Is it too early to be depressed that we won't sign a starter?

Still thinking there is no one left to sign. Stirling clearly going to citeh, Turan not my first choice off to barca where pogba is also almost certainly headed. Griezmann who might have helped not coming according to Jose himself.

Terry can't go on for ever, over achieved last season really. We are very short on goal scoring midfielders.

In reality team needs quite a bit of strengthening although most here may not agree.

We are still not linked with a single potential starter.

The current league champions need quite a bit of strengthening when of last seasons top 4 Arsenal are the only ones to have actually signed anyone of any significance?

Depay might be promising though, wouldn't have mind us signing him to be honest.

I'm not to stressed yet, Mourinho have said he will sign a defender, midfielder and striker. So far we have only loaned a striker.

Not really. Traore is like a new signing in himself (assuming he doesn't go on loan) and we bought falcao, loftus cheek may be staying put and bamford still looks likely to get into the squad. We do need another top class, experienced central midfielder, but overall we have no reason to be concerned. We still have plenty of time to buy.

I'm slightly optimistic as I don't think anyone really anticipated Fabregas last season. It came out of no where.

I don't think there will be any players of fabregas quality available in this window, but I'm sure someone will be available. I think it's a positive sign that we're not just jumping at any opportunities that present themselves; we are thinking logically in regards to quality and financial costs.

But that's all he is at this point is promising.

He's a 21 year old moving from Holland where player purchases from that league have been pretty hit and miss in the Premier League.

He's one for the future rather than someone who is going to improve the current United team. They need defenders and a midfielder yet before they can feel confident of improving on last season.

We won the league at a canter last season, also won the capital one cup which people seem to be forgetting.

We're by far the best team in the league, we don't actually need anyone apart from a backup keeper now so should be grateful for us getting anyone near starting quality, I think some people are underestimating how important it is to keep a team together.

Also the team that was put out in the R16 in the champions league, were outclassed by PSG TWICE who were subsequently embarrassed by Barca, one of the games while they had 10 men, I get what you're saying but just because we're champions doesn't mean we can rest on our laurels, if we want to challenge on all fronts then we need to improve with top quality in line with the other top clubs in Europe.

I'm concerned that I can't see what big names are available this summer now.

But we still have Jose which is the main thing!

You mean the Champions League where we drew both the games and went out on away goals?

I'd rather judge our season based on the merits of a 38 games league season than a two legged European tie.

Yes there's room for improvement, of course there is but this mindset that we need to make superstar signings is completely lost on me.

I agree to an extent, but I'm a little concerned that we're being a bit too logical in a world that is not very logical at all. I'm fine with us not spending stupid amounts on an Arda Turan just because he happens to be available, but if we were really interested in Griezmann (hypothetically, because I have no idea if we were), I'd want us to spend the amount required to get him. My concern is that Mourinho is a little too comfortable with the squad at the moment. Our first team is good enough to retain the title, but a single injury and we'd be in massive trouble. Plus, we cannot run our starting 11 into the ground for 2 consecutive seasons. Now, if this meant the likes of a Musonda or a Traore would be given ample chances, and that RLC is going to be the extra man in midfield we desperately need, I'd be okay with it, but do you really see Mourinho relying on these guys when it matters?

Yes, there are very few top-class players available at non-ridiculous prices and I'm not panicking that we haven't spent for the sake of spending, but there is a risk with adopting the "lack of value in the market" mentality in a league as rich as ours. You just don't get deals as great as the Fabregas and Costa ones every year, and those shouldn't be our baseline for what a good deal is.

In short, if we really want someone and are certain he'd improve us, we should go for it. I want us to thrive the way we did in the first half of last season, not survive like we did in the second.

I don't see anyone available who could come in and improve our first 11.

Beasley says no Pogba, Greizmann and also no Turan obviously. Slim pickings I think now.

Maybe it will be a case of getting some reasonable back up and bringing through the younger players.

Seems strange since we just signed a record sponsorship deal with the new mega TV contracts.

You can take it at face value if you want mate, but the fact of the matter is we were outplayed in both games by a good but not brilliant European side.

