Baba Rahman - The heir to Ash?

Can't understand why we sell Bertrand for £10m and sign this guy for £21m.

Because Southampton were able to offer Bertrand first team football... Something we couldn't.

At only 21 Baba doesn't come into the squad with the expectation of playing every game.

Each transfer is independent of the other, and about 2 years apart. They have nothing to do with each other

Bertrand is arguably the best left-back in the Prem, if Jose and his staff couldn't see that coming and integrated him into the squad then I really worry.

Clearly at some point in the not too distant future we were going to have to replace Ivan as a full-back, and the answer was right there staring us in the face. We should simply have loaned Bertrand out for another season and then integrated him this season. He's a quality player but once again we've let one of our own slip through our fingers only to be replaced with an expensive import. God help us if the same thing happens to a certain Mr R. Loftus-Cheek.

Bertrand didn't want another loan spell just to see if he may get a chance at the club, he wanted to be guaranteed first team football. Another year on loan wouldn't have guaranteed anything. The guy is in his mid 20's now, he hasn't got time for maybe's, he's got to make the most of his career now. I would love to have kept him before we loaned him out to Villa, as soon as he went to Villa, his Chelsea career was over.

Because, at the time we let Ryan go (as much as I didn't want it either) we had a pretty solid full back pairing of Ivan and Azpi.  Ryan wasn't about to displace either of them, so he went where he was guaranteed first team football.  I can't blame him, but I also can't blame the club with 2 years between then and now and teh advantage of hindsight

Hopefully Baba is the one that will make that spot his so Dave can go to his natural position, one which he has rarely played. The back four needs some new blood injected, Baba and Zouma would definitely be a very good place to start. He looks like he can become solid pillar back there. We kind of need to stop playing people out of position, it works at times, but eventually, it falls apart. Nonetheless, it was great to see the youngsters get a shot in midweek. Lets hope thats a trend that continues.

To be fair, how many people could have seen him becoming the best LB in the league 2 years ago? I dont think he is but hes a good player. Not good enough to start for us every week

Not really, A to Z is better and he's a natural RB, Luis was better, Baines is probably better, and City have got a bit of talent in that area, Bertrand was a good back up for Ash especially in Ash's last season or two but I never saw him as a stand out LB which hopefully Baba will be.

Ill give you Baines and Dave but Luis was/is not better than Bertrand. Kolarov maaaayybe

Apparently when we signed him, no one bothered to check Baba Rahman's height:

"Mourinho reveals why Baba Rahman won't play against Aston Villa"

huh?

Ashley Cole wasn't tall and he's the best left back I've ever seen. What a bizarre statement from José

If he isn't "ready" then I'd prefer to see Ola Aina.

Can't believe that Jose saying that his height is the problem. We don't have any problems in the air, we have Terry, Zouma, Cahill, Matic, RLC, Azpi. They are all tall and they're playing in defensive/central positions. Ivanovic can't deal with fast players, high quality of dribbling players, all this happen on the ground and not air.

Just play Zouma as our right back then. He won't do any worse than Ivanovic.

I don't agree with this at all by the way, I'm not really for using Zouma as our right back. So apparently he wants five for set pieces, we could have JT, Zouma, Matic, RLC and Costa. That's five right there.

Ivanovic hasn't been all that great in the air this season from memory, he missed a good header against Newcastle I think? And I seem to recall him almost undressing Van Dijk last match while trying to defend a corner, a foul that could easily have resulted in a penalty.

I don't have any stats at hand but I think we are conceding more goals from open play than set pieces, so maybe we should put more attention into defending open play right now.

I could get on board with that logic if we were doing well with set pieces but we aren't.

Drop Fabregas for RLC and partner him with Matic, problem solved.

Honestly the sh*t Jose has come out with to justify not playing the lad is ridiculous.

It's a made up excuse. Mourinho just wants to keep playing Ivanovic. You can guess the result of the Villa match then.

Do not understand why this lad is not given more of a chance. Not seen him play too much to be fair but when i have he has looked very decent & have heard some very good things about him.
