From Stones and Varane to this Papy Nobody. What a joke of a transfer window for Chelsea! Consoling oneself with Papy being cheap does not hide the fact that this is a desperate cheap buy by the Board done for the sake of buying a player, any player to placate the fans. I doubt Mourinho would bother to even put him on the bench.

It should be noted that Sunderland, Celtic and Bournemouth rejected the chance to sign Papy. Why are some posters here claiming that he is a good player and a bargain when all the facts state the contrary?

Even pedro was a nonsense deal. There was no reason to wait. We could and should have done it the moment his release was reduced.

Begovic, yeah fine, but I won't give credit to anyone for signing a keeper when a keeper leaves the squad. It's the most obvious piece of squad maintenance.

Meanwhile there is no additional central midfielder despite the decision to scale back loftus cheeks potential involvement. Fabregas and matic chased shadows against psg because we couldn't rotate them and they've started the season terribly with no viable replacements. Flirting late in the window with a pipe dream like Pogba simply isn't good enough, and being potentially out of the race in August isn't good enough. Jose needs to reflect on his work in this period with the attention to detail he's seemingly reserved solely for the medical department.

Well:

 

1) The guy is cheap, so expectations would not be sky high anyway.

 

2) Sunderland's transfers are usually dodgy anyway (Wes Brown? Rodwell anybody?), so they should not be used as a model for anything.

 

3) He's probably a fourth-choice centre back.

 

4) His decision-making is questionable at times, which is why relegation stragglers may not have wanted to take the plunge. However, he did play well for a potential relegation candidate in Nantes last year - one of their best players, in fact.

Do we need this average player? Its obvious Jose doesnt want players that can challenge Ivanovic and co, so we have to bring in anybody just to show that we are active in the transfer window

I think the board were so sure that they would get Stones that they didn't really bother with a Plan B. This move screams of 'stopgap' solution to me, we'll have another crack at Everton

Points well made mate. My only criticism is I'm not so sure José has had much creative control of the transfer signings this summer. My understanding being he submitted a list of names in late April. The rest has been left up to Emenalo and that Russian bird, Grezialao or whatever her name is.

Another player we can loan out for 3 years while struggling to find anyone to buy him.

French reporter on talksport just been asked about Papy, he said "They must have watched an old video because last season he was very very average, I'm not too sure why they've signed him"

Sadly with Jose, and it's one of his flaws, he'll be looking to blame everybody but himself.
