpected ones. We dropped crucial points away to Newcastle and Sunderland, two vastly inferior sides. We do that too many more times this season and it might not matter if City lose a key game or two.

They have 28 points from their last 30 games. They are the form side. They are a formidable opponent. We are going to have to remain tip-top throughout the remainder of the season, and we have two hard games in the LC coming up, and I can't see Jose resting too many for those. Normally you can afford a little dip in form, not this time. You get the sense City have the bit between their teeth and fancy the fight. As you say they have had a little bit of luck and sometimes that instills that bit more self-belief. I'll feel a lot more comfortable if they just drop some bloody points.

I think any team would want to be in our position in the table right now. Man city have about 5 players for every position, so they should be able to cope without their star names for extended periods. This is the EPL, not some mickey mouse league, of course we aren't going to run away with it. Last season city never run away with it once they were a few points clear either. I think people forget how tough this league is; nothing is a formality. We should just enjoy the moment and believe, and not start having some sense of entitlement like the bluemoon or rawk lot.

CFC:

Southampton away

Spurs away

City:

Burnley home

Sunderland home

If we still come out of the next two fixtures on top then fair play to the Blues ... exciting times for sure

There's a difference between being realistic, and just being negative for no apparent reason.

As Jack said. Top of the league, more goals scored, less conceded, a better manager, a balanced team. We've played the majority of the big boys away and the usual culprits like Newcastle, Palace, Everton and Stoke who are prone to being a problem.

You seem to forget that we nearly won the league last season without a striker. I think it's about time you gave this team, the manager and the club some credit.

It just seems you like to be negative for no logical reason. It's an awful attitude to have. Instead of focusing on our 'negatives', look at our positives and you'll be able to see that we're in a fanf**kingtastic position for our first league title in 5 years.

Your opinions don't bother me, they intrigue me. How can someone think like that? I personally don't understand it.

EDIT - Also, did you watch the City highlights? West Brom could have had 3 goals on a different day. Quite easily too.

Fantastic post.

I have nothing against you Zeta at all, but you should listen to what he has just said, I think it's good to see people here aren't way in over there heads about Chelsea like some City fans were last season. We are better than that, however we also shouldn't be so negative either, we have a fantastic set up, and always remember to trust in Jose.

Utd are not good enough to win the league right now, there 10 points behind us ffs. Utd will be in better shape to challenge next season.

No matter how many players United sign, they are not stable to go on and win the league.

This isn't FIFA, you can't just go out and sign amazing players and it is that simple, the more players they sign the more cons as well as pros, for example the more players they do actually sign the more transition that is needed. When we had Hazard, Oscar and Mata it didn't just automatically make us title challengers did it, no it took us a while to actually build our side and form it into a stable balanced title challenging team.

I do agree with that post, but again that is also more negative than positive. For example you claimed that City have less pressure on us? Do you realize what it's like to lose your champions status? they haven't won back to back titles yet, yes we haven't won it in 4 years, could be 5 should we lose this opportunity.

The last thing they would want us for us to win the title now, they will be devastated if they get us into the flow of winning things so they will see it as priority.

I remember in 2011/2012 I was gutted when City won the title and many people thought I was mad, everyone was just happy United missed out, but all that did was give City strength, had they have missed out that year it really would have killed some confidence in that team. They already had to wait quite a distance to pick up there first title. But here they are now, Champions again and we have to knock them off that first place spot.

City have arguably just about or more pressure than we have. They should be devastated if we win the league this season.

I think that is exactly what Jack_super_class had in mind.

Man U have this season to develop they players and tactics, they know they won't win

PL. Their goal is to end up in top 4. It would a huge blow to the team if they wouldn't qualify.

They are not going to buy mindlessly top players, they will buy players that will fit the team and style LVG has in mind.

He's a good manager, he knows wha he's doing.

City will overtake us if and only if they beat us at the bridge. Even then the only way I see them winning that match us if Aguero and Kompany are fully fit and start.

Even if we beat Newcastle and Swansea before the City game they can still overtake us. All they need to do is get a better goal difference than us and they will go top.

Darius, anything can happen. I don't believe that city can overtake us only if we lose with them at stamford bridge.

Chelsea will be playing Swansea and New Castle so it's won't be easy games.

At this point, after what happened at White Heart Lane, I believe anything is possible.

We can't let that c**t pale n greeni beat us to the title. I cannot stand the smug prick. He walks into a team that was ready made, wins the title and thinks he is the dog's bollocks.

The big reason I didn't want Liverpool in the semi. This month is going to be a struggle, I don't like it already.

Yes we are better than Liverpool, but this is Liverpools highlight of the season, we have bigger fish to fry, I think that is going to be a major factor in the upcoming games against them. With that going on in the background we have plenty of league games to play, can see us dropping points to be perfectly honest. I'm negative about this month, not saying we are going to lose the league by any means, I still believe we will win this but prepare yourself, city have a good chance of overtaking us this month like it or not.

Although I hold my hands up to not knowing who City play this month, I know we play them at the end of the month, I would rather win that game than advance to the cup final, that game is a must win for me, it will show what we are really about. I also believe City have one hard game before they play us, Arsenal I think, I'm not sure. Either way I expect that sack of sh*te to bend over backwards.

I trust in Jose and he probably know what he doing, City won't go unbeaten untill the end. I can see them losing to us, Manchester United and probably few draws. All we have to do is keep supporting and beat them at our home.

I think it's fear mostly, City often finish the season strong and we're in abit of a rough patch

We often finish seasons strong aswell, we are in a rough patch but thats how title races work. At the start of the season we were better than them now its the other way around. There are going to drop points those fixtures they have away from home are too hard not too.

I won't deny that I fear city and have done ever since they tonked us 4-2 at handshake gate. That for me ranks worse than the 5-3s vs North London. I was so gutted we lost that game.

I believe we as fans have every right to fear them. They're the champions

They're still winning with key injuries to their best striker and defender.

They're attacking brand of football means they always look likely to score

It will take something special from us to take their crown IMO.

What was weird in that 2-4 match was that we were cruising at half time, then Hilario let them back in to the match by conceding two poor goals. I think we also had two sent off.

Why they hell would we fear City though? I really don't believe it'll take much from us to win this title. And we'll beat them when the come to the bridge on the 31st.

Citeh are a very good side, and have more squad strength in depth than we do but they are certainly more than beatable.

I prefer to remember the 1-0 win at their place. With all the media pundits predicting we would go there and park the bus, the exact opposite was true. We played them at their own game and the first ten minutes and last ten minutes aside, totally dominated. Hit the woodwork three times and the margin of victory should have been far greater.

City's next fixtures are:

Everton (A)

Arsenal (H)

Chelsea (A)

Hull (H)

Stoke (A)

Newcastle (H)

Some tough fixtures coming up.
