Is it too early to be depressed that we won't sign a starter?

Featured Replies

I don't want to continue to fan these flames of "depression" and such, nor do I want to be all "knee-jerk" about it, but I think we badly need a midfielder.

Someone simily in ilk to Lampard would have been ideal. We're lacking goals from midfield, and it's quite clear Costa's hamstring will be a problem (atleast for now), and Hazard has got the entire team looking to him to create something.

Agreed, but aside from Toure who City would never sell to us and Vidal whose just gone to Bayern, there isn't a goal scoring CM of Lampard's quality about.

There are no midfielders with goal scoring ability like Frank. He was a freak of nature, you'll never see a player do that from midfield in the Premier League again.

I agree there is no centre midfielder that could replace lamps goals, but I do think that rues or greizmann would have been great options to add more goals to this side.

I think Hazard can already be that player, just needs to add a little more Ronaldo like selfishness/self belief to his game.

I think he can too but I still think we could do with adding a another player that is likely to get on the end of things rather than create them. Willian is quality but he is never going to be a goalscorer. Maybe oscar can add the more goals to his game.

I agree with you. But who can be next to Matic? Pogba? It is impossible.

Why is Pogba impossible? The only reason it could be considered impossible is if he doesn't want to come to Chelsea. Financially we should be able to buy him, especially with the new deals kicking in.

Other targets were available, but of course it becomes very difficult if you let other teams sign them.

On paper either Griezman or Pedro would be helpful. However it's almost too late too get anyone for the longer term. Maybe benzema who has worked with mourinho before would be good for a couple of seasons.

I am growing far more concerned with our striking front three.

Costa, really does look injury (hamstring) prone. How many games will he miss this season with it?

Remi looked awful yesterday. With a back four as slow as Arsenal, how the hell did he keep getting flagged off-side?  It showed a lack of "nouse" to me

Falcao, I was never really convinced but did emotively buy into JM's belief that he can turn the guy's career around. JVG disagreed and on yesterday's performance it is hard to disagree with him.

Lets just hope that Costa plays enough and Hazard,Willian, Costa and Fabregas can once again weigh in with enough goals.

Really surprised we did not do more to bring somebody in !!  Just saying.................................................................................

My Biggest disappointment of the transfer window is that we did not show more ambition in signing Cabaye, I think he is the sort of player we require. Someone who isnt shy of actually having a pop from outside the box. Players such as Hazard and Willian stretch defenses providing space and time for people to shoot from 25-30 yards.

Other than Oscar on the odd occassion I don't see anyone within our team with the ability of Cabaye to take advantage of that, that was one area which I found we didnt explore enough last season.

If we do not add something significant I see another City 2012 situation occurring.

Standing still while everyone around you improves doesn't tend to end well.

im just hoping jose's change of public stance on the transfer situation isnt indicative of a problem behind the scenes. only a few weeks ago he needed new signings. now hes saying he doesnt.

im not being a panic merchant, nor am I "spoiled" as a fan, nor am I overreacting. I simply think that this year could be a difficult one for us

When did he say we needed new signings, the only thing I can think of is at the start of summer he said that we would likely be bringing in 3 players but that could include youth players being promoted and since then we have bought in 4 admittedly only 2 for the first team squad and maybe Kennedy if that goes through plus there is a probability we will get a left back.

So I'm not sure how this is a U-turn, obviously if I am missing something it could well be.

And I agree this year will be more difficult for us which may be a good thing for the team as they will have to play well rather than coast through and Jose will have to rotate for the cups giving the youngsters a shot. I also don't think the teams around us have strengthen that much so far Arsenal and City 1 signing a piece yes probably good signings but still does 1 player fill the gaps between the teams and Man U haven't sorted their Problems, Liverpool have strengthened considerably minus the loss of Sterling but is Brenda cut out for a title challenge probably not.

There is a month left of the transfer market so that could change

KDB or Pogba to City,      A striker and a defensive leader at Man U .      And a midfield general and a Striker for Arsenal

Would have me really worried and we would no longer have the strongest squad but we still have Jose.

Obviously a lot can happen over the season and Matic and Fabregas could get Injured for the season leaving us with Mikel, Ramires, Oscar and RLC which is considerably weaker but we would still be winning most games and have won games with that midfield in the past.

And from what we saw on Sunday Arsenal who I think are our biggest challengers who were at the end of their pre-season had to park the bus against a team that was in the middle of its pre-season in order to grind out a result and they really didn't look all that convincing, If our players had their full sharpness and fitness back we would have taken that game. So I am not sure what all the doom and gloom is about.

It was a few weeks ago when he said this:

“I want a striker, because we lost our legend (Didier Drogba),” he stated. “Also a defender and a midfield player to give a little bit more competitiveness to the squad, bring some new blood in, put some players a little bit under pressure.

