A lot of money lost for Martial though, I would be frustrated as well.

Didn't realise he has marketing based on the 9 shirt, so fair enough.

But if it's that important to him, he should have had something in a contract or image rights etc surely?

Not petty in the slightest though.

Apparently Martial just released his own clothing brand called AM9.

Which is suppose looks a bit silly if you're wearing the number 11.

Not properly football related but I suppose it could be construed as being disrespectful if Martial wasn't consulted about the squad number charge.

In an age of huge marketing deals etc. I suppose the number you wear is quite important to some

players.

That's more his fault for not making sure he had secured the number before launching the brand.

I thought it was commonplace to ask the players? United were so quick to suck him off they shafted their £60m player for someone who'll be there for 2 years tops.

Mata had to get permission from Benayoun to get the number 10 shirt and McEachran held onto number 20 for years despite being on continuous loan spells and having no hope of playing for us again.

I can't recall another time when that has happened though? Didn't Oscar vacate the number 11 shirt to number 8 when Didier returned so he could have his preferred number? Also wasn't there something with Hazard too? Not a big deal but I suppose it's a bit of a piss-take to just remove that number from a player regardless if you think it's petty. Shows disrespect to me, also what about those fans who had bought his shirt? I guess what Ibra wants...

utd will sign pogba for 100+ million and then in 2-3 years he'll go to real madrid or barca to spend the remainder of his career - if he impresses in england that is. no way pogba spends rest of his career at utd, and utd won't get back what they paid for him that is for sure. right now its all about money for pogba, but after a couple seasons in england he'll leave for a bigger challenge, it's what always happens with english clubs.

So apparently Anthony Martial is pissed off because United gave the number 9 shirt to Zlatlan without speaking to him about it first .

He's meant to have unfollowed United on Twitter as a result and Arsenal have inquired about his availability.

If that's the case we should enquire too, I'd love to have him play for us

It's a complete lack of respect to both the player and fans, as Gem points out, to just swap shirt numbers with no notice.  Didn't Aguero or someone offer to reimburse/offer replacements for fans after they changed their shirt number randomly?

The equivalent in my mind is if one of us showed up on Monday to find someone else moved into our office with all our stuff moved elsewhere, no notice or consultation.  I'd be pissed, and that's without marketing considerations.

Some people may see it as petty, but a shirt number means a lot to a footballer. I would probably be annoyed too if i was told that my shirt number was being given to some new player. It's moments like this that could lead to player disharmony at a club.

Good move Jose. I bet the United squad are thinking that he favours Zlatan more than others. To be fair, it sounds like Joseto favour others than more.

It seems the decent thing would have been for Zlatan to ask if Martial was okay with it. Maybe he did ask and was incorrectly told it wasn't a problem. But this being Zlatan, I'm not confident he would have been so considerate.

I see the money spinning Manchester Derby friendly has been cancelled.

Never saw that coming.....

Wish clubs would stop whoring themselves out for these totally pointless events in slum conditions just to earn a few bob.

It seems the smart thing (I say smart but really if you can walk and chew at the same time then you should be able to figure it out) for Martial would have been to communicate to MU how important the #9 shirt is for him.

Maybe this was done when he got the number in the first place?  I think, as a general rule, the people who are going to initiate the change are the ones who should initiate the communication/dialogue around it.

You're quite right. And it was Martial who wanted a change as he did not have the #9 shirt to begin with.

Can't imagine that he asked for it and wasn't told he's not getting it before it was gives to Zlatan.

Latest Hello! type gossip

Martial's ex wife (I know), has liked a picture on instagram that Zlatan put up, saying he chose number 9.
