He had a release clause. Had he not had one it would have took atleast £70m and that was in a pre Neymar to PSG market.
August 10, 20232 yr I don’t think we need Lavia if we get Caicedo. Rather the Lavia money went towards a nkunku replacement. Edited August 10, 20232 yr by ozboy
August 10, 20232 yr Not getting my hopes up. Any bid under 100M will be rejected, and by 100M, I think Bloom wants that guaranteed with no adds.

More than anything Nkunku was/will be/is a good goal scorer. 36 league goals in the last two Bundesliga seasons. Based on Werner and Havertz you could divide that 36 by 3 when you transfer to the premier league but I still expected him to be our leading scorer this season. That's why I feel the priority has to be on someone that plays for the team but will actually score a double digit number of league goals for us this season.
August 10, 20232 yr Just been having a flick through Brighton's published accounts, the latest available of which is from 21/22. Turnover (highest they've ever had) was £174.5m. I can't see how they could possibly pass up the opportunity to sell a player for £80-100m, regardless of whether it is their best player, or whether they are in Europe. It is simply too high a number, especially in the context of a percentage of their turnover. While Brighton are a very well run club, just like we have been historically they are heavily dependent on the largesse of their owner (he's pumped about £400m in to date, similarly to how Roman was in for £1.5 billion). Their stated goal is (1) to avoid relegation and (2) to establish themselves as a top ten side. They'd surely have to back themselves to achieve that even without Caicedo. I see this sale happening, but Bloom will get the number he wants for sure.

Even allowing for our new structure and Brighton’s increasing that kind of difference will always strongly incentivize players to move.

Bit more than that, but yes ours is still very significantly higher ! Their wage bill was £115.3m in those 21/22 accounts I was looking at. Ours was £340.2m in 21/22, albeit Clearlake have focussed massively on reducing that with sales of high earners and new contracts, so it might even be 40-50% of ours now.
August 10, 20232 yr For me Tony Bloom isn't the problem, he's being very shrewd because he knows he'll get the price he wants and that's just good business from his side. The main problem is that certain clubs like Napoli, Spurs and Brighton have notoriously difficult to work with chairmen and players/agents don't request release clauses in their contracts.
August 10, 20232 yr #Chelsea have made progress in talks to sign Moises Caicedo but Brighton are now demanding a basic fee of £90M, with a further £10M in add-ons. [via @MiguelDelaney]

If agents had their way, contracts would only be one way ie 100% commitment by the club and none from the player. Release clauses are another step in that direction. It doesn't matter whether you are Chelsea or Brighton, the excessive balance of power in favour of players and their agents is not good for football and even worse for the fans who have to pay ever increasing tickets priced to help pay for ever increasing player wages

[via @MiguelDelaney] So Brighton’s stance has not changed from the start. Whether Caceido is or isnt worth £100m is anyones guess, but if Chelsea want him they need to pay it. Alternatively just walk away. I get the feeling that both options suit Brighton so it remains Chelsea’s call.

August 10, 20232 yr Understand Liverpool have outbid Chelsea for Moises Caicedo which would also help explain Chelsea’s bid for Lavia. Suggestion however remains that Caicedo would prefer Chelsea move. More to follow #cfc #lfc @mattlaw

Time to get this deal done, there’s obviously some games going on between Liverpool and us regarding Lavia and Caicedo Caicedo should of been our priority this week not Tyler Adams IMO. August 10, 20232 yr Understand #LFC have made contract with Brighton over Caicedo but yet to make an offer.

Yep, a couple of Liverpool journalists are now saying the same thing, a bit of tit for tat between us and them. The point remains that we have messed about with this too long, we really should of wrapped up this deal so he plays against Liverpool this weekend.
August 10, 20232 yr We really need to put our big boy pants on now and get this done immediately. Stop messing around.