“They know they have someone waiting, I need that to support my way of working."

Fast forward to now, and we have sold cech to arsenal and brought in falcao. For me, that doesnt chime with the comments above and his tune has now changed, calling out other teams for spending big money and "Buying the league".

Its a strange one. And its one that doesnt sit well with me... i genuinely believe we wont sign anyone else this summer except a replacement LB for luis. Obviously things could change, but as i've said in other threads, this all points to a ropey start to the season for us and i can see us playing catch up from the word go. I expect arsenal to come out all guns blazing like we did last season. I think this will be jose's last year with us.

Thats not me hating or being pessimistic, i genuinely believe something isnt right.

It was a few weeks ago when he said this:

So we have replaced Drogba with Falcao which is an improvement and could be a massive improvement depending on whether we can get Falcao firing. plus there is Traore for extra depth.

    he stated. “Also a defender

I think was meant to be John Stones not sure if its going to happen or not if it doesn't are we bringing in someone else probably not but the intent was there with John Stones.

    and a midfield player

Is this RLC as he said academy players will count as new blood or were we interested in someone the only 2 I can think that would improve our team Vidal and Pogba one we didn't go for and one we can't/ don't want to pay for.

Also there is Kenedy who Jose said is being signed for the first team does he count as a midfielder or Moses coming back from loan does that count as a signing I think Mourinho gave it the same regard as youth so yes.

I'm not saying our transfer window has been good by any means but its not been bad and we have provided more competition to the squad Falcao > Drogba (of last season)

Introduction of Moses and RLC to the first team squad so what we have done hasn't contradicted this statement it just hasn't quite lived up to your expectations of what this means. Moses will and can push Willian and Oscar and RLC's introduction will hopefully improve Mikel and Ramires and I can't see them being as bad as last season.

So I am not sure there has been any contradiction to this with what we have done and I don't think there has been a sudden switch in transfer policy I think we've known this for a while we have been paying for the majority of our purchases with sales, plus with all the promotion of youth being chatted about in the press last season and a new stadium on the way I don't think Jose can have expected a big budget so don't see this causing a rift.

The only thing that might have is the Petr Cech transfer but Jose seems quite humble about it in in the press.

I understand that people are a bit worried that we haven't made a massive signing, but it's not just us.

United still have serious problems they need to address even though they have bought in some good attacking players. Their defense is sh*t, if you want to win the Premier League, you must have a good defense.

City have bought in Sterling and Delph. Sterling improves their right hand side but getting goals isn't something they need to worry about, it's defending. I don't think Delph is very good at all, he's a poorer version of Ramires in my opinion. So their defense hasn't been improved either.

Arsenal are the only team that has improved because they have bought in a world class goalkeeper who will make their defense really strong. But their team is so injury prone that you can easily see things going wrong for them very quickly.

I personally think we need a CM who is strong but can also pass really well and i think we need to sign a RW / ACM, but i'm not overly desperate for it to happen. Willian was showing huge signs of improvement towards the end of last season and his performance against Arsenal was very encouraging. Then there is Oscar, he has had his first proper pre season with the club and has had a proper rest, this could be the season where we get to see Oscar show the consistency we have been waiting for.

I personally don't see why we can't win the league again this season, the other teams haven't had made major improvements to their squads.

Jose clearly said he wanted an attacker to replace Drogba, he also wanted a defender and midfield player to add competitiveness to the squad bringing in new blood and putting the existing squad under pressure, importantly to support his way of working with a team that is champions.?

Was he being spoilt and embarrassing himself in wanting this?

Well you can see we are clearly trying to sign players, 2 bids for Stones, Baba looks as if he's on the way too. Both young players that we can get another 10-12 years out of if they do come here.

Those comments were made on June 13 before we had lost Cech and Luis. Replacing those has become a priority, Stones appears to be the defender. The question is who is the midfielder, Jose is no fool he knows what he wants and it wouldn't surprise me to see someone come in under the radar... just the way we like to do our transfers.

"City have bought in Sterling and Delph. Sterling improves their right hand side but getting goals isn't something they need to worry about, it's defending. I don't think Delph is very good at all, he's a poorer version of Ramires in my opinion. So their defense hasn't been improved either"

Won't let me quote you Scott for some reason but I wanted to respond to this part of your post. City only conceded 38 goals last season, one more than their title winning season. The reason why they didn't have a good season was because they weren't scoring enough goals.

I don't think they have addressed that with just Sterling but if they do get KDB as well, which seems likely, then they will be a real threat even if their defence isn't as good as ours.

The thing I most like about traore is his willingness to shoot. There is nobody maybe barring oscar who is daring enough to take shots from outside the area any more which is what we lack.
