Robert Green

Featured Replies

According to Matt Hughes from Times we're looking to sign Green as a backup to Courtois.

Pros: experienced, homegrown, will probably be fine with not being a starter.

Cons: don't remember, haven't watched him in a while.

Think he would be a decent back-up keeper. Obviously not at the same level as Cech, but we all knew we could not retain a keeper as good as Cech just for back-up long-term.

Seems a waste to use up a foreign spot in the squad on a your reserve goalkeeper.

If Green is willing to come and play that role I don't think we could grumble too much... He's prone to the odd brain fart when playing but hopefully he wouldn't need to play much anyway.

Kevin Hitchcock is still a coach at QPR so he can get plenty of advice on being a back-up (and occasionally first-choice) keeper here.

Good choice for me.

Apparently on Hitchcock's final day at Chelsea his phone rang and it played "Forever Blowing Bubbles"... Turned out he was a Hammers fan all along.

Robert Green is having a decent season with QPR, i'd definitely take him next season if he was open to the move. The Premier League is blessed with so many good keepers right now, it would be harder to find a poor backup than a good one.

What happened to diego lopez of real madrid, or take valdes off utd's hands.

Would make no sense to have a non-homegrown reserve keeper once Cech leaves.

You're a funny guy!

If it wasn't for Green, I think the Yanks would lose that match  Green can rest assure that in any bar in the US, he will get drinks on the house

Shay Given counts as homegrown as well, we could probably sign him on a free transfer and his wages are apparently £25k/week, whereas Rob Green's are apparently £40k/week. Obviously Given is a few years older but at his peak was a far better goalkeeper than Green and did extremely well for Middlesbrough on loan last season. He would work well as a temporary backup if we are actually intending to bring someone like Blackman or Dela? through.

Trouble is Given will be 39 going into the new season meaning that we would likely be looking at another back up 'keeper in a years time and we're back where we started, I don't think we can keep looking short term, at least with Green you could get three or more years out of him being at the club.

Could always try someone like Scott Carson assuming he would be content with being a reserve goalie.

At least it would keep Liam happy!

Yeah that is true, I suppose we could get two years out of Given (I'm not entirely sure what condition he's in given how little he's played over the past couple of years). José seems to like having backup keepers with a lot of experience (Cudicini, Toldo, Diego Lopez, Schwarzer) so I don't know how realistic the prospect of our younger keepers actually getting a serious role in the squad is; I suppose it is telling that we have been linked with old codgers like Brad Friedel.

I've never particularly rated Scott Carson but he will likely be available in the summer as Wigan look doomed to relegation and (I would imagine) he would prefer being backup to a regular Champions League side than playing in League One. I would prefer us to sign Green or Given if I'm being perfectly honest.

If Green comes in for Cech we'll go from having the best 2nd choice in the top 4 to the worst. Arsenal have Szczesny/Ospina, Man City have Hart/Caballero and United have De Gea/Valdes. Should we be looking at someone better? Though obviously a reserve goalkeeper is an ideal spot to be taken up by someone homegrown.
