Juan Cuadrado to Chelsea .... Done!

Featured Replies

My opinion isn't just based upon his time at Chelsea. I've watched him quite a bit playing for Fiorentina and based upon that I'm saying its unlikely he's going to succeed at Chelsea. Simple as.

I think group dynamics need to be taken into account, different team members, different manager and so on.

Are you saying that our team and manager will allow him to fulfil his potential and more as a player?

Not really seen anything yet to make me excited about this signing at such a key stage in the season.

Looked to be struggling with the pace of the game in a lot of spells against Burnley.

Really need him to click sooner rather than later with our small squad size.

No one is writing him off, like many I just haven't seen what's the fuss was all about with this guy. I haven't seen a pace to burn and bags of tricks yet. Against a full back who was on yellow card, he didn't really threaten much, did he? Sure he deserves half a season before our judgment, but I thought I was watching a half fit Salah on Saturday.

The problem is that he is playing on the Right Side in front of Ivanovic, who's tendency to run way up the pitch forces Cuadrado to play back more.  You cannot have both right side players bombing forward because then it allows for an easy counter on that side of the field.  I really like Ivanovic, but as great as he has been for us offensively this season, he has been equally, if not more, liable on the defensive side of the ball.  I feel if Jose would play Azpilucueta on the right and Filipe Luis on the left, you'll see Cuadrado shine a little bit more.

Bit early to judge him...going by some standards on here, Ivanovic would never have seen the light of day at all given it took him eight months to make his debut...true, not an explosive start by juan, but joining mid season is never easy...actually thought there were positive glimpses in first half if him and hazard combining and developing an understanding...sadly it didn't carry on in second half...would like to have seen him dribble past a man but I'm sure that will come with confidence

Bit disappointed at the moment with him. Have not seen any sign of this lightning pace he is supposed to have. Early days though,  of course.

It's been less than a month.

As the Brit says it took Ivan time to adjust and others too like Drogba so let's not start panicking that he will be a flop.

However £30 million on Willian and £26 million on Cuardrado is a hell of an outlay especially when players like Sanchez have gone for the same kind of money and looks a far superior palyer than both.

Ivanovic struggled with injuries for his first 6 months at the club I believe, that's why there was quite a lengthy adjustment period when he came in.

We also had a fairly established centre back pairing at the time with little need for Ivanovic to slot in immediately.

The thing with Cuadrado is that he's come in at such a key stage in the season, I don't feel like we can afford to for him to have a 6 month adjustment period.

Hopefully that pressure means that he beds in a lot quicker, we need to keep giving him minutes where possible, the last 15/20 minutes of games would be preferable.

It's a tough one for any player to come into such a tight group who are at the top in the league and in Europe half way through the season.

I'd rather have waited until the summer to be honest. I'm convinced he will come good though.

Not every player comes in and makes an instant impact but some have went on to have very successful Chelsea careers.

On Saturday I felt he was bedding in nicely at first, but the flow of play, or lack of it due to poor reffing did not help any of our players let alone a newer one. Hazard is established, but his play was disrupted 9? times at PSG.

I'm sure i'll be criticised for it, since he's only had a few games, but so far i'm really not impressed. he seems identical to Willian, in that he will get to the edge of the box, then literally stop and stand there for 2 or 3 seconds, waiting for all the defenders to get back into position, and so far he seems more likely to lose the ball than Willian as well. Hopefully he will improve, but so far I'm worried about this signing.

I think it's a confidence thing with the cutting back and stopping.

In Italy and even in the national team he seemed to take on his man more often than not and usually left them for dead. He is just adjusting to the league IMO and will take a few more games to get used to our game.

If he's another Willian then questions will need to be asked because that will be nearly £60 million spent on attackers who don't score goals.

agree with you but to try and point out the good, the one thing i can take away is he runs in behind. There was a situation on saturday where Willian had done a lot of good work, laid the ball out to hazard, and in the end the ball goes across goal, willian had virtually stopped running.. YOU SHOULD BE BUSSTING A GUT TO GET ON THE END OF THAT SON! This has always been my criticism of him and where I think Andre would do well. So  on a couple of occations I saw Jaun attack the space just didn't get the right ball. And he also trys to attack the box without the ball, but so far instead of passing inside the fullback and in to his path we seem to be putting the ball on his heals... .

Any way hopefully he keeps attacking the space, goals will come. It's our biggest issue we just dont seem interested in taking a gamble on the near or back post (costa appart)

I've already said in this thread that I am surprised this deal happened in January rather than the summer especially as we let two attacking players go to bring in one. I think Mourinho saying he needs time to adjust is to try and take some pressure of him but really he's our only other attacking option in wide positions now short of playing people out of position which is never ideal.

I'm not critical of Cuadrado for not making an instant impact but really we need him to adapt quite soon so that Mourinho doesn't feels confident in his options.

Much like the Everton game he started fairly brightly but faded after that, especially after half time.... Right now I think he needs to be limited to sub appearances until he adjusts to the team, the tactics and the pace of the game.

I thought we was signing a player who took his man on quite a lot and looked to deliver the ball early, not seen too much of that yet and I'm not seeing what variation he offers us in attack that the current preferred 3 don't do.

I was actually against getting him to begin with but judging him on the game time he's had is silly. Some players take to a new team like a duck to water, some don't. There are plenty of top class players who have graced the PL who weren't great when they first arrived. Mourinho himself said we won't see the best of Cuadrado until next season so we may aswell back the lad.

^ Issue is you buy players in Jan to give you that "extra"; makes little sense buying him in Jan if he needs 6mths to adjust. We could have kept the funds from Schurrie's sale and recalled Moses who is looking decent at Stoke, or kept Salah who has adjusted well to the Italian league.

Totally Agree.

We are at the business end of the season where almost every game is a must win so you cannot let someone ease themselves in and find their way. Cuadrado really needed to hit the ground running and unfortunately he hasn't. I know it's still early days but in Schurrle we had someone who although hit & miss, he DID offer something different, whereas so far, Cuadrado appears to be a Willian clone but not as good (harsh after only a few games I know but again asks the question was it a good bit of business for a January window?).

Thing is willian looks more dangerous in behind the striker. We have been playing him on the right all season and he can't cut in and shoot because he isn't left footed, and he is not a winger, therefore behind the striker is a good position. I wouldn't even mind seeing willian next to fabregas in double pivot.

I think cuadrado will come good, but he hasn't even played 2 full games yet. You can't criticise him for the short time he's been here. The italian journalists said he took time to adjust to italy too. The problem is, the new players and youth don't get enough time because they are not an instant success, whereas liverpool and spurs have shown that when you give these players time, they flourish.

Again - No one (Except maybe one person) has critisised him, the actual question marks are over whether this was a good bit of business at this time. I.e. give we are well in contention for the title, may have it been wiser to keep Andre warts and all

Based on one game a few weeks ago? Not the other games where he's played there and looked equally hopeless as he does sometimes on the right?

True, but he looks more confident centrally, whereas on the right he seems bereft of ideas for the most part.

Actually quite often players are brought in in Jan for top clubs to get them to settle into life in this country etc and have them ready for the season after.

Kind of like when Man Utd signed Vidic and Evra, they were really bought for the season after.

but he's made 3 appearances, like I said it's silly to start judging him now. If he'd scored in his first game and still performed at the same level in general I don't think anyone would care.