I agree our season was a success, we won the league but if we have aspirations to challenge seriously on all fronts, we need to have world class players.

We already do have world class players.

Every team has a stutter in form during their season, we was unfortunate that our coincided with our Champions League matches against PSG. Yes we lost that tie but I'm more than confident that if we played them again then we could beat them with the current squad, same goes for playing against the likes Bayern Munich and Barcalona.

This side is still very much in its infancy, Mourinho has overhauled a huge part of the squad in an extremely short space of time. Give the squad time to settle instead of a revolving door of changes and it will reap the benefits.

We need a couple squad additions but really don't need a Pogba or whoever, Jose just needs to tweak a couple of things at this point.

Our team certainly does not need significant strengthening, though the squad does need depth. So we will more likely see a few squad players in, possibly one first choice player, and a few youth players promoted. We don't need revolution, we need evolution.

Every team needs strengthening. That's why even the best and the biggest clubs go out and spend loads of money every summer, that's what enables them to remain successful. We're good, but we're not at the level of Barca or Real. If we want to get there, we need to buy top quality, and nine times out of ten you need to spend more than you hoped to get the players you want.

All the teams that finished below us will spend and try to get stronger. If we don't, come next season we'll be chasing one of them instead of leading the pack like we did in 2014-15.

I can see both sides of the argument.

In one way I agree with abramovich (above) that we are a loooong way off Barca, Real and Bayern. We have weaknesses. We are still dependent upon a player who will be 35 next season at the back. Matic and Fabregas do not make a good two in the middle against stronger sides, and from an attacking sense, we are f**ked if Hazard gets injured. These are the weaknesses Gary Neville identified and he is right.

I would love us to buy a game-breaker in the final third, to make us really scary. That's the player I want most, if he's out there. Barca have Suarez, Neymar and Messi for god's sake!!!!!!!

However, we saw with Fergie, when you've got a great manager at the helm everything else is secondary. The most important thing for Mourinho will be togetherness and he will know precisely what he's doing. If he doesn't see fit to go out and buy a first-teamer we have to trust him.

To win the title, I think our current team is good enough. But for Europe, we need just more than what we have now. I'd be shocked if we didn't sign anyone considering that Jose said he wants to challenge for Europe next season, unless he plans to park the bus all the way to the final.

And the group formats in the CL have changed now, we could easily draw Real or Atletico in the group stages, which would probably see us get played off the park and manhandled.

Barcelona and Real are always going to be the most desirable destinations for the best players, so that leaves slim pickings for everyone else.

Don't see why people are worrying so much tbh. It's still very early days! If this was last season then I could understand due to our team needing reinforcements but we have a very strong team now which only really requires a few depth signings and one big signing

None of our rivals have made any huge moves yet and the signings they have made won't improve their team enough to catch us, we won the League by a big margin last season and this season Cesc, Costa and Courtois will all have had a season with us, plus the likes of Zouma, RLC, Hazard and Oscar will keep getting better

I do think this team needs one more big signing in AM though, apart from Hazard and Costa we lack another player that can get goals regularly

Pedro from Barcelona could become an option for us and probably won't cost a ridiculous amount. I would be delighted if we brought him in and he would instantly improve our attack and goal threat

The word depressing may be a bit excessive, but i have some mixed feelings. Arsenal have signed Cech, Man U have signed Depay. Only Man City hasn't signed anyone, just like us. But that's only looking at the domestic rivals, if you look across Europe, we clearly lack competitiveness. If we want to compete in Europe next season, we need more than just depth players. We need at least 1 starter (AM) if we want to improve. We are standing still at the moment and as they say: standing still = going backwards.

It's still early but our pre-season is starting in a week or something and i can imagine that ideally, we'd have signed who we wanted to sign by then.

No we couldn't..did you forget we won the league? That makes us top seed, used to go off points accumulated in the CL now goes off finishing place in the league..and we finished top = top seed in group stages....I just realised what a twat I am, they finished 2nd and 3rd so we could get them I see your point, but maybe it's top 2 are top seed in big leagues because who cares about avoiding top seed in sh*tty leagues plus some leagues only get one team so its likely top two in the big leagues are top seed
